1 Yahvé visita Sara comme il l’avait dit et il accomplit envers elle sa promesse.	1 Then the Lord visited Sarah, just as he had promised; and he fulfilled what he had spoken.
2 Sara conçut, elle donna un fils à Abraham en sa vieillesse, au temps marqué par Dieu.	2 And she conceived and gave birth to a son in her old age, at the time that God had foretold to her.
3 Abraham donna le nom d’Isaac à ce fils qui lui était né de Sara.	3 And Abraham called the name of his son, whom Sarah bore for him, Isaac.
4 Lorsque son fils Isaac fut âgé de huit jours, Abraham le circoncit selon l’ordre de Dieu.	4 And he circumcised him on the eighth day, just as God had instructed him,
5 À la naissance de son fils Isaac, Abraham avait déjà 100 ans.	5 when he was one hundred years old. Indeed, at this stage of his father’s life, Isaac was born.
6 Sara dit alors: “Dieu m’a bien donné l’occasion de rire, et ceux qui l’apprendront riront aussi à mon sujet.”	6 And Sarah said: “God has brought laughter to me. Whoever will hear of it will laugh with me.”
7 Elle ajouta: “Qui aurait dit à Abraham: Sara allaitera des fils? Et pourtant je lui ai donné un fils dans sa vieillesse.”	7 And again, she said: “Hearing this, who would believe Abraham, that Sarah breast-fed a son, to whom she gave birth, despite being elderly?”
8 L’enfant grandit et fut sevré. Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où Isaac fut sevré.	8 And the boy grew and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day of his weaning.
9 À cette occasion Sara vit comment le fils de l’Égyptienne Agar, le fils qu’elle avait donné à Abraham, s’amusait de son fils Isaac.	9 And when Sarah had seen the son of Hagar the Egyptian playing with her son Isaac, she said to Abraham:
10 Elle dit à Abraham: “Chasse-moi cette servante et son fils; le fils de cette servante ne doit pas hériter avec le mien, avec Isaac.”	10 “Cast out this woman servant and her son. For the son of a woman servant will not be heir with my son Isaac.”
11 Cela déplut beaucoup à Abraham, parce que c’était son garçon.	11 Abraham took this grievously, for the sake of his son.
12 Mais Dieu dit à Abraham: “Ne te tourmente pas au sujet de ton garçon et de ta servante. Fais donc tout ce que Sara te demande, car c’est le nom d’Isaac que portera ta descendance.	12 And God said to him: “Let it not seem harsh to you concerning the boy and your woman servant. In all that Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice. For your offspring will be invoked in Isaac.
13 Mais je ferai que le fils de ta servante devienne lui aussi une nation puisqu’il est de ta descendance.”	13 Yet I will also make the son of the woman servant into a great nation, for he is your offspring.”
14 Abraham se leva de bon matin, il prit du pain et une outre d’eau et les donna à Agar. Il mit ensuite l’enfant sur son épaule et la renvoya. Elle partit alors à l’aventure dans le désert de Bersabée.	14 And so Abraham arose in the morning, and taking bread and a skin of water, he placed it upon her shoulder, and he handed over the boy, and he released her. And when she had departed, she wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
15 Lorsqu’il n’y eut plus d’eau dans l’outre, elle abandonna l’enfant sous un buisson	15 And when the water in the skin had been consumed, she set aside the boy, under one of the trees that were there.
16 et s’assit à la distance d’une portée d’arc. Elle se disait: “Je ne veux pas voir mourir mon enfant!” Comme elle allait s’asseoir en face, l’enfant commença à pleurer et à crier.	16 And she moved away and sat in a distant area, as far as a bow can reach. For she said, “I shall not see the boy die.” And so, sitting opposite her, he lifted up his voice and wept.
17 Dieu entendit la voix de l’enfant et l’Ange de Dieu, du haut du ciel, appela Agar. Il lui dit: “Qu’as-tu, Agar? N’aie pas peur, Dieu a entendu la voix de l’enfant, de l’endroit où il se trouve.	17 But God heard the voice of the boy. And an Angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, saying: “What are you doing, Hagar? Do not be afraid. For God has heeded the voice of the boy, from the place where he is.
18 Lève-toi, prends ton enfant et tiens-le ferme de la main. Je ferai de lui une grande nation.”	18 Rise up. Take the boy and hold him by the hand. For I will make of him a great nation.”
19 Alors Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux et elle aperçut un puits. Elle alla remplir d’eau son outre et fit boire l’enfant.	19 And God opened her eyes. And seeing a well of water, she went and filled the skin, and she gave the boy to drink.
20 Dieu veilla sur la croissance de cet enfant; il séjourna au désert et devint tireur à l’arc.	20 And God was with him. And he grew, and he stayed in the wilderness, and he became a young man, an archer.
21 Il séjourna au désert de Paran et sa mère prit pour lui une femme au pays d’Égypte.	21 And he lived in the desert of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
22 En ces jours-là, Abimélek et Pikol, le chef de son armée, vinrent trouver Abraham et lui dirent: “Dieu est avec toi dans tout ce que tu fais.	22 At the same time, Abimelech and Phicol, the leader of his army, said to Abraham: “God is with you in everything that you do.
23 Jure-moi donc maintenant sur Dieu, de ne tromper ni moi, ni ma famille, ni ma descendance, et d’avoir pour moi et pour ce pays où tu séjournes la même attitude bienveillante que j’ai eue pour toi.”	23 Therefore, swear by God that you will do no harm to me, and to my posterity, and to my stock. But according to the mercy that I have done to you, you will do to me and to the land, to which you have turned as a newcomer.”
24 Abraham répondit: “Je le jure.”	24 And Abraham said, “I will swear.”
25 Cependant Abraham fit des reproches à Abimélek au sujet d’un puits que les serviteurs d’Abimélek avaient pris.	25 And he reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which his servants had taken away by force.
26 Abimélek répondit: “Je ne sais pas qui a fait cela; tu ne m’as rien dit jusqu’à ce jour, et moi de mon côté je n’en savais rien.”	26 And Abimelech responded, “I do not know who did this thing, but you also did not reveal it to me, nor have I heard of it, before today.”
27 Abraham prit du petit bétail et du gros bétail, il les donna à Abimélek et tous deux conclurent une alliance.	27 And so Abraham took sheep and oxen, and he gave them to Abimelech. And both of them struck a pact.
28 Sur le petit bétail, Abraham mit de côté sept brebis.	28 And Abraham set aside seven female lambs from the flock.
29 Abimélek lui demanda donc: “Pourquoi as-tu mis ces sept brebis de côté?”	29 Abimelech said to him, “What purpose have these seven female lambs, which you have caused to stand separately?”
30 Abraham répondit: “C’est pour que tu acceptes de ma main ces sept brebis et qu’elles soient un témoignage que c’est bien moi qui ai creusé ce puits.”	30 But he said, “You will receive seven female lambs from my hand, so that they may be a testimony for me, that I dug this well.”
31 C’est pourquoi on a appelé cet endroit Bersabée (c’est-à-dire: Puits des Sept ou encore: Puits du Serment), car c’est là qu’ils avaient tous les deux prêté serment.	31 For this reason, that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them did swear.
32 Ils conclurent donc une alliance à Bersabée, puis Abimélek et Pikol, le chef de son armée, se levèrent et retournèrent au pays des Philistins.	32 And they initiated a pact on behalf of the well of oath.
33 Abraham planta un arbre à Bersabée et il y invoqua le nom de Yahvé, le Dieu éternel.	33 Then Abimelech and Phicol, the leader of his army, rose up, and they returned to the land of the Palestinians. In truth, Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and there he called upon the name of the Lord God Eternal.
34 Abraham séjourna longtemps encore au pays des Philistins.	34 And he was a settler in the land of the Palestinians for many days.
