| 1 Indi Eliu seguitò a dire: | 1 And Elihu continued, and said: |
| 2 Soffrimi ancor un poco, ed io mi spiegherò con te: perocché ho tutt'ora da dire per la causa di Dio. | 2 "Bear with me a little, and I will show you, for I have yet something to say on God's behalf. |
| 3 Ripiglierò da' suoi principj la mia sentenza, e proverò, che giusto è il mio Creatore. | 3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and ascribe righteousness to my Maker. |
| 4 Perocché veraci, e senza menzogna sono i miei detti, e una dottrina, che è perfetta, a te piacerà. | 4 For truly my words are not false; one who is perfect in knowledge is with you. |
| 5 Dio non rigetta i potenti, essendo pur egli il Potente. | 5 "Behold, God is mighty, and does not despise any; he is mighty in strength of understanding. |
| 6 Ma non salva gli empj, e a' poveri rende ragione. | 6 He does not keep the wicked alive, but gives the afflicted their right. |
| 7 Non torcerà i suoi sguardi dal giusto: egli è che colloca sopra trono stabile i regi, ed eglino sono esaltati. | 7 He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but with kings upon the throne he sets them for ever, and they are exalted. |
| 8 E se poi saran messi in catena, o annodati da' lacci di povertà, | 8 And if they are bound in fetters and caught in the cords of affliction, |
| 9 Egli ad essi accennerà le opere loro, e le loro scelleratezze, perocché ei furon crudeli. | 9 then he declares to them their work and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly. |
| 10 Aprirà loro le orecchie adiri di correggerli, e gli ammonirà, perché si ritraggano dall'iniquità. | 10 He opens their ears to instruction, and commands that they return from iniquity. |
| 11 Se ascolteranno, e saranno docili, finiranno i giorni loro felicemente, e gli anni in gloria: | 11 If they hearken and serve him, they complete their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasantness. |
| 12 Ma se non ascolteranno, urteran nella spada, e periranno nella stoltezza. | 12 But if they do not hearken, they perish by the sword, and die without knowledge. |
| 13 Gli ipocriti, e i furbi provocan l'ira di Dio, e ridotti in catene non alzan la voce a lui. | 13 "The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry for help when he binds them. |
| 14 Moriranno di morte violenta, e la loro vita finirà tragli uomini impuri. | 14 They die in youth, and their life ends in shame. |
| 15 Egli trarrà fuori d'angustia il povero, e nella tribolazione lo istruirà. | 15 He delivers the afflicted by their affliction, and opens their ear by adversity. |
| 16 Ei ti salverà dalla fossa larga mente angusta, e che non ha fondo sotto di se: ti riposerai alla tua mensa carica di grasse vivande. | 16 He also allured you out of distress into a broad place where there was no cramping, and what was set on your table was full of fatness. |
| 17 La tua causa è stata giudicata come di empio: riceverai secondo i meriti di tua causa. | 17 "But you are full of the judgment on the wicked; judgment and justice seize you. |
| 18 Non ti soverchi adunque lo sdegno per farti opprimere alcuno, né ti seducano i molti doni. | 18 Beware lest wrath entice you into scoffing; and let not the greatness of the ransom turn you aside. |
| 19 Umilia senza la sferza la tua grandezza, e tutti quelli, che si fanno forti in lor possanza. | 19 Will your cry avail to keep you from distress, or all the force of your strength? |
| 20 Non allungare la notte (in pensando), come ne' loro paesi alcuni popoli vanno di bene in meglio. | 20 Do not long for the night, when peoples are cut off in their place. |
| 21 Guardati dal torcere il passo verso l'iniquità; perocché questa cominciasti a seguire dopo la tua afflizione. | 21 Take heed, do not turn to iniquity, for this you have chosen rather than affliction. |
| 22 Rifletti come Dio è eccelso in sua possanza, e nissun de' legislatori è simile a lui. | 22 Behold, God is exalted in his power; who is a teacher like him? |
| 23 Chi potrà indagar le sue vie? E chi potrà dire a lui, Tu hai fatto ingiustizia? | 23 Who has prescribed for him his way, or who can say, 'Thou hast done wrong? |
| 24 Ricordati che tu l'opera di lui non comprendi, che fu celebrata dagli uomini. | 24 "Remember to extol his work, of which men have sung. |
| 25 Gli uomini tutti lo veggono, ciascuno lo mira da lungi. | 25 All men have looked on it; man beholds it from afar. |
| 26 Certamente Iddio è grande, e sorpassa ogni nostro sapere: e il numero degli anni di lui non può rinvenirsi. | 26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not; the number of his years is unsearchable. |
| 27 Egli attrae le stille dell'acqua, e versa le piogge come torrenti, | 27 For he draws up the drops of water, he distils his mist in rain |
| 28 Che si sciolgono dalle nuvole, onde tutto lassù è coperto. | 28 which the skies pour down, and drop upon man abundantly. |
| 29 Quando egli vuole distende le nuvole, come suo padiglione, | 29 Can any one understand the spreading of the clouds, the thunderings of his pavilion? |
| 30 E folgori manda, e i suoi lampi di colassù, e cuopre gli estremi lidi del mare. | 30 Behold, he scatters his lightning about him, and covers the roots of the sea. |
| 31 Per mezzo di tali cose egli esercita i suoi giudizj sopra le genti, e al gran numero degli uomini da nutrimento. | 31 For by these he judges peoples; he gives food in abundance. |
| 32 Nelle sue mani nasconde la luce, e le comanda di tornare di nuovo. | 32 He covers his hands with the lightning, and commands it to strike the mark. |
| 33 Egli fa intendere a chi lo ama, ch'ell' è suo dominio, e che a quella ei può pervenire. | 33 Its crashing declares concerning him, who is jealous with anger against iniquity. |
