| 1 Quiconque croit que Jésus est le Christ, est né de Dieu. Mais aussi, si l’on aime celui qui a donné la vie, on aime celui qui est né de lui. | 1 Every one who believes that Jesus is the Christ is a child of God, and every one who loves the parent loves the child. |
| 2 Donc, quand nous aimons Dieu et faisons ce qu’il nous demande, nous savons que nous aimons aussi les enfants de Dieu. | 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. |
| 3 L’amour de Dieu consiste à observer ses commandements, et ses commandements ne sont pas pesants. | 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. |
| 4 En effet, tout ce qui est né de Dieu est victorieux du monde. Et cette victoire remportée sur le monde, c’est notre foi. | 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, our faith. |
| 5 Qui donc est vainqueur du monde, sinon celui qui croit que Jésus est le Fils de Dieu? | 5 Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? |
| 6 C’est lui, Jésus Christ, qui vient par l’eau et par le sang. Pas seulement par l’eau, mais par l’eau et par le sang. Et l’Esprit est là pour l’affirmer, l’Esprit qui est vérité. | 6 This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. |
| 7 Ils sont trois à rendre témoignage: | 7 And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth. |
| 8 l’Esprit, l’eau et le sang, et les trois se rencontrent. | 8 There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree. |
| 9 Nous recevons bien le témoignage des humains: le témoignage de Dieu a bien plus de valeur. Et voici le témoignage de Dieu: il a témoigné au sujet de son Fils. | 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has borne witness to his Son. |
| 10 Celui qui croit au Fils de Dieu a donc en lui ce témoignage de Dieu. Par contre, celui qui ne croit pas fait de Dieu un menteur: il ne croit pas au témoignage que Dieu a rendu au sujet de son Fils. | 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne to his Son. |
| 11 Et voici son témoignage: Dieu nous a donné la vie éternelle et cette vie se trouve dans son Fils. | 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. |
| 12 Celui qui a le Fils a la vie, celui qui n’a pas le Fils de Dieu n’a pas la vie. | 12 He who has the Son has life; he who has not the Son of God has not life. |
| 13 Je vous écris donc pour que vous sachiez que vous avez la vie éternelle, vous tous qui croyez au Nom du Fils de Dieu. | 13 I write this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. |
| 14 Avec lui nous nous sentons très forts: nous savons qu’il nous écoute toutes les fois que nous demandons en accord avec sa propre volonté. | 14 And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. |
| 15 Et s’il écoute tout ce que nous demandons, nous savons que déjà nous tenons ce que nous lui avons demandé. | 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. |
| 16 Si quelqu’un voit son frère dans le péché - un péché qui n’a pas amené la mort - il doit prier, et Dieu donnera vie à ce frère, puisqu’il ne s’agit pas du péché qui donne la mort. Il y a un péché qui donne la mort et je ne dis pas de prier pour ce péché. | 16 If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal. There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. |
| 17 Toute faute est péché, mais n’est pas pour autant le péché qui donne la mort. | 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. |
| 18 Nous savons que celui qui naît de Dieu ne pèche pas, car Celui qui est né de Dieu le garde et le Mauvais ne peut rien contre nous. | 18 We know that any one born of God does not sin, but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. |
| 19 Nous savons que nous sommes à Dieu, alors que le monde entier reste soumis au Mauvais. | 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world is in the power of the evil one. |
| 20 Nous savons aussi que le Fils de Dieu est venu pour nous ouvrir l’esprit et que nous connaissions Celui qui est vrai: nous sommes en Celui qui est vrai, dans son Fils, Jésus Christ. Lui est le vrai Dieu et il est vie éternelle. | 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, to know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. |
| 21 Mes enfants, gardez-vous des idoles. | 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. |
