1 Mentre Esdra pregava e faceva questa confessione piangendo, prostrato davanti alla casa di Dio, si riunì intorno a lui un'assemblea molto numerosa d'Israeliti, uomini, donne e fanciulli, e il popolo piangeva dirottamente.	1 While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel; for the people wept bitterly.
2 Allora Secania, figlio di Iechièl, uno dei figli di Elam, prese la parola e disse a Esdra: "Noi siamo stati infedeli verso il nostro Dio, sposando donne straniere, prese dalle popolazioni del luogo. Orbene: c'è ancora una speranza per Israele nonostante ciò.	2 And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: "We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.
3 Ora noi facciamo questa alleanza davanti al nostro Dio: rimanderemo tutte queste donne e i figli nati da esse, secondo il tuo consiglio, mio signore, e il consiglio di quelli che tremano davanti al comando del nostro Dio. Si farà secondo la legge!	3 Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law.
4 Alzati, perché a te è affidato questo compito; noi saremo con te; sii forte e mettiti all'opera!".	4 Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it."
5 Allora Esdra si alzò e fece giurare ai capi dei sacerdoti e dei leviti e a tutto Israele che avrebbero agito secondo quelle parole; essi giurarono.	5 Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath.
6 Esdra allora, alzatosi davanti alla casa di Dio, andò nella camera di Giovanni, figlio di Eliasib. Là egli passò la notte, senza prendere cibo né bere acqua, perché era in lutto a causa dell'infedeltà dei rimpatriati.	6 Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehohanan the son of Eliashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water; for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles.
7 Poi fu fatta passare la voce in Giuda e Gerusalemme a tutti i rimpatriati che si radunassero in Gerusalemme:	7 And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem,
8 a chiunque non fosse venuto entro tre giorni - così disponeva il consiglio dei capi e degli anziani - sarebbero stati votati allo sterminio tutti i beni ed egli stesso sarebbe stato escluso dalla comunità dei rimpatriati.	8 and that if any one did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles.
9 Allora tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Beniamino si radunarono a Gerusalemme entro tre giorni; si era al nono mese, il venti del mese. Tutto il popolo stava nella piazza del tempio, tremante per questo evento e per gli scrosci della pioggia.	9 Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain.
10 Allora il sacerdote Esdra si alzò e disse loro: "Voi avete commesso un atto d'infedeltà, sposando donne straniere: così avete accresciuto la colpevolezza d'Israele.	10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have trespassed and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel.
11 Ma ora rendete lode al Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, e fate la sua volontà, separandovi dalle popolazioni del paese e dalle donne straniere".	11 Now then make confession to the LORD the God of your fathers, and do his will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives."
12 Tutta l'assemblea rispose a gran voce: "Sì, dobbiamo fare secondo la tua parola.	12 Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, "It is so; we must do as you have said.
13 Ma il popolo è numeroso e siamo al tempo delle piogge; non è possibile restare all'aperto. D'altra parte non è lavoro di un giorno o di due, perché siamo in molti ad aver peccato in questa materia.	13 But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a work for one day or for two; for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
14 I nostri capi stiano a rappresentare tutta l'assemblea; e tutti quelli delle nostre città che hanno sposato donne straniere vengano in date determinate e accompagnati dagli anziani della rispettiva città e dai loro giudici, finché non abbiano allontanato da noi l'ira ardente del nostro Dio per questa causa".	14 Let our officials stand for the whole assembly; let all in our cities who have taken foreign wives come at appointed times, and with them the elders and judges of every city, till the fierce wrath of our God over this matter be averted from us."
15 Soltanto Giònata figlio di Asaèl e Iaczeia figlio di Tikva si opposero, appoggiati da Mesullàm e dal levita Sabbetài.	15 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullum and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
16 I rimpatriati fecero come era stato proposto: il sacerdote Esdra si scelse alcuni uomini, capifamiglia, uno per casato, tutti designati per nome. Essi iniziarono le sedute il primo giorno del decimo mese per esaminare la questione	16 Then the returned exiles did so. Ezra the priest selected men, heads of fathers' houses, according to their fathers' houses, each of them designated by name. On the first day of the tenth month they sat down to examine the matter;
17 e terminarono di esaminare tutti gli uomini che avevano sposato donne straniere il primo giorno del primo mese.	17 and by the first day of the first month they had come to the end of all the men who had married foreign women.
18 Tra gli appartenenti ai sacerdoti, che avevano sposato donne straniere, c'erano: dei figli di Giosuè figlio di Iozadàk e tra i suoi fratelli: Maaseia, Elièzer, Iarib e Godolia.	18 Of the sons of the priests who had married foreign women were found Ma-aseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah, of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren.
19 Essi hanno promesso con giuramento di rimandare le loro donne e hanno offerto un ariete in espiazione della loro colpa.	19 They pledged themselves to put away their wives, and their guilt offering was a ram of the flock for their guilt.
