| 1 Non ti allegrare nelli figliuoli rei, s' egli multiplicheranno; non ti dilettare sopra loro, se il timore di Dio non è con loro. | 1 Do not desire a multitude of useless children, nor rejoice in ungodly sons. |
| 2 Non credere nella vita loro, e non guardare nelle loro fatiche. | 2 If they multiply , do not rejoice in them, unless the fear of the Lord is in them. |
| 3 Migliore è uno che tema Iddio, che mille rei figliuoli. | 3 Do not trust in their survival, and do not rely on their multitude; for one is better than a thousand, and to die childless is better than to have ungodly children. |
| 4 Più utile è morire sanza figliuoli, che lasciarli rei e malvagi. | 4 For through one man of understanding a city will be filled with people, but through a tribe of lawless men it will be made desolate. |
| 5 La patria fia abitata da uno savio; e fia abbandonata da tre cattivi. | 5 Many such things my eye has seen, and my ear has heard things more striking than these. |
| 6 Molte altre cose vidde l'occhio mio, e più fatti di questi udie l'orecchio mio. | 6 In an assembly of sinners a fire will be kindled, and in a disobedient nation wrath was kindled. |
| 7 Il fuoco arderae nella sinagoga delli peccanti, e l'ira arderae nella gente incredibile. | 7 He was not propitiated for the ancient giants who revolted in their might. |
| 8 Li antichi giganti non adorarono per li peccati loro, i quali furono distrutti confidandosi nella loro forza. | 8 He did not spare the neighbors of Lot, whom he loathed on account of their insolence. |
| 9 E Dio non perdonò loro per che fussono in altrui terra; ma percosseli e maledisseli per la superbia del loro parlare. | 9 He showed no pity for a nation devoted to destruction, for those destroyed in their sins; |
| 10 Non ebbe misericordia di loro, uccidendo tutta quella gente che si esaltava nelli loro peccati. | 10 nor for the six hundred thousand men on foot, who rebelliously assembled in their stubbornness. |
| 11 E sì come di secento milia pedoni, ch' essi radunarono nella durizia del cuore suo; e se uno solo ne fosse issuto superbo, maraviglia sarebbe stato s'elli fosse scampato (sanza essere punito). | 11 Even if there is only one stiff-necked person, it will be a wonder if he remains unpunished. For mercy and wrath are with the Lord; he is mighty to forgive, and he pours out wrath. |
| 12 Misericordia ed ira è con lui; potente è la biastemma e spandente l'ira. | 12 As great as his mercy, so great is also his reproof; he judges a man according to his deeds. |
| 13 Secondo la misericordia sua, così fia lo castigamento; l' uomo è giudicato secondo le opere sue. | 13 The sinner will not escape with his plunder, and the patience of the godly will not be frustrated. |
| 14 Lo peccatore non scamperà nella rapina, eziandio se la sofferenza indugerae coloro che fanno misericordia. | 14 He will make room for every act of mercy; every one will receive in accordance with his deeds. |
| 15 Ogni misericordia farà luogo [a ciascuno] secondo li meriti delle opere sue, e secondo lo intendimento della peregrinazione sua. | 15 . |
| 16 Non dire: io mi nasconderoe da Dio, e chi Idi cielo si ricorderae di me? | 16 . |
| 17 Io non sarò conosciuto nel grande popolo; o che è l'anima mia in tante innumerabili creature? | 17 Do not say, "I shall be hidden from the Lord, and who from on high will remember me? Among so many people I shall not be known, for what is my soul in the boundless creation? |
| 18 Ecco il cielo [e i cieli] delli cieli, il mare e tutta la terra, e quelle cose che sono in essa si commoveranno nel conspetto suo. | 18 Behold, heaven and the highest heaven, the abyss and the earth, will tremble at his visitation. |
| 19 Li monti e insiememente li colli e le fondamenta della terra, quando Iddio li guaterae, per la paura si dibatteranno. | 19 The mountains also and the foundations of the earth shake with trembling when he looks upon them. |
| 20 E in tutte queste cose è cuore sanza sentimento; e ogni cuore è inteso da colui. | 20 And no mind will reflect on this. Who will ponder his ways? |
| 21 Or chi intende le vie di Dio? Chi intende la tempesta, la quale non vede l'occhio dell' uomo? | 21 Like a tempest which no man can see, so most of his works are concealed. |
| 22 Molte sue opere sono ascose a noi; ma chi annunzierà le opere della sua giustizia? Or chi lo sosterrà? Da lungi è il testamento d' alquanti; e la domanda delli uomini è in finire. | 22 Who will announce his acts of justice? Or who will await them? For the covenant is far off." |
| 23 Colui che diminuisce nel suo cuore pensa cose vane; e l'uomo sciocco ed errante pensa le cose stolte. | 23 This is what one devoid of understanding thinks; a senseless and misguided man thinks foolishly. |
| 24 Odimi, figliuolo, e appara la disciplina del senno; e nel cuore tuo attendi le mie parole. | 24 Listen to me, my son, and acquire knowledge, and pay close attention to my words. |
| 25 E parlerotti con ammaestramento e dirittura, e cercaroe di narrarti sapienza; e alle parole mie attendi col cuore tuo, e dicoti in dirittura li spiriti della virtude, che Iddio pose nelle opere sue dal cominciamento, e nella veritade dico la scienza sua. | 25 I will impart instruction by weight, and declare knowledge accurately. |
| 26 E nel giudicio di Dio furono le opere sue dal principio; dalla formazione degli uomini distinse la loro parte, e li cominciamenti disse nelle genti sue. | 26 The works of the Lord have existed from the beginning by his creation, and when he made them, he determined their divisions. |
| 27 Adornò in eterno le opere di coloro; nè ebbono fame, nè lavorarono, e non cessarono delle opere sue. | 27 He arranged his works in an eternal order, and their dominion for all generations; they neither hunger nor grow weary, and they do not cease from their labors. |
| 28 Ciascuno non angoscerae il prossimo suo infino nel secolo. | 28 They do not crowd one another aside, and they will never disobey his word. |
| 29 Non essere incredibile alla parola sua. | 29 After this the Lord looked upon the earth, and filled it with his good things; |
| 30 Dopo queste cose Iddio guardoe in terra, ed empiella de' suoi beni. | 30 with all kinds of living beings he covered its surface, and to it they return. |
| 31 Ogni anima vitale denunzioe inanzi la faccia di colui, e ancora il ritornamento medesimo di coloro. | |
