1 And when king Ezechias heard these words, he rent his garments, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.	1 Lorsque le roi Ezéchias eut entendu cela, il déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d'un sac, et entra dans la maison du Seigneur.
2 And he sent Eliacim, who was over the house, and Sobna the scribe, and the ancients of the priests covered with sackcloths, to Isaias the prophet the son of Amos,	2 Et il envoya Eliacim, grand maître (intendant) de sa maison, Sobna, secrétaire (le scribe), et les (plus) anciens des prêtres, couverts de sacs, vers le prophète Isaïe, fils d'Amos ;
3 And they said to him: Thus saith Ezechias: This day is a day of tribulation, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: the children are come to the birth, and the woman in travail hath not strength.	3 et ils lui dirent : Voici ce que dit Ezéchias : Ce jour est un jour d'affliction, de reproche et de blasphème. Les enfants sont sur le point de naître, mais celle qui est en travail n'a pas assez de force pour enfanter.
4 It may be the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rabsaces, whom the king of the Assyrians his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and to reprove with words, which the Lord thy God hath heard: and do thou offer prayer for the remnants that are found.	4 Peut-être que le Seigneur ton Dieu aura entendu les paroles de Rabsacès, qui a été envoyé par le roi des Assyriens son maître, pour blasphémer le Dieu vivant, et pour lui (l') insulter par des paroles que le Seigneur ton Dieu a entendues. Fais donc une prière pour le reste qui subsiste encore.
5 So the servants of king Ezechias came to Isaias.	5 Les serviteurs du roi Ezéchias allèrent donc trouver Isaïe.
6 And Isaias said to them: Thus shall you say to your master: Thus saith the Lord: Be not afraid for the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of the Assyrians have blasphemed me.	6 Et Isaïe leur répondit : Vous direz ceci à votre maître : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Ne crains pas (à cause de) ces paroles que tu as entendues, par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi des Assyriens m'ont blasphémé.
7 Behold I will send a spirit upon him, and he shall hear a message, and shall return into his own country, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own country.	7 Je vais lui envoyer un esprit, et il apprendra une nouvelle, et il retournera dans son pays, et je l'y ferai périr par l'épée.
8 And Rabsaces returned, and found the king of the Assyrians besieging Lobna: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachis.	8 Rabsacès retourna donc auprès du roi des Assyriens, et il le trouva qui assiégeait Lobna ; car il avait appris qu'il s'était retiré de devant Lachis.
9 And when he heard of Theraca king of Ethiopia: Behold, he is come out to fight with thee: and was going against him, he sent messengers to Ezechias, saying:	9 Et Sennachérib reçut une nouvelle au sujet de Tharaca, roi d'Ethiopie. On lui dit : Voici qu'il s'est mis en marche pour vous combattre ; et sur le point de s'avancer contre ce roi, il envoya ses ambassadeurs à Ezéchias, avec cet ordre :
10 Thus shall you say to Ezechias king of Juda: Let not thy God deceive thee, in whom thou trustest: and do not say: Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of the Assyrians.	10 Vous direz à Ezéchias, roi de Juda : Ne vous laissez pas séduire par votre Dieu, en qui vous mettez votre confiance, et ne dites pas : Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi des Assyriens.
11 Behold thou hast heard what the kings of the Assyrians have done to all countries, how they have laid them waste: and canst thou alone be delivered?	11 Car vous avez appris vous-même ce que les rois des Assyriens ont fait à toutes les autres nations, et comment ils les ont ruinées. Pourrez-vous donc, vous seul, être délivré(s) ?
12 Have the gods of the nations delivered any of them, whom my fathers have destroyed, to wit, Gozan, and Haran, and Reseph, and the children of Eden that were in Thelassar?	12 Les dieux des nations ont-ils délivré les peuples que mes pères ont ravagés ? Ont-ils délivré Gozan, Haran, Réseph, et les fils d'Eden, qui étaient à Thélassar ?
13 Where is the king of Emath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Ana and of Ava?	13 Où est maintenant le roi d'Emath, le roi d'Arphad, le roi de la ville de Sépharvaïm, d'Ana et d'Ava ?
14 And when Ezechias had received the letter of the hand of the messengers, and had read it, he went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord,	14 Lorsqu'Ezéchias eut reçu la lettre de Sennachérib de la main des ambassadeurs, il la lut, vint dans le temple, et étendit la lettre devant le Seigneur,
15 And he prayed in his sight, saying: O Lord God of Israel, who sitteth upon the cherubims, thou alone art the God of all the kings of the earth: thou madest heaven and earth:	15 et il pria devant lui en ces termes : Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël, qui êtes assis sur les chérubins, c'est vous seul qui êtes le Dieu de tous les rois du monde ; c'est vous qui avez fait le ciel et la terre.
16 Incline thy ear, and hear: open, O Lord, thy eyes, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who hath sent to upbraid unto us the living God.	16 Prêtez l'oreille et écoutez ; ouvrez les yeux, Seigneur, et considérez ; écoutez toutes les paroles de Sennachérib, qui a envoyé ses ambassadeurs pour blasphémer (incriminer) devant nous le Dieu vivant.
17 Of a truth, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have destroyed nations, and the lands of them all.	17 Il est vrai, Seigneur, que les rois des Assyriens ont détruit les nations, qu'ils ont ravagé toutes leurs terres,
18 And they have cast their gods into the fire: for they were not Rods, but the works of men's hands of wood and stone, and they destroyed them.	18 et qu'ils ont jeté leurs dieux dans le feu, et les ont anéantis, car ce n'étaient pas des dieux, mais des images de bois et de pierre faites par la main des hommes.
19 Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know, that thou art the Lord the only God.	19 Sauvez-nous donc maintenant, Seigneur notre Dieu, des mains de ce roi, afin que tous les royaumes de la terre sachent que vous êtes seul le Seigneur Dieu.
20 And Isaias the son of Amos sent to Ezechias, saying: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I have heard the prayer thou hast made to me concerning Sennacherib king of the Assyrians.	20 Alors (Or) Isaïe, fils d'Amos, envoya dire à Ezéchias : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël : J'ai entendu la prière que tu m'as faite touchant Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens.
21 This is the word, that the Lord hath spoken of him: The virgin the daughter of Sion hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn: the daughter of Jerusalem hath wagged her head behind thy back.	21 Voici ce que le Seigneur a dit de lui : Elle t'a méprisé, elle t'a insulté, la vierge fille de Sion ; elle a secoué la tête derrière toi, la fille de Jérusalem.
22 Whom hast thou reproached, and whom hast thou blasphemed? against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thy eyes on high? against the holy one of Israel.	22 Qui as-tu insulté, qui as-tu blasphémé ? contre qui as-tu haussé la voix et élevé tes yeux insolents ? C'est contre le saint d'Israël.
23 By the hand of thy servants thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said: With the multitude of my chariots I have gone up to the height of the mountains, to the top of Libanus, and have cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees. And I have entered into the furthest parts thereof, and the forest of its Carmel.	23 Tu as blasphémé le Seigneur par (l'entremise de) tes serviteurs, et tu as dit : J'ai gravi le sommet des montagnes du Liban avec la multitude de mes chars (quadriges) ; j'ai abattu ses beaux cèdres, et les plus grands de ses sapins ; j'ai (même) pénétré jusqu'à ses extrémités, et j'ai abattu la forêt de son Carmel.
24 I have cut down, and I have drunk strange waters, and have dried up with the soles of my feet all the shut up waters.	24 (C'est moi qui l'ai coupée par le pied.) J'ai bu les eaux étrangères, et j'ai desséché avec la plante de mes pieds toutes celles qui étaient fermées.
25 Hast thou not heard what I have done from the beginning? from the days of old I have formed it, and now I have brought it to effect: that fenced cities of fighting men should be turned to heaps of ruin:	25 N'as-tu pas entendu dire ce que j'ai fait dès le commencement ? Dès les jours anciens j'ai formé ce dessein, et maintenant je l'ai exécuté ; les villes fortifiées des combattants restent comme des collines en ruines (collines ruinées, note).
26 And the inhabitants of them, were weak of hand, they trembled and were confounded, they became like the grass of the field, and the green herb on the tops of houses, which withered before it came to maturity.	26 Les mains ont tremblé à ceux qui étaient dedans ; ils ont été confondus, et ils sont devenus comme l'herbe des champs, et comme l'herbe verdoyante des toits, qui se sèche avant de venir à maturité.
27 Thy dwelling and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy way I knew before, and thy rage against me.	27 Ta demeure, et ton entrée, et ta sortie, et ta voie, je les ai prévues (sues d'avance), ainsi que ta fureur contre moi.
28 Thou hast been mad against me, and thy pride hath come up to my ears: therefore I will put a ring in thy nose, and a bit between thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way, by which thou camest.	28 Tu as déliré (as été furieux) contre moi, et ton orgueil est monté jusqu'à mes oreilles. Je te mettrai donc une boucle au nez et un mors à la bouche, et je te ferai retourner par le même chemin par lequel tu es venu.
29 And to thee, O Ezechias, this shall be a sign: Eat this year what thou shalt find: and in the second year, such things as spring of themselves: but in the third year sow and reap: plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.	29 Mais pour toi, (ô) Ezéchias, voici le signe que je te donnerai : Mange cette année ce que tu pourras trouver ; la seconde année, ce qui naîtra de soi-même ; mais, la troisième année, semez et récoltez, plantez des vignes, et mangez-en le fruit.
30 And whatsoever shall be left of the house of Juda, shall take root downward, and bear fruit upward.	30 Et tout ce qui restera de la maison de Juda jettera ses racines en bas, et poussera son fruit en haut.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and that which shall be saved out of mount Sion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.	31 Car il sortira de Jérusalem un reste, et il en demeurera de la montagne de Sion, qui seront sauvés. Le zèle du Seigneur des armées fera cela.
32 Wherefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of the Assyrians: He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow into it, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a trench about it.	32 C'est pourquoi voici ce que le Seigneur dit du roi des Assyriens : Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, il ne tirera pas de flèche contre ses murailles, elle ne sera pas forcée par les boucliers, et environnée de retranchements.
33 By the way that he came, he shall return: and into this city he shall not come, saith the Lord.	33 Il retournera par le même chemin par lequel il est venu, et il n'entrera pas dans cette ville, dit le Seigneur.
34 And I will protect this city, and will save it for my own sake, and for David my servant's sake.	34 Je protégerai cette ville, et je la sauverai, à cause de moi et de mon serviteur David.
35 And it came to pass that night, that an angel of the Lord came, and slew in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand. And when he arose early in the morning, he saw all the bodies of the dead.	35 En cette nuit, l'ange du Seigneur vint dans le camp des Assyriens, et y tua cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes ; et Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, s'étant levé au point du jour, vit tous ces cadavres ; et il se retira (aussitôt),
36 And Sennacherib king of the Assyrians departing went away, and he returned and abode in Ninive.	36 et il revint dans son pays, et demeura à Ninive.
37 And as he was worshipping in the temple of Nesroch his god, Adramelech and Sarasar his sons slew him with the sword, and they fled into the land of the Armenians, and Asarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.	37 Et tandis qu'il adorait Nesroch, son dieu, dans son temple, ses deux fils, Adramélech et Sarasar, le tuèrent à coups d'épée, et s'enfuirent en Arménie ; et Asarhaddon, son fils régna à sa place.
