Judges 21

1 The sons of Israel had also taken an oath at Mizpah, and they said, “None of us shall give his daughters as a wife to the sons of Benjamin.”	1 Les gens d'Israël avaient prononcé ce serment à Miçpa: "Personne d'entre nous ne donnera sa fille enmariage à Benjamin."
2 And they all went to the house of God at Shiloh. And sitting in his sight until evening, they lifted up their voice, and they began to weep, with a great wailing, saying,	2 Le peuple se rendit à Béthel, il resta là assis devant Dieu jusqu'au soir, poussant des gémissements etpleurant à gros sanglots:
3 “Why, O Lord, God of Israel, has this evil happened among your people, so that this day one tribe would be taken away from us?”	3 "Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, disaient-ils, pourquoi faut-il qu'en Israël manque aujourd'hui une tribud'Israël?"
4 Then, rising at first light on the next day, they built an altar. And they offered holocausts and victims of peace offerings there, and they said,	4 Le lendemain, le peuple se leva de bon matin et construisit là un autel; il offrit des holocaustes et dessacrifices de communion.
5 “Who, out of all the tribes of Israel, did not ascend with the army of the Lord?” For they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were at Mizpah, that whoever was not present would be slain.	5 Puis les Israélites dirent: "Qui d'entre toutes les tribus d'Israël n'est pas venu à l'assemblée auprès deYahvé?" Car en un serment solennel on avait déclaré que quiconque ne monterait pas à Miçpa auprès de Yahvémourrait certainement.
6 And the sons of Israel, having been led to repentance over their brother Benjamin, began to say: “One tribe has been taken away from Israel.	6 Or les Israélites furent pris de pitié pour Benjamin leur frère: "Aujourd'hui, disaient-ils, une tribu aété retranchée d'Israël.
7 From where shall they receive wives? For we have all sworn in common that we will not give our daughters to them.”	7 Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, puisque nous avons juré par Yahvé dene pas leur donner de nos filles en mariage?"
8 For this reason, they said, “Who is there, out of all the tribes of Israel, that did not ascend to the Lord at Mizpah?” And behold, the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead were found not to have been among that army.	8 Ils s'informèrent alors: "Quel est celui d'entre les tribus d'Israël, qui n'est pas monté auprès de Yahvéà Miçpa?" Et il se trouva que personne de Yabesh en Galaad n'était venu au camp, à l'assemblée.
9 (Likewise, in the time when they had been at Shiloh, not one of them was found to be there.)	9 Le peuple s'était en effet compté et il n'y avait là personne d'entre les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad.
10 And so they sent ten thousand very robust men, and they instructed them, saying, “Go and strike down the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead with the edge of the sword, including their wives and little ones.”	10 Alors la communauté y envoya 12.000 hommes d'entre les vaillants avec cet ordre: "Allez, et vouspasserez au fil de l'épée les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad, ainsi que les femmes et les enfants.
11 And this shall be what you ought to do: “Everyone of the male gender, as well as all the women who have known men, shall be put to death. But the virgins you shall reserve.”	11 Voici ce que vous ferez: vous vouerez à l'anathème tous les mâles et toutes les femmes qui ontconnu la couche d'un homme, mais vous laisserez la vie aux vierges." Et c'est ce qu'ils firent.
12 And four hundred virgins, who had not known the bed of a man, were found from Jabesh-Gilead. And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan.	12 Parmi les habitants de Yabesh de Galaad ils trouvèrent 400 jeunes filles vierges, qui n'avaient paspartagé la couche d'un homme, et ils les emmenèrent au camp (à Silo qui est au pays de Canaan).
13 And they sent messengers to the sons of Benjamin, who were at the rock of Rimmon, and they instructed them, so that they would receive them in peace.	13 Toute la communauté envoya alors des émissaires aux Benjaminites qui se trouvaient au Rocher deRimmôn pour leur proposer la paix.
14 And the sons of Benjamin went, at that time, and wives were given to them from the daughters of Jabesh-Gilead. But others were not found, whom they might give in a similar manner.	14 Benjamin revint alors. On leur donna parmi les femmes de Yabesh en Galaad celles qu'on avaitlaissé vivre, mais il n'y en eut pas assez pour tous.
15 And all of Israel was very saddened, and they did penance for destroying one tribe out of Israel.	15 Le peuple fut pris de pitié pour Benjamin, parce que Yahvé avait fait une brèche parmi les tribusd'Israël.
16 And those greater by birth said: “What shall we do with the remainder, those who have not received wives? For all the females of Benjamin have been cut down,	16 "Que ferons-nous pour procurer des femmes à ceux qui restent, disaient les anciens de lacommunauté, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été exterminées?"
17 and we must take great care, and make provision with a very great diligence, so that one tribe may not be wiped away from Israel.	17 Ils ajoutaient: "Comment conserver un reste à Benjamin pour qu'une tribu ne soit pas effacéed'Israël?
18 As for our own daughters, we are not able to give them, being bound by an oath and a curse, when we said, ‘Accursed is he who will give any of his daughters to Benjamin as a wife.’ ”	18 Car, pour nous, nous ne pouvons plus leur donner nos filles en mariage." Les Israélites avaient eneffet prononcé ce serment: "Maudit soit celui qui donnera une femme à Benjamin!"
19 And they took counsel, and they said, “Behold, there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord at Shiloh, which is situated to the north of the city of Bethel, and on the eastern side of the way that one takes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of the town of Lebonah.”	19 "Mais il y a, dirent-ils, la fête de Yahvé qui se célèbre chaque année à Silo." (La ville se trouve aunord de Béthel, à l'orient de la route qui monte de Béthel à Sichem et au sud de Lebona.)
20 And they instructed the sons of Benjamin, and they said: “Go, and hide in the vineyards.	20 Ils recommandèrent donc aux Benjaminites: "Allez vous mettre en embuscade dans les vignes.
21 And when you will have seen daughters of Shiloh being led out to dance, according to custom, go forth suddenly from the vineyards, and let each one seize one wife from among them, and travel into the land of Benjamin.	21 Vous guetterez et, lorsque les filles de Silo sortiront pour danser en choeurs, vous sortirez desvignes, vous enlèverez pour vous chacun une femme parmi les filles de Silo et vous vous en irez au pays deBenjamin.
22 And when their fathers and brothers arrive, and they begin to complain against you and to argue, we will say to them: ‘Take pity on them. For they have not seized them by right of war or conquest. Instead, begging to receive them, you did not give them, and so the sin was on your part.’ ”	22 Si leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent nous chercher querelle, nous leur dirons: Accordez-les nous,car nous n'avons pas pu prendre de femme pour chacun dans le combat; et vous ne pouviez pas les leur donner,car alors vous auriez été coupables.
23 And so the sons of Benjamin did just as they had been ordered. And according to their number, they seized for themselves one wife each, out of those who were led out dancing. And they went into their own possession, and they built up their cities, and they lived in them.	23 Ainsi firent les Benjaminites, et, parmi les danseuses qu'ils avaient enlevées, ils prirent un nombrede femmes égal au leur, puis ils partirent, revinrent dans leur héritage, rebâtirent les villes et s'y établirent.
24 The sons of Israel also returned, according to their tribes and families, to their tents. In those days, there was no king in Israel. Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.	24 Les Israélites se dispersèrent alors pour regagner chacun sa tribu et son clan, et s'en retournèrent delà chacun dans son héritage.
	25 En ce temps-là il n'y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui semblait bon.
