1 The sons of Israel had also taken an oath at Mizpah, and they said, “None of us shall give his daughters as a wife to the sons of Benjamin.”	1 Les Israélites avaient fait ce serment à Mispa: “Personne d’entre nous ne donnera sa fille comme femme à quelqu’un de Benjamin.”
2 And they all went to the house of God at Shiloh. And sitting in his sight until evening, they lifted up their voice, and they began to weep, with a great wailing, saying,	2 Ils se réunirent à Béthel et restèrent devant Dieu jusqu’au soir avec des cris et de grandes lamentations. Ils disaient:
3 “Why, O Lord, God of Israel, has this evil happened among your people, so that this day one tribe would be taken away from us?”	3 “Yahvé, notre Dieu, qu’est-il donc arrivé en Israël! Une tribu est manquante aujourd’hui!
4 Then, rising at first light on the next day, they built an altar. And they offered holocausts and victims of peace offerings there, and they said,	4 Le lendemain le peuple se leva de bon matin; ils construisirent un autel et offrirent des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.”
5 “Who, out of all the tribes of Israel, did not ascend with the army of the Lord?” For they had bound themselves with a great oath, when they were at Mizpah, that whoever was not present would be slain.	5 Puis les Israélites dirent: “Parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, y en a-t-il une qui ne soit pas venue à l’assemblée devant Yahvé?” Car on avait fait un serment solennel: Si quelqu’un ne monte pas à Mispa devant Yahvé, il sera mis à mort.
6 And the sons of Israel, having been led to repentance over their brother Benjamin, began to say: “One tribe has been taken away from Israel.	6 Les Israélites étaient fort affligés pour Benjamin leur frère, ils se disaient: “Aujourd’hui une tribu a été retranchée d’Israël.
7 From where shall they receive wives? For we have all sworn in common that we will not give our daughters to them.”	7 Que pouvons-nous faire pour que ceux d’entre eux qui restent aient des femmes, puisque nous avons juré devant Yahvé de ne pas leur donner nos filles en mariage?”
8 For this reason, they said, “Who is there, out of all the tribes of Israel, that did not ascend to the Lord at Mizpah?” And behold, the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead were found not to have been among that army.	8 C’est alors qu’ils demandèrent: “Y en a-t-il une parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, qui ne soit pas montée vers Yahvé à Mispa?” Ils virent que personne de Yabech en Galaad n’était venu à l’assemblée.
9 (Likewise, in the time when they had been at Shiloh, not one of them was found to be there.)	9 En effet, on avait recensé toute la population et il n’y avait là personne de Yabech en Galaad.
10 And so they sent ten thousand very robust men, and they instructed them, saying, “Go and strike down the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead with the edge of the sword, including their wives and little ones.”	10 La communauté envoya là-bas 12 000 hommes, tous des gens solides, avec cet ordre: “Allez! Vous passerez au fil de l’épée les habitants de Yabech en Galaad ainsi que les femmes et les petits enfants:
11 And this shall be what you ought to do: “Everyone of the male gender, as well as all the women who have known men, shall be put to death. But the virgins you shall reserve.”	11 tout mâle et toute femme qui a eu des relations avec un homme sera voué à l’anathème, mais vous laisserez en vie celles qui sont vierges.” Ils firent ainsi.
12 And four hundred virgins, who had not known the bed of a man, were found from Jabesh-Gilead. And they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan.	12 Ils trouvèrent dans la population de Yabech en Galaad 400 filles qui n’avaient pas eu de relations avec un homme, et ils les ramenèrent au camp établi à Silo, au pays de Canaan.
13 And they sent messengers to the sons of Benjamin, who were at the rock of Rimmon, and they instructed them, so that they would receive them in peace.	13 Alors la communauté envoya prévenir les gens de Benjamin qui étaient au Rocher-de-Rimon et l’on fit la paix.
14 And the sons of Benjamin went, at that time, and wives were given to them from the daughters of Jabesh-Gilead. But others were not found, whom they might give in a similar manner.	14 Les Benjaminites revinrent donc et on leur donna les femmes de Yabech de Galaad qu’on avait laissées en vie. Mais il n’y en avait pas assez pour eux.
15 And all of Israel was very saddened, and they did penance for destroying one tribe out of Israel.	15 De nouveau le peuple fut pris de pitié pour Benjamin, car Yahvé avait fait une brèche parmi les tribus d’Israël.
16 And those greater by birth said: “What shall we do with the remainder, those who have not received wives? For all the females of Benjamin have been cut down,	16 Les anciens de la communauté dirent: “Que pouvons-nous faire pour ceux qui restent, pour qu’ils aient des femmes, puisque les femmes de Benjamin ont été massacrées?”
17 and we must take great care, and make provision with a very great diligence, so that one tribe may not be wiped away from Israel.	17 Ils décidèrent ceci: “Les survivants garderont toute la terre qui appartient à Benjamin, de façon qu’aucune tribu ne soit retranchée d’Israël.
18 As for our own daughters, we are not able to give them, being bound by an oath and a curse, when we said, ‘Accursed is he who will give any of his daughters to Benjamin as a wife.’ ”	18 Cependant nous ne pouvons pas leur donner nos filles en mariage, puisque les Israélites ont fait ce serment: ‘Maudit soit celui qui donnera sa fille à Benjamin.’ ”
19 And they took counsel, and they said, “Behold, there is a yearly solemnity of the Lord at Shiloh, which is situated to the north of the city of Bethel, and on the eastern side of the way that one takes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of the town of Lebonah.”	19 Alors ils pensèrent: “C’est bientôt la fête de Yahvé, celle qui a lieu chaque année à Silo. (Silo est au nord de Béthel, à l’est de la route qui va de Béthel à Sichem et au sud de Lébona)”
20 And they instructed the sons of Benjamin, and they said: “Go, and hide in the vineyards.	20 Et ils firent cette proposition aux Benjaminites: “Allez vous cacher dans les vignes.
21 And when you will have seen daughters of Shiloh being led out to dance, according to custom, go forth suddenly from the vineyards, and let each one seize one wife from among them, and travel into the land of Benjamin.	21 Lorsque vous verrez les filles de Silo sortir pour danser en chœurs, vous sortirez des vignes, vous enlèverez chacun une des filles de Silo et vous regagnerez le pays de Benjamin.
22 And when their fathers and brothers arrive, and they begin to complain against you and to argue, we will say to them: ‘Take pity on them. For they have not seized them by right of war or conquest. Instead, begging to receive them, you did not give them, and so the sin was on your part.’ ”	22 Si jamais leurs pères ou leurs frères viennent se plaindre à nous, nous leur dirons: “Laissez-les donc tranquilles, vous voyez bien que nous n’avons pu prendre une femme pour chacun d’eux au cours de la guerre. Ce n’est pas vous qui les leur avez données, donc vous n’avez pas été infidèles à votre serment.”
23 And so the sons of Benjamin did just as they had been ordered. And according to their number, they seized for themselves one wife each, out of those who were led out dancing. And they went into their own possession, and they built up their cities, and they lived in them.	23 Les Benjaminites firent comme on leur disait pour prendre le nombre de femmes qui correspondait au leur. Ils les enlevèrent parmi celles qui étaient venues danser. Puis ils repartirent et retournèrent sur leurs terres. Là ils rebâtirent les villes et s’y installèrent.
24 The sons of Israel also returned, according to their tribes and families, to their tents. In those days, there was no king in Israel. Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.	24 À ce moment-là les Israélites quittèrent les lieux et s’en allèrent, chacun dans sa tribu et son propre clan, sur leurs propres terres.
	25 En ce temps-là il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël et chacun faisait ce qui lui plaisait.
