SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Façamos o elogio dos homens ilustres, que são nossos antepassados, em sua linhagem.	1 Next let us praise il ustrious men, our ancestors in their successive generations.
2 O Senhor deu-lhes uma glória abundante, desde o princípio do mundo, por um efeito de sua magnificência.	2 The Lord has created an abundance of glory, and displayed his greatness from earliest times.
3 Eles foram soberanos em seus estados, foram homens de grande virtude, dotados de prudência. As predições que anunciaram adquiriram-lhes a dignidade de profetas:	3 Some wielded authority as kings and were renowned for their strength; others were intel igent advisersand uttered prophetic sayings.
4 eles governaram os povos do seu tempo e, com a firmeza de sua sabedoria, deram instruções muito santas ao povo.	4 Others directed the people by their advice, by their understanding of the popular mind, and by the wisewords of their teaching;
5 Com sua habilidade cultivaram a arte das melodias, publicaram os cânticos das escrituras.	5 others composed musical melodies and set down bal ads;
6 Homens ricos de virtude, que tinham gosto pela beleza, e viviam em paz em suas casas.	6 others were rich and powerful, living peaceful y in their homes.
7 Todos eles adquiriram fama junto de seus contemporâneos, e foram a glória de seu tempo.	7 Al these were honoured by their contemporaries and were the glory of their day.
8 Aqueles que deles nasceram deixaram um nome que publica seus louvores.	8 Some of them left a name behind them, so that their praises are stil sung.
9 Outros há, dos quais não se tem lembrança; pereceram como se nunca tivessem existido. Nasceram, eles e seus filhos, como se não tivessem nascido.	9 While others have left no memory, and disappeared as though they had not existed. They are now asthough they had never been, and so too, their children after them.
10 Os primeiros, porém, foram homens de misericórdia; nunca foram esquecidas as obras de sua caridade.	10 But here is a list of il ustrious men whose good works have not been forgotten.
11 Na sua posteridade permanecem os seus bens.	11 In their descendants they find a rich inheritance, their posterity.
12 Os filhos de seus filhos são uma santa linhagem, e seus descendentes mantêm-se fiéis às alianças.	12 Their descendants stand by the commandments and, thanks to them, so do their children's children.
13 Por causa deles seus filhos permanecem para sempre, e sua posteridade, assim como sua glória, não terá fim.	13 Their offspring wil last for ever, their glory will not fade.
14 Seus corpos foram sepultados em paz, seu nome vive de século em século.	14 Their bodies have been buried in peace, and their name lives on for al generations.
15 Proclamem os povos sua sabedoria, e cante a assembléia os seus louvores!	15 The peoples will proclaim their wisdom, the assembly wil celebrate their praises.
16 Henoc agradou a Deus e foi transportado ao paraíso, para excitar as nações à penitência.	16 Enoch pleased the Lord and was transferred to heaven, an example for the conversion of algenerations.
17 Noé foi julgado justo e perfeito, e no tempo da ira tornou-se o elo de reconciliação.	17 Noah was found perfectly upright, in the time of retribution he became the heir: because of him aremnant was preserved for the earth at the coming of the Flood.
18 Por isso foram deixados alguns na terra, quando veio o dilúvio.	18 Everlasting covenants were made with him that never again should every living creature perish byflood.
19 Ele foi o depositário das alianças feitas com o mundo, a fim de que ninguém doravante fosse destruído por dilúvio.	19 Abraham, the great ancestor of a host of nations, no one was ever his equal in glory.
20 Abraão é o pai ilustre de uma infinidade de povos. Ninguém lhe foi igual em glória: guardou a lei do Altíssimo, e fez aliança com ele.	20 He observed the Law of the Most High, and entered into a covenant with him. He confirmed thecovenant in his own flesh, and proved himself faithful under ordeal.
21 O Senhor marcou essa aliança em sua carne; na provação, mostrou-se fiel.	21 The Lord therefore promised him on oath to bless the nations through his descendants, to multiply himlike the dust on the ground, to exalt his descendants like the stars, and to give them the land as their heritage,from one sea to the other, from the River to the ends of the earth.
22 Por isso jurou Deus que o havia de glorificar na sua raça, e prometeu que ele cresceria como o pó da terra.	22 To Isaac too, for the sake of Abraham his father, he assured
23 Prometeu-lhe que exaltaria sua raça como as estrelas, e que seu quinhão de herança se estenderia de um mar a outro: desde o rio até as extremidades da terra.	23 the blessing of al humanity; he caused the covenant to rest on the head of Jacob. He confirmed himin his blessings and gave him the land as his inheritance; he divided it into portions, and shared it out among thetwelve tribes.
24 Ele fez o mesmo com Isaac, por causa de seu pai, Abraão.
25 O Senhor deu-lhe a bênção de todas as nações, e confirmou sua aliança sobre a cabeça de Jacó.
26 Distinguiu-o com suas bênçãos, deu-lhe a herança, e repartiu-a entre as doze tribos.
27 Conservou-lhe homens cheios de misericórdia, que encontraram graça aos olhos de toda carne.
