1 Poursuivez l’amour et ambitionnez les dons spirituels, la prophétie avant tout.	1 Make love your aim; but be eager, too, for spiritual gifts, and especial y for prophesying.
2 Celui qui parle dans une langue, parle à Dieu mais non aux hommes. Personne ne le comprend quand il dit en esprit des choses mystérieuses.	2 Those who speak in a tongue speak to God, but not to other people, because nobody understandsthem; they are speaking in the Spirit and the meaning is hidden.
3 Par contre, quand on prophétise, on affermit les autres, on les encourage et on les instruit.	3 On the other hand, someone who prophesies speaks to other people, building them up and givingthem encouragement and reassurance.
4 Celui qui parle dans une langue s’affermit lui-même, tandis que le prophète affermit l’Église.	4 Those who speak in a tongue may build themselves up, but those who prophesy build up thecommunity.
5 J’aimerais que tous vous parliez en langues, mais je préférerais vous voir prophétiser. C’est bien mieux de prophétiser que de parler en langues, à moins que quelqu’un puisse les interpréter pour le profit de toute l’Église.	5 While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since thosewho prophesy are of greater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what theysay so that the church is built up by it.
6 Regardez, frères, si je viens chez vous pour vous parler en langues, à quoi cela vous servira-t-il? C’est tout différent si j’ai une révélation pour vous, ou une parole de connaissance, ou une prophétie, ou un enseignement.	6 Now suppose, brothers, I come to you and speak in tongues, what good shal I do you if my speakingprovides no revelation or knowledge or prophecy or instruction?
7 C’est pareil avec un instrument de musique, que vous preniez une flûte ou une cithare. S’il n’y a pas de notes avec leurs intervalles, qui reconnaîtra mon air de flûte ou de cithare?	7 It is the same with an inanimate musical instrument. If it does not make any distinction between notes,how can one recognise what is being played on flute or lyre?
8 Et si le son de la trompette ne ressemble à rien, qui va courir à son poste de combat?	8 If the trumpet sounds a cal which is unrecognisable, who is going to get ready for the attack?
9 C’est la même chose pour vous avec vos langues: qui va comprendre ce que vous avez dit, si vous ne dites rien clairement? Vous aurez parlé en l’air.	9 It is the same with you: if you do not use your tongue to produce speech that can be readilyunderstood, how can anyone know what you are saying? You will be talking to the air.
10 Il y a bien des langues dans le monde et chacune a ses mots.	10 However many the languages used in the world, al of them use sound;
11 Mais si je ne connais pas le sens des mots, je serai un étranger pour celui qui parle et lui sera un étranger pour moi.	11 but if I do not understand the meaning of the sound, I am a barbarian to the person who is speaking,and the speaker is a barbarian to me.
12 Tenez-en compte, et puisque vous vous intéressez aux dons spirituels, cherchez ceux qui construisent l’Église, de sorte que vous ne manquiez de rien.	12 So with you, as you are eager to have spiritual powers, aim to be rich in those which build up thecommunity.
13 Si quelqu’un parle dans une langue, qu’il demande à Dieu de lui donner un interprète.	13 That is why anybody who speaks in a tongue must pray that he may be given the interpretation.
14 Si je prie en langues, mon esprit est en prière mais mon intelligence reste vide.	14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit may be praying but my mind derives no fruit from it.
15 Est-ce bien? Je prierai en esprit, mais mon intelligence aussi devra prier. Je louerai Dieu en esprit, mais mon intelligence aussi le louera.	15 What then? I shal pray with the spirit, but I shall pray with the mind as wel : I shall sing praises withthe spirit and I shal sing praises with the mind as well.
16 Si tu rends grâce en esprit, comment fera le débutant? Va-t-il dire “amen” après ton action de grâces? Il ne sait pas ce que tu as dit.	16 Otherwise, if you say your blessing only with the spirit, how is the uninitiated person going to answer'Amen' to your thanksgiving, without understanding what you are saying?
17 Tu as fait une belle action de grâces, mais cela ne lui a rien apporté.	17 You may be making your thanksgiving wel , but the other person is not built up at al .
18 Je rends grâces à Dieu de ce que je parle en langues mieux que vous tous.	18 I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you;
19 Mais quand l’Église est réunie, j’aime mieux dire cinq paroles qui ont du sens et qui profitent à tous plutôt que 10 000 en langues.	19 al the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instructothers as wel , than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Frères, ne raisonnez pas comme des enfants. Pour faire le mal, oui, restez comme des enfants, mais raisonnez comme des adultes.	20 Brothers, do not remain children in your thinking; infants in wickedness-agreed, but in your thinkinggrown-ups.
21 Dans la Loi il est écrit: Je me servirai de gens d’autres langues et je parlerai à ce peuple par ces bouches étrangères. Mais même ainsi ils ne m’entendront pas - parole du Seigneur.	21 It says in the written Law: In strange tongues and in a foreign language I wil talk to this nation, andeven so they will refuse to listen, says the Lord.
22 Donc le parler en langues est un signe, non pour ceux qui croient, mais pour les non-croyants, alors que la prophétie est pour ceux qui croient, et non pour les incroyants.	22 So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on theother hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers.
23 Supposez pourtant que des débutants ou des incroyants arrivent quand l’Église entière est rassemblée, et que tous parlent en langues: que vont-ils dire? C’est du délire!	23 Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and al of them speaking in tongues, andsome uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving?
24 Mais supposez que vous êtes tous en train de prophétiser, et voilà qu’arrive un débutant ou un incroyant. Tous aussitôt l’interpellent et lui disent ses vérités,	24 But if you were al prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would findhimself put to the test by al and judged by al
25 et lui, voyant découverts les secrets de sa conscience, il tombe le visage contre terre, il adore Dieu et il reconnaît: Dieu est réellement au milieu de vous!	25 and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fal down on his face and worship God,declaring that God is indeed among you.
26 Quelle est la conclusion, frères? Toutes les fois que vous vous réunissez, chacun peut intervenir avec un psaume, un enseignement, une révélation, un parler en langues, une interprétation de ce qui est dit en langues… Mais que tout soit constructif.	26 Then what should it be like, brothers? When you come together each of you brings a psalm or someinstruction or a revelation, or speaks in a tongue or gives an interpretation. Let al these things be done in a waythat wil build up the community.
27 Qu’on parle en langues, soit, mais pas plus de deux ou trois, et avec un temps limité, et qu’il y ait un interprète.	27 If there are to be any people speaking in a tongue, then let there be only two, or at the most three,and those one at a time, and let one of these interpret.
28 Si personne n’est là pour interpréter, que ces gens se taisent dans l’assemblée et gardent leur parler en langues pour eux-mêmes et pour Dieu.	28 If there is no interpreter, then let each of them be quiet in the assembly, and speak only to himselfand God.
29 Pour les prophètes, deux ou trois peuvent parler, et les autres ensuite feront le discernement.	29 Let two prophets, or three, speak while the rest weigh their words;
30 Si l’un de ceux qui sont restés assis reçoit une révélation, le premier se taira.	30 and if a revelation comes to someone else who is sitting by, the speaker should stop speaking.
31 Vous pourriez tous prophétiser, mais l’un après l’autre, de sorte que tous apprennent et que tous soient motivés.	31 You can al prophesy, but one at a time, then al wil learn something and al receive encouragement.
32 Les esprits de la prophétie obéissent aux prophètes,	32 The prophetic spirit is to be under the prophets' control,
33 car l’œuvre de Dieu n’est pas le désordre mais la paix. Comme dans toutes les Églises des saints…	33 for God is a God not of disorder but of peace. As in al the churches of God's holy people,
34 Que les femmes se taisent dans les Églises. Leur rôle n’est pas de prendre la parole, mais d’obéir, comme il est dit dans la Loi.	34 women are to remain quiet in the assemblies, since they have no permission to speak: theirs is asubordinate part, as the Law itself says.
35 Si elles veulent en savoir davantage, elles demanderont à leur mari à la maison.	35 If there is anything they want to know, they should ask their husbands at home: it is shameful for awoman to speak in the assembly.
36 Est-ce de chez vous que la parole de Dieu est venue ou êtes-vous les seuls chez qui elle est arrivée?	36 Do you real y think that you are the source of the word of God? Or that you are the only people towhom it has come?
37 Ceux d’entre vous qui passent pour prophètes ou spirituels reconnaîtront que ce que je vous écris est un ordre du Seigneur.	37 Anyone who claims to be a prophet, or to have any spiritual powers must recognise that what I amwriting to you is a commandment from the Lord.
38 Et si quelqu’un veut l’ignorer, lui aussi sera ignoré.	38 If anyone does not recognise this, it is because that person is not recognised himself.
39 Donc frères, aspirez à la prophétie sans pour autant interdire qu’on parle en langues,	39 So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not suppress the gift of speaking in tongues.
40 mais que tout se passe de façon digne et ordonnée.	40 But make sure that everything is done in a proper and orderly fashion.
