3 La méchanceté attire le mépris, une conduite honteuse attire les reproches. | 3 The wicked man when he is come into the depth of sine, contemneth: but ignominy and reproach follow him. |
4 La parole humaine est une eau profonde, une fontaine jaillissante, une source de vie. | 4 Words from the mouth of a men are as deep water: and the fountain of wisdom as an overflowing stream. |
5 Il n’est pas bien de céder au méchant, et de condamner celui qui est dans son droit. | 5 It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to decline from the truth of judgment. |
6 Les réflexions du sot attirent la dispute; quand il parle, il appelle la bagarre. | 6 The lips of a fool intermeddle with strife: and his mouth provoketh quarrels. |
7 Le sot parle et se fait tort à lui-même: il se prépare un piège. | 7 The mouth of a fool is his destruction: and his lips are the ruin of his soul. |
8 Les paroles du médisant sont comme des friandises; elles glissent doucement jusqu’au fond des entrailles. | 8 The words of the double tongued are as if they were harmless: and they reach even to the inner parts of the bowels. Fear casteth down the slothful: and the souls of the effeminate shall be hungry. |
9 Celui qui se relâche dans son travail est frère de celui qui démolit. | 9 He that is loose and slack in his work, is the brother of him that wasteth his own works. |
10 Le nom de Yahvé est une forteresse; le juste y accourt et s’y trouve en sécurité. | 10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the just runneth to it, and shall be exalted. |
11 La fortune du riche, voilà sa ville forte; elle lui semble un rempart imprenable. | 11 The substance of the rich man is the city of his strength, and as a strong wall compassing him about. |
12 L’arrogance de l’homme a précédé sa ruine; l’humilité a précédé la gloire. | 12 Before destruction, the heart of a man is exalted: and before he be glorified, it is humbled. |
13 Qui répond avant d’avoir écouté passe pour stupide et se couvre de ridicule. | 13 He that answereth before he heareth sheweth himself to be a fool, and worthy of confusion. |
14 L’esprit de l’homme est ce qui le maintient dans sa maladie; mais comment relever l’esprit abattu? | 14 The spirit of a man upholdeth his infirmity: but a spirit that is easily angered, who can bear? |
15 Un esprit ouvert acquiert des connaissances; l’oreille du sage est à la recherche du savoir. | 15 A wise heart shall acquire knowledge: and the ear of the wise seeketh instruction. |
16 Un cadeau vous ouvre les portes; c’est la façon de s’introduire auprès des grands. | 16 A man's gift enlargeth his may, and maketh him room before princes. |
17 Dans une dispute, le premier a raison; mais l’autre se présente, et tout est à revoir. | 17 The just is first accuser of himself: his friend cometh, and shall search him. |
18 Le tirage à pile ou face pourrait résoudre bien des querelles, et même trancher entre des puissants. | 18 The lot suppresseth contentions, and determineth even between the mighty. |
19 Un frère aidé par son frère est comme une forteresse, et des amis, comme les verrous d’une tour. | 19 A brother that is helped by his brother, is like a strong city: and judgments are like the bars of cities. |
20 Tout ce que tu as dit, tu t’en rempliras l’estomac; tu mangeras jusqu’à plus faim ce qui est tombé de tes lèvres. | 20 Of the fruit of a man's mouth shall his belly be satisfied: and the offspring of his lips shall fill him. |
21 La langue a pouvoir sur la mort et sur la vie; selon l’usage qu’on en fait, on en goûtera les fruits. | 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: they that love it, shall eat the fruits thereof. |
22 Qui a trouvé une épouse a trouvé le bonheur; c’est Yahvé qui lui en fait la grâce. | 22 He that hath found a good wife, hath found a good thing, and shall receive a pleasure from the Lord. He that driveth away a good wife, driveth away a good thing: but he that keepeth an adulteress, is foolish and wicked. |
23 Le mendiant parle en suppliant, mais le riche lui répond avec dureté. | 23 The poor will speak with supplications, and the rich will speak roughly. |
24 Il y a des amis qui conduisent au malheur, mais tel autre est plus attaché qu’un frère. | 24 A man amiable in society, shall be more friendly than a brother. |
