1 Le lendemain, Holoferne ordonna à toute son armée et à toutes les troupes auxiliaires qui étaient venues avec lui, de lever le camp pour Béthulie. Elles devaient occuper les pentes de la montagne et livrer bataille aux Israélites.	1 The fol owing day Holofernes issued orders to his whole army and to the whole host of auxiliaries whohad joined him, to break camp and march on Bethulia, to occupy the mountain passes and so open thecampaign against the Israelites.
2 Ce jour-là même, tous les soldats levèrent le camp; il y avait environ 170 000 fantassins et 12 000 cavaliers, sans compter ceux qui s’occupaient des bagages et la foule considérable qui les accompagnait.	2 The troops broke camp that same day. The actual fighting force numbered one hundred and twentythousand infantry and twelve thousand cavalry, not to mention the baggage train with the vast number of men onfoot concerned with that.
3 Ils s’engagèrent dans le vallon qui est au pied de Béthulie, en direction de la source: ils avançaient depuis Dotaïn jusqu’à Belbaïn, et depuis Béthulie jusqu’à Cyamon, qui se trouve en face d’Esdrelon.	3 They penetrated the val ey in the neighbourhood of Bethulia, near the spring, and deployed on a widefront from Dothan to Balbaim and, in depth, from Bethulia to Cyamon, which faces Esdraelon.
4 Lorsque les Israélites aperçurent cette foule immense, saisis de peur ils se dirent entre eux: “Maintenant ils vont raser tout le pays! Ni les sommets les plus élevés, ni les gorges les plus profondes, ni les collines ne résisteront devant eux!”	4 When the Israelites saw this horde, they were al appal ed and said to each other, 'Now they wil lick thewhole country clean. Not even the loftiest peaks, the gorges or the hil s wil be able to stand the weight of them.'
5 Chacun prit alors ses armes, on alluma des feux sur les tours et on monta la garde toute la nuit.	5 Each man snatched up his arms; they lit beacons on their towers and spent the whole night on watch.
6 Le deuxième jour, Holoferne étala toute sa cavalerie sous les yeux des Israélites de Béthulie.	6 On the second day Holofernes deployed his entire cavalry in sight of the Israelites in Bethulia.
7 Il inspecta soigneusement les sentiers qui montaient vers la ville ainsi que les sources d’eau; il les occupa, il y mit des postes de soldats, et lui-même retourna à son armée.	7 He reconnoitred the slopes leading up to the town, located the water-points, seized them and postedpickets over them and returned to the main body.
8 Les princes d’Ésaü, les chefs des Moabites et les généraux de la région de la côte, s’approchèrent de lui et lui dirent:	8 The chieftains of the sons of Esau, al the leaders of the Moabites and the generals of the coastal districtthen came to him and said,
9 “Que notre maître veuille bien nous écouter et pas un de ses hommes ne sera blessé.	9 'If our master wil be pleased to listen to us, his forces wil not sustain a single wound.
10 Le peuple d’Israël compte plus sur la hauteur des montagnes qu’il habite que sur ses lances, car il n’est pas facile d’escalader ces montagnes.	10 These Israelites do not rely so much on their spears as on the height of the mountains where they live.And admittedly it is not at all easy to scale these heights of theirs.
11 Alors, maître, si tu ne veux perdre aucun de tes hommes, n’engage pas contre eux une bataille en règle.	11 'This being the case, master, avoid engaging them in a pitched battle and then you wil not lose a singleman.
12 Reste dans ton camp et garde avec toi tous les hommes de ton armée, il suffit d’envoyer quelques uns de tes serviteurs pour interdire l’accès de la source qui est au pied de la montagne.	12 Stay in camp, keep al your troops there too, while your servants seize the spring which rises at the footof the mountain,
13 Puisque c’est là que les habitants de Béthulie viennent chercher l’eau, la soif les obligera à te livrer leur ville. Pendant ce temps, nous et nos gens, nous monterons sur les crêtes des montagnes les plus proches et nous y établirons des camps de sorte que personne ne puisse sortir de la ville.	13 since that is what provides the population of Bethulia with their water supply. Thirst wil then force themto surrender their town. Meanwhile, we and our men wil climb the nearest mountain tops and form advanceposts there to prevent anyone from leaving the town.
14 Ils seront dévorés par la faim, eux, leurs femmes et leurs enfants, et sans même que l’épée ne les frappe, nous les trouverons étendus dans les rues, devant leurs maisons.	14 Hunger wil waste them, with their wives and children, and before the sword can reach them they wilalready be lying in the streets outside their houses.
15 C’est le bon moyen de leur faire payer cher leur révolte et leur refus de venir pacifiquement à ta rencontre.”	15 And you will make them pay dearly for their defiance and their refusal to meet you peaceably.'
16 Ce discours plut à Holoferne et à tous ses officiers, et il décida de suivre leur avis.	16 Their words pleased Holofernes as wel as al his officers, and he decided to do as they suggested.
17 On envoya donc une troupe de Moabites, et avec eux 5 000 Assyriens. Ils se glissèrent dans le vallon, s’emparèrent des sources et des points d’eau des Israélites.	17 Accordingly, a troop of Moabites moved forward with a further five thousand Assyrians. Theypenetrated the val ey and seized the Israelites' waterpoints and springs.
18 Pendant ce temps, les Édomites et les Ammonites montèrent, prirent position dans la montagne en face de Dotaïn, et envoyèrent une partie de leurs hommes vers le sud et vers l’est, en face d’Égrebel, qui est proche de Chous, sur le torrent de Mochmour. Le reste de l’armée assyrienne s’installa dans la plaine: elle couvrait toute la région. La foule était considérable et les tentes et les bagages formaient un campement énorme.	18 Meanwhile the Edomites and Ammonites went and took up positions in the highlands opposite Dothan,sending some of their men to the south-east opposite Egrebel near Chous on the Wadi Mochmur. The rest of theAssyrian army took up positions in the plain, covering every inch of the ground; their tents and equipment madean immense encampment, so vast were their numbers.
19 Les Israélites crièrent vers leur Seigneur, leur Dieu. Ils avaient perdu courage en voyant que les ennemis les entouraient et leur coupaient toute retraite.	19 The Israelites cal ed on the Lord their God, dispirited because the enemy had surrounded them and cutal line of retreat.
20 Cela faisait 34 jours que l’armée Assyrienne avec ses fantassins, ses chars et ses cavaliers, les tenaient encerclés; les habitants de Béthulie voyaient toutes les cruches d’eau et toutes les citernes se vider peu à peu.	20 For thirty-four days the Assyrian army, infantry, chariots, cavalrymen, had them surrounded. Everywater-jar the inhabitants of Bethulia had was empty,
21 L’eau était rationnée et l’on ne buvait plus à sa soif.	21 their storage-wel s were drying up; on no day could a man drink his fil , since their water was rationed.
22 Les enfants faisaient peine à voir, les femmes et les jeunes gens tombaient de soif, ils tombaient sans force dans les rues et jusqu’aux portes de la ville.	22 Their little children pined away, the women and young men grew weak with thirst; they col apsed in the streets and gateways of the town; they had no strength left.
23 C’est alors que tout le peuple, jeunes gens, femmes et enfants, fit une manifestation bruyante. Ils vinrent protester contre Osias et les anciens de la ville:	23 Young men, women, children, the whole people thronged clamouring round Uzziah and the chief menof the town, shouting in the presence of the assembled elders,
24 “Que Dieu juge entre vous et nous! Vous nous avez fait un tort immense! Il fallait traiter avec les Assyriens!	24 'May God be judge between you and us! For you have done us great harm, by not suing for peace withthe Assyrians.
25 Maintenant il n’y a plus personne pour nous secourir, Dieu nous a abandonnés entre leurs mains, nous sommes terrassés par la soif sous leurs yeux et nous allons tous mourir.	25 And now there is no one to help us. God has delivered us into their hands to be prostrated before themin thirst and utter helplessness.
26 Il faut les appeler tout de suite et accepter que la ville soit mise au pillage par les gens d’Holoferne et toute son armée.	26 Cal them in at once; hand the whole town over to be sacked by Holofernes' men and al his army.
27 “De toutes façons, il vaut beaucoup mieux pour nous de tomber entre leurs mains. Certainement nous serons leurs esclaves, mais au moins, nous n’assisterons pas à la mort de nos nourrissons, ni à celle de nos femmes et de nos enfants.	27 After al , we should be much better off as their booty than we are now; no doubt we shall be enslaved,but at least we shal be alive and not see our little ones dying before our eyes or our wives and childrenperishing.
28 Nous vous supplions au nom du ciel et de la terre, au nom du Dieu et Seigneur de nos pères, qui nous punit à cause de nos fautes et des fautes de nos pères: faites aujourd’hui même ce que nous vous demandons.”	28 By heaven and earth and by our God, the Lord of our fathers, who is punishing us for our sins and thesins of our ancestors, we implore you to take this course now, today.'
29 Toute la foule se lamentait et criait à haute voix vers le Seigneur Dieu.	29 Bitter lamentations rose from the whole assembly, and they all cried loudly to the Lord God.
30 Osias leur dit: “Reprenez courage, mes frères, tenons encore cinq jours! Sûrement le Seigneur aura pitié de nous, il ne nous abandonnera pas jusqu’au bout.	30 Then Uzziah spoke to them, 'Take heart, brothers! Let us hold out five days more. By then the Lord ourGod will take pity on us, for he wil not desert us altogether.
31 Mais si au bout de cinq jours aucun secours ne nous est arrivé, je suivrai votre avis.”	31 At the end of this time, if no help is forthcoming, I shall do as you have said.'
32 Il renvoya la foule qui se dispersa dans la ville. Les hommes retournèrent aux remparts et aux tours, pendant que femmes et enfants rentraient à la maison, mais la ville toute entière était plongée dans une profonde angoisse.	32 With that he dismissed the people to their various quarters. The men went to man the wal s and towersof the town, sending the women and children home. The town was ful of despondency.
