| 1 - Quando il Signore Dio tuo avrà sperdute le genti la cui terra egli ti darà, e ne sarai venuto in possesso, ed abiterai nelle sue città e nelle sue case, | 1 "When the LORD your God cuts off the nations whose land the LORD your God gives you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses, |
| 2 stabilirai tre città in mezzo alla terra che il Signore Dio tuo ti darà a possedere; | 2 you shall set apart three cities for you in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess. |
| 3 ne renderai agevole il cammino; e dividerai in tre parti eguali l'estensione della tua terra, affinchè quegli che è fuggiasco a causa d'un omicidio abbia vicino il luogo dove possa rifugiarsi. | 3 You shall prepare the roads, and divide into three parts the area of the land which the LORD your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them. |
| 4 Ecco la legge riguardante l'omicida fuggiasco, la cui vita dev'essere salvata: Chi avrà ferito un suo prossimo senza saperlo, e che possa provarsi non aver avuto contro lui odio alcuno nè ieri nè ieri l'altro; | 4 "This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If any one kills his neighbor unintentionally without having been at enmity with him in time past-- |
| 5 come se, essendo semplicemente andato con lui nel bosco a tagliar legna, nel tagliarla gli fosse sfuggita di mano la scure, ed il ferro uscito dal manico avesse colpito ed ucciso l'amico; costui si rifugerà in una delle sopraddette città, e sarà salvo. | 5 as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies--he may flee to one of these cities and save his life; |
| 6 Così [non avverrà] che il prossimo di quegli il cui sangue è stato versato, nell'impeto del dolore insegua l'uccisore e, se la via è troppo lunga, lo raggiunga, e metta a morte uno che di morte non è reo, constando non aver egli avuto alcun odio contro di quello che è rimasto ucciso. | 6 lest the avenger of blood in hot anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him, because the way is long, and wound him mortally, though the man did not deserve to die, since he was not at enmity with his neighbor in time past. |
| 7 Per questo io ti comando che tu scelga le tre città ad egual distanza una dall'altra. | 7 Therefore I command you, You shall set apart three cities. |
| 8 Quando poi il Signore Dio tuo avrà allargato i tuoi confini, come giurò a' padri tuoi, e ti avrà data tutta la terra che ad essi promise | 8 And if the LORD your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers-- |
| 9 (purchè però tu custodisca i suoi comandamenti, e tu faccia quel ch'io oggi ti comando, di amar il Signore Dio tuo, e di camminar sempre per le sue vie), aggiungerai altre tre città, e raddoppierai il numero delle prime tre, | 9 provided you are careful to keep all this commandment, which I command you this day, by loving the LORD your God and by walking ever in his ways--then you shall add three other cities to these three, |
| 10 acciò non sia versato sangue innocente nella terra che il Signore Dio tuo ti darà a possedere, e tu non sii reo di sangue. | 10 lest innocent blood be shed in your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance, and so the guilt of bloodshed be upon you. |
| 11 Se uno, avendo in odio un suo prossimo, avrà insidiato alla sua vita, lo avrà assalito e percosso e fatto morire, e poi si sarà rifugiato in una delle sopraddette città, | 11 "But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and attacks him, and wounds him mortally so that he dies, and the man flees into one of these cities, |
| 12 gli anziani della sua città manderanno a portarlo via dal luogo di rifugio, lo consegneranno al prossimo di quegli il cui sangue è stato versato, ed egli morrà. | 12 then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood, so that he may die. |
| 13 Non n'aver compassione: togli da Israele [la colpa d'aver versato] un sangue innocente; e bene te ne verrà. | 13 Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, so that it may be well with you. |
| 14 Non moverai e non tramuterai i termini del prossimo tuo, fissati da quelli che ti precederono nel possesso che il Signore Dio tuo ti darà nella terra della quale diverrai padrone. | 14 "In the inheritance which you will hold in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess, you shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which the men of old have set. |
| 15 Non farà uno solo testimonianza contro nessuno, qualunque sia il suo delitto e misfatto; ma tutto si concluderà sulla parola di due o tre testimoni. | 15 "A single witness shall not prevail against a man for any crime or for any wrong in connection with any offense that he has committed; only on the evidence of two witnesses, or of three witnesses, shall a charge be sustained. |
| 16 Se un bugiardo testimone si presenterà contro di uno, accusandolo di qualche colpa, | 16 If a malicious witness rises against any man to accuse him of wrongdoing, |
| 17 i due de' quali si tratta la causa compariranno insieme alla presenza del Signore, davanti ai sacerdoti e giudici che saranno allora in carica. | 17 then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days; |
| 18 Se questi, fatta diligentissima investigazione, troveranno che quel falso testimone ha asserito menzogna contro un suo fratello, | 18 the judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, |
| 19 renderanno a lui quel ch'egli voleva fare al suo fratello. Estirperai di mezzo a te un tal male, | 19 then you shall do to him as he had meant to do to his brother; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you. |
| 20 acciò udendolo gli altri abbian timore, e mai più ardiscano far tali cose. | 20 And the rest shall hear, and fear, and shall never again commit any such evil among you. |
| 21 Non ne avrai compassione, ma esigerai da lui vita per vita, occhio per occhio, dente per dente, mano per mano, piede per piede. | 21 Your eye shall not pity; it shall be life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. |
