BIBBIA VOLGARE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dissono li malvagi, pensando appo sè non dirittamente picciolo e con fastidio è il tempo della vita nostra, e non è refrigerio nella fine dell' uomo; e non è niuno che l' uomo sappia sia ritornato dello inferno.	1 And this is the false argument they use, 'Our life is short and dreary, there is no remedy when our endcomes, no one is known to have come back from Hades.
2 Però che noi siamo nati di niente, e dopo questa vita saremo sì come non fossimo mai stati; però che fumo (e vento) è stato sufflato nelli nasi nostri; è parola favilla a commuovere il cuore nostro.	2 We came into being by chance and afterwards shal be as though we had never been. The breath in ournostrils is a puff of smoke, reason a spark from the beating of our hearts;
3 E lo spirito si spanderae sì come molle aere, e la vita nostra trapasserae sì come ombra di nuvolo, e disfarassi sì come nebula, cacciata dalli raggi del sole, e dal calore di quello aggravata.	3 extinguish this and the body turns to ashes, and the spirit melts away like the yielding air.
4 Il nome nostro si dimenticherae per lo tempo, e niuno averà in memoria delle opere nostre.	4 In time, our name wil be forgotten, nobody wil remember what we have done; our life will pass awaylike wisps of cloud, dissolving like the mist that the sun's rays drive away and that its heat dispels.
5 Il tempo nostro sì è uno passamento d' ombra, e non ritornerae poi la fine nostra; però ch' ella sì è consegnata, e niuno ritorna.	5 For our days are the passing of a shadow, our end is without return, the seal is affixed and nobodycomes back.
6 Venite adunque, e logoriamo li beni che sono; e usiamo la creatura sì come in giovinezza affret-. tatamente.	6 'Come then, let us enjoy the good things of today, let us use created things with the zest of youth:
7 Ed empiamoci di vino prezioso e unguenti; e non ci passi il fiore del tempo.	7 take our fil of the dearest wines and perfumes, on no account forgo the flowers of spring
8 Coroniamci di rose, inanzi ch' elle si guastino; nullo prato sia, lo quale lo nostro desiderio non trapassi.	8 but crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither,
9 Niuno di noi sia senza parte della nostra concupiscenza; in ogni luogo lasciamo li segnali della nostra letizia, però che questa si è la parte nostra, e questa si è la sorte nostra.	9 no meadow excluded from our orgy; let us leave the signs of our revelry everywhere, since this is ourportion, this our lot!
10 Aggraviamo lo povero giusto, e non perdoniamo alla vedova, e non onorifichiamo li canuti dello antico tempo.	10 'As for the upright man who is poor, let us oppress him; let us not spare the widow, nor respect oldage, white-haired with many years.
11 Sia la fortezza nostra la legge della giustizia; però che quelli che sono poveri sono a noi inutili.	11 Let our might be the yardstick of right, since weakness argues its own futility.
12 Inganniamo il giusto, però ch' egli è disutile a noi, e sì è contrario alle opere nostre, e rimpròveraci li peccati della legge, e diffama contro a noi li peccati della disciplina nostra.	12 Let us lay traps for the upright man, since he annoys us and opposes our way of life, reproaches us forour sins against the Law, and accuses us of sins against our upbringing.
13 Egli promette ch' egli ha la scienza di Dio, e appellasi figliuolo di Dio.	13 He claims to have knowledge of God, and calls himself a child of the Lord.
14 Egli è fatto a noi spianatore delli nostri pensieri.	14 We see him as a reproof to our way of thinking, the very sight of him weighs our spirits down;
15 Egli è grave a noi eziandio a vederlo, però che la sua vita sì è dissomigliante all' altre, e le sue vie sono immutate.	15 for his kind of life is not like other people's, and his ways are quite different.
16 Sì come bugiardi siamo estimati da lui, ? guardasi dalle nostre vie sì come dalle cose sozzissime, e antipone la fine de' giusti, e vantasi che il suo padre è Iddio.	16 In his opinion we are counterfeit; he avoids our ways as he would filth; he proclaims the final end of theupright as blessed and boasts of having God for his father.
17 Veggiamo dunque, se le [sue] parole sono vere; tentiamolo di quelle cose che li debbono avvenire, e sapremo qual sia la fine sua.	17 Let us see if what he says is true, and test him to see what sort of end he wil have.
18 S' egli è vero figliuolo di Dio, elli il riceverà, è libererallo delle mani delli avversarii.	18 For if the upright man is God's son, God wil help him and rescue him from the clutches of hisenemies.
19 Con ingiuria e con tormento proviamo lui, acciò che noi sappiamo la riverenza sua, e proviamo la pazienza sua.	19 Let us test him with cruelty and with torture, and thus explore this gentleness of his and put hispatience to the test.
20 E condanniamolo a morte sozzissima; e conosceremo li suoi intendimenti delle sue parole.	20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death since God wil rescue him -- or so he claims.'
21 Queste cose pensarono, ed errarono; però che la loro malizia li accecoe.	21 This is the way they reason, but they are misled, since their malice makes them blind.
22 E non conobbono li sacramenti di Dio, e non sperarono mercede di giustizia, e non giudicarono l'onore dell' anime sante.	22 They do not know the hidden things of God, they do not hope for the reward of holiness, they do notbelieve in a reward for blameless souls.
23 Però che Iddio creoe l'uomo da non potere essere vinto, e fecelo alla similitudine sua.	23 For God created human beings to be immortal, he made them as an image of his own nature;
24 Ma per la invidia del diavolo la morte sì entrò nel mondo.	24 Death came into the world only through the Devil's envy, as those who belong to him find to their cost.
25 Sèguitano il diavolo coloro che sono dalla parte sua.
