1 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Tu vas monter maintenant, avec le peuple que j’ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, vers le pays pour lequel j’ai fait ce serment à Abraham, Isaac et Jacob: Je le donnerai à ta descendance.	1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: “Go forth, ascend from this place, you and your people, whom you led away from the land of Egypt, into the land that I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: To your offspring, I will give it.
2 J’enverrai devant toi un ange pour chasser le Cananéen, l’Amorite, le Hittite, le Périsite, le Hivvite et le Jébusite,	2 And I will send an Angel to precede you, so that I may cast out the Canaanite, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,
3 mais je ne monterai pas au milieu de vous vers ce pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel, car vous êtes un peuple à la nuque raide et je risquerais de vous exterminer en chemin.”	3 and so that you may enter into a land flowing with milk and honey. For I will not go up with you, since you are a stiff-necked people, lest perhaps I may destroy you on the way.”
4 Le peuple entendit cette parole sévère; ils prirent le deuil, et personne n’osa plus mettre ses habits de fête.	4 And upon hearing this very bad news, the people mourned; and no one put on his finery according to custom.
5 Yahvé dit encore à Moïse: “Dis ceci aux Israélites: Vous êtes un peuple à la nuque raide. Si je venais avec vous, seulement pour un moment, je vous exterminerais. Maintenant donc, enlevez vos habits de fête et je verrai comment vous traiter.”	5 And the Lord said to Moses: “Say to the sons of Israel: You are a stiff-necked people. I should at once go up into your midst and destroy you. Now immediately put aside your ornaments, so that I may know what to do to you.”
6 Les Israélites enlevèrent donc leurs vêtements de fête au départ du mont Horeb.	6 Therefore, the sons of Israel put aside their ornaments before Mount Horeb.
7 Moïse prit la Tente et la planta pour lui à l’extérieur, loin du camp, et il l’appela la Tente du Rendez-Vous. Celui qui voulait consulter Yahvé se dirigeait vers la Tente du Rendez-Vous, à l’extérieur du camp.	7 Also, Moses took the tabernacle and pitched it beyond the camp at a distance, and he called its name: ‘Tabernacle of the Covenant.’ And all the people, who had any kind of question, went out to the Tabernacle of the Covenant, beyond the camp.
8 Lorsque Moïse se dirigeait vers la Tente, tout le peuple se levait et restait debout, chacun à l’entrée de sa propre tente. Et ils suivaient Moïse du regard jusqu’à ce qu’il entre dans la Tente.	8 And when Moses went out to the tabernacle, all the people rose up, and each one stood at the door of his pavilion, and they beheld the back of Moses until he entered the tent.
9 Dès que Moïse entrait dans la Tente, la colonne de nuée descendait et s’arrêtait à l’entrée de la Tente. Alors Yahvé parlait avec Moïse.	9 And when he had gone into the Tabernacle of the Covenant, the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the door, and he spoke with Moses.
10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée s’arrêter à l’entrée de la Tente; tout le peuple aussitôt se prosternait, chacun à l’entrée de sa propre tente.	10 And all discerned that the pillar of cloud stood at the door of the Tabernacle. And they stood and worshipped at the doors of their tents.
11 Alors Yahvé parlait à Moïse face à face, comme un homme parle avec son ami; puis Moïse retournait vers le camp, mais son serviteur, le jeune Josué, fils de Noun, ne quittait pas la Tente.	11 But the Lord spoke to Moses face to face, just as a man is used to speaking to his friend. And when he returned to the camp, his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, did not withdraw from the Tabernacle.
12 Moïse dit à Yahvé: “Tu me dis de conduire ce peuple, mais tu ne m’as pas fait connaître comment tu me feras accompagner. Pourtant tu m’as dit: Je te connais par ton nom et tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux.	12 Then Moses said to the Lord: “You instruct me to lead this people away, and you do not reveal to me whom you will send with me, particularly since you have said: ‘I know you by name, and you have found favor before me.’
13 Si donc j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, fais-moi connaître tes chemins pour que je te connaisse et que je trouve grâce à tes yeux. N’oublie pas que cette nation est ton peuple!”	13 If, therefore, I have found favor in your sight, show your face to me, so that I may know you and may find grace before your eyes. Look favorably on your people, this nation.”
14 Yahvé répondit: “J’irai moi-même et je te donnerai le repos.”	14 And the Lord said, “My face will precede you, and I will give you rest.”
15 Moïse lui dit: “Si ta Face ne vient pas avec nous, ne nous fais pas partir d’ici;	15 And Moses said: “If you will not yourself precede us, then do not lead us away from this place.
16 mais si tu marches avec nous, je saurai que tu nous traites de façon spéciale, moi et mon peuple, et que tu nous as mis à part de tout autre peuple sur la surface de la terre.”	16 For how will we be able to know, I and your people, that we have found grace in your sight, unless you walk with us, so that we may be glorified out of all the people who live upon the earth?”
17 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: “Je ferai pour toi, même ce que tu viens de dire, car tu as trouvé grâce à mes yeux et je te connais par ton nom.”	17 Then the Lord said to Moses: “This word also, which you have spoken, I will do. For you have found grace before me, and I have known you by name.”
18 Moïse dit: “Fais-moi donc voir ta Gloire!”	18 And he said, “Show me your glory.”
19 Et Lui répondit: “Je vais faire passer devant toi toute ma bonté, et je prononcerai devant toi le Nom de Yahvé, car ma faveur va à qui je la donne, et j’ai pitié de qui j’ai pitié.”	19 He responded: “I will show you all that is good, and I will call out with the name of the Lord before you. And I will take pity on whomever I will, and I will be lenient to whomever it will please me.”
20 Il ajouta pourtant: “Tu ne pourras pas voir ma Face, car l’homme ne peut me voir sans mourir.”	20 And again he said: “You are not able to see my face. For man shall not see me and live.”
21 Yahvé dit: “Vois cette place près de moi; tu te tiendras ici sur le rocher et,	21 And again, he said: “Behold, there is a place with me, and you shall stand upon the rock.
22 lorsque ma Gloire passera, je te mettrai dans la fente du rocher et ma main te couvrira jusqu’à ce que je sois passé.	22 And when my glory will cross over, I will set you in a cleft of the rock, and I will protect you with my right hand, until I pass by.
23 Puis je retirerai ma main et tu me verras de dos, car ma Face, nul ne peut la voir.”	23 And I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back. But my face you are not able to see.”
