CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
James, servant of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes of the dispersion, greetings.1 Santiago, servidor de Dios y del Señor Jesucristo, saluda a las doce tribus de la Dispersión.
My brothers, when you have fallen into various trials, consider everything a joy,2 Hermanos, alégrense profundamente cuando se vean sometidos a cualquier clase de pruebas,
knowing that the proving of your faith exercises patience,3 sabiendo que la fe, al ser probada, produce la paciencia.
and patience brings a work to perfection, so that you may be perfect and whole, deficient in nothing.4 Y la paciencia debe ir acompañada de obras perfectas, a fin de que ustedes lleguen a la perfección y a la madurez, sin que les falte nada.
But if anyone among you is in need of wisdom, let him petition God, who gives abundantly to all without reproach, and it shall be given to him.5 Si a alguno de ustedes le falta sabiduría, que la pida a Dios, y la recibirá, porque él la da a todos generosamente, sin exigir nada en cambio.
But he should ask with faith, doubting nothing. For he who doubts is like a wave on the ocean, which is moved about by the wind and carried away;6 Pero que pida con fe, sin vacilar, porque el que vacila se parece a las olas del mar levantadas y agitadas por el viento.
then a man should not consider that he would receive anything from the Lord.7 El que es así no espere recibir nada del Señor,
For a man who is of two minds is inconstant in all his ways.8 ya que es un hombre interiormente dividido e inconstante en su manera de proceder.
Now a humble brother should glory in his exaltation,9 Que el hermano de condición humilde se gloríe cuando es exaltado,
and a rich one, in his humiliation, for he will pass away like the flower of the grass.10 y el rico se alegre cuando es humillado, porque pasará como una flor del campo:
For the sun has risen with a scorching heat, and has dried the grass, and its flower has fallen off, and the appearance of its beauty has perished. So also will the rich one wither away, according to his paths.11 apenas sale el sol y calienta con fuerza, la hierba se seca, su flor se marchita y desaparece su hermosura. Lo mismo sucederá con el rico en sus empresas.
Blessed is the man who suffers temptation. For when he has been proven, he shall receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.12 Feliz el hombre que soporta la prueba, porque después de haberla superado, recibirá la corona de Vida que el Señor prometió a los que lo aman.
No one should say, when he is tempted, that he was tempted by God. For God does not entice toward evils, and he himself tempts no one.13 Nadie, al ser tentado, diga que Dios lo tienta: Dios no puede ser tentado por el mal, ni tienta a nadie,
Yet truly, each one is tempted by his own desires, having been enticed and drawn away.14 sino que cada uno es tentado por su propia concupiscencia, que lo atrae y lo seduce.
Thereafter, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. Yet truly sin, when it has been consummated, produces death.15 La concupiscencia es madre del pecado, y este, una vez cometido, engendra la muerte.
And so, do not choose to go astray, my most beloved brothers.16 No se engañen, queridos hermanos.
Every excellent gift and every perfect gift is from above, descending from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor any shadow of alteration.17 Todo lo que es bueno y perfecto es un don de lo alto y desciende del Padre de los astros luminosos, en quien no hay cambio ni sombra de declinación.
For by his own will he produced us through the Word of truth, so that we might be a kind of beginning among his creatures.18 El ha querido engendrarnos por su Palabra de verdad, para que seamos como las primicias de su creación.
You know this, my most beloved brothers. So let every man be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to anger.19 Tengan bien presente, hermanos muy queridos, que debemos estar dispuestos a escuchar y ser lentos para hablar y para enojarnos.
For the anger of man does not accomplish the justice of God.20 La ira del hombre nunca realiza la justicia de Dios.
Because of this, having cast away all uncleanness and an abundance of malice, receive with meekness the newly-grafted Word, which is able to save your souls.21 Dejen de lado, entonces, toda impureza y todo resto de maldad, y reciban con docilidad la Palabra sembrada en ustedes, que es capaz de salvarlos.
So be doers of the Word, and not listeners only, deceiving yourselves.22 Pongan en práctica la Palabra y no se contenten sólo con oírla, de manera que se engañen a ustedes mismos.
For if anyone is a listener of the Word, but not also a doer, he is comparable to a man gazing into a mirror upon the face that he was born with;23 El que oye la Palabra y no la practica, se parece a un hombre que se mira en el espejo,
and after considering himself, he went away and promptly forgot what he had seen.24 pero en seguida se va y se olvida de cómo es.
But he who gazes upon the perfect law of liberty, and who remains in it, is not a forgetful hearer, but instead a doer of the work. He shall be blessed in what he does.25 En cambio, el que considera atentamente la Ley perfecta, que nos hace libres, y se aficiona a ella, no como un oyente distraído, sino como un verdadero cumplidor de la Ley, será feliz al practicarla.
But if anyone considers himself to be religious, but he does not restrain his tongue, but instead seduces his own heart: such a one’s religion is vanity.26 Si alguien cree que es un hombre religioso, pero no domina su lengua, se engaña a sí mismo y su religiosidad es vacía.
This is religion, clean and undefiled before God the Father: to visit orphans and widows in their tribulations, and to keep yourself immaculate, apart from this age.27 La religiosidad pura y sin mancha delante de Dios, nuestro Padre, consiste en ocuparse de los huérfanos y de las viudas cuando están necesitados, y en no contaminarse con el mundo.
