1 Ma il Signore di mezzo al turbine parlò a Giobbe, e disse:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 Chi è costui, che avviluppa sentenze in ragionamenti da ignorante?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 Cingi da uomo forte i tuoi fianchi: io ti interrogherò, e tu rispondimi.	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 Dov' eri tu quand'io gettava i fondamenti della terra? dimmelo se ne sai tanto.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Sai tu chi ne fissò le misure? e chi tese sopra di essa il livello?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 Qual hanno appoggio le basi di lei? e chi pose la sua pietra angolare,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 Allorché davano laude a me tutte insieme le stelle della mattina, e voci di giubilo alzavano tutti i figliuoli di Dio?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 Chi chiuse le porte al mare quand'ei scappò fuora, come uscendo dall'alvo materno?	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 Quand'io la nube gli diedi per vestimento, e nella caligine lo rinvolsi, come un bambino nelle sue fasce?	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 Lo ristrinsi dentro a' confini posti da me, e gli diedi sue porte, e contrafforti;	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 E dissi: Sin qua tu verrai, ma non passerai più innanzi, e qui frangerai gli orgogliosi tuoi flutti.	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 Forse dopo che sei al mondo desti legge alla luce della mattina, e all'aurora mostrasti il luogo onde uscir fuori?	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 Hai tu scossi colle tue mani i cardini della terra, e ne hai tu sbalzati gli empj?	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 Tornerà come fango il sigillo, e sussisterà come una veste:	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 Sarà agli empj tolto il loro splendore, e la eccelsa loro possanza sarà annichilata.	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 Se' tu entrato nel fondo del mare, e hai tu passeggiato nel profondo dell'abisso?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 Son elleno state aperte a te le porte di morte, e que' tenebrosi liminari gli hai tu veduti?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 Hai tu considerata l'ampiezza della terra? Dimmi, conosci tu tutte queste cose?	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 Dove sia che abiti la luce, e qual sia il ripostiglio delle tenebre:	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 Onde e l'una, e le altre tu condur possa a' luoghi loro, sapendo la via delle case loro.	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!
21 Sapevi tu una volta di aver a nascere? Eri tu informato del numero de' tuoi giorni?	21 If you do know, you must have been born when they were, you must be very old by now!
22 Se' tu entrato dove le nevi si serbano, ed hai tu veduto dove si raccolgan le grandini	22 Have you visited the place where the snow is stored? Have you seen the stores of hail,
23 Preparate da me per farne uso contro il nemico, pel giorno di guerra, e di conflitto?	23 which I keep for times of distress, for days of battle and war?
24 Per quale strada si sparge la luce, e il calore si spande sopra la terra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 Chi segnò il corso alla impetuosa pioggia, e la strada al tuono romoreggiante?	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 E fece piovere sulla terra deserta priva di abitatore, dove nissun de' mortali pone sua stanza,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 Inondandola, benché inabitabile, e desolata, affinchè verdi erbette produca?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 Chi è il padre della pioggia, e chi generò le gocciole della rugiada?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 Da qual seno uscì il ghiaccio, e chi dall'aria mandò il gelo?	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 Le acque si indurano come pietre, e la superficie del mar si rappiglia.	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 Potrai tu forse legare le stelle folgoreggianti delle Pleiadi, o sconvolgere il corso di Orione?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 Se' tu forse, che fai apparire a suo tempo la stella del mattino, o che fai nascere l'Espero sopra i figliuoli degli uomini?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 Intendi tu l'ordine del cielo, e stabilirai le ragioni di lui sopra la terra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 Alzerai tu la tua voce alla nube per far venire sopra di te un diluvio di acque?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 Spedirai tu i folgori, e questi anderanno, e ti diranno al ritorno: Siamo a' tuoi cenni?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 Chi nel petto dell'uomo pose la saggezza, e chi al gallo diede discernimento?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 Chi esporrà il governo de' cieli, e farà tacere la celeste armonia.	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 Cosi fu fin da quando si rappesa la polvere sopra la terra, e le sue zolle ai rassodarono.	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 Anderai tu a far preda per la lionessa, e satollerai le brame de' suoi lioncini,	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 Allorché giaciono nelle tane, e stanno ansiosi per le caverne?	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 Chi preparò il suo nudrimento al corvo, allorché i suoi pulcini gracchiano verso Dio, e van qua, e là, perché non han da mangiare?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
