Certainly, O Theophilus, I composed the first discourse about everything that Jesus began to do and to teach,1 Primum quidem sermonem feci de omnibus, o Theophile, quae coepit Iesusfacere et docere,
instructing the Apostles, whom he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, even until the day on which he was taken up.2 usque in diem, qua, cum praecepisset apostolis per SpiritumSanctum, quos elegit, assumptus est;
He also presented himself alive to them, after his Passion, appearing to them throughout forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God with many elucidations.3 quibus et praebuit seipsum vivum postpassionem suam in multis argumentis, per dies quadraginta apparens eis etloquens ea, quae sunt de regno Dei.
And dining with them, he instructed them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but that they should wait for the Promise of the Father, “about which you have heard,” he said, “from my own mouth.4 Et convescens praecepit eis abHierosolymis ne discederent, sed exspectarent promissionem Patris: “ Quamaudistis a me,
For John, indeed, baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit, not many days from now.”5 quia Ioannes quidem baptizavit aqua, vos autem baptizabimini inSpiritu Sancto non post multos hos dies ”.
Therefore, those who had assembled together questioned him, saying, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom of Israel?”6 Igitur qui convenerant, interrogabant eum dicentes: “ Domine, si in temporehoc restitues regnum Israeli? ”.
But he said to them: “It is not yours to know the times or the moments, which the Father has set by his own authority.7 Dixit autem eis: “ Non est vestrum nossetempora vel momenta, quae Pater posuit in sua potestate,
But you shall receive the power of the Holy Spirit, passing over you, and you shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth.”8 sed accipietisvirtutem, superveniente Sancto Spiritu in vos, et eritis mihi testes et inIerusalem et in omni Iudaea et Samaria et usque ad ultimum terrae ”.
And when he had said these things, while they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him from their sight.9 Et cum haec dixisset, videntibus illis, elevatus est, et nubes suscepit eum aboculis eorum.
And while they were watching him going up to heaven, behold, two men stood near them in white vestments.10 Cumque intuerentur in caelum, eunte illo, ecce duo viriastiterunt iuxta illos in vestibus albis,
And they said: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall return in just the same way that you have seen him going up to heaven.”11 qui et dixerunt: “ Viri Galilaei, quid statis aspicientes in caelum? Hic Iesus, qui assumptus est a vobis incaelum, sic veniet quemadmodum vidistis eum euntem in caelum ”.
Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mountain, which is called Olivet, which is next to Jerusalem, within a Sabbath day’s journey.12 Tunc reversi sunt in Ierusalem a monte, qui vocatur Oliveti, qui est iuxtaIerusalem sabbati habens iter.
And when they had entered into the cenacle, they ascended to the place where Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude of James, were staying.13 Et cum introissent, in cenaculum ascenderunt, ubi manebant et Petrus et Ioannes et Iacobus et Andreas, Philippus et Thomas,Bartholomaeus et Matthaeus, Iacobus Alphaei et Simon Zelotes et Iudas Iacobi.
All these were persevering with one accord in prayer with the women, and with Mary, the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.14 Hi omnes erant perseverantes unanimiter in oratione cum mulieribus et Mariamatre Iesu et fratribus eius.
In those days, Peter, rising up in the midst of the brothers, said (now the crowd of men altogether was about one hundred and twenty):15 Et in diebus illis exsurgens Petrus in medio fratrum dixit — erat autemturba hominum simul fere centum viginti C:
“Noble brothers, the Scripture must be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit predicted by the mouth of David about Judas, who was the leader of those who apprehended Jesus.16 “ Viri fratres, oportebatimpleri Scripturam, quam praedixit Spiritus Sanctus per os David de Iuda, quifuit dux eorum, qui comprehenderunt Iesum,
He had been numbered among us, and he was chosen by lot for this ministry.17 quia connumeratus erat in nobis etsortitus est sortem ministerii huius.
And this man certainly possessed an estate from the wages of iniquity, and so, having been hanged, he burst open in the middle and all his internal organs poured out.18 Hic quidem possedit agrum de mercedeiniquitatis; et pronus factus crepuit medius, et diffusa sunt omnia visceraeius.
And this became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that this field was called in their language, Akeldama, that is, ‘Field of Blood.’19 Et notum factum est omnibus habitantibus Ierusalem, ita ut appellareturager ille lingua eorum Aceldamach, hoc est ager Sanguinis.
For it has been written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let their dwelling place be desolate and may there be no one who dwells within it,’ and ‘Let another take his episcopate.’20 Scriptum est enimin libro Psalmorum:
“Fiat commoratío eius deserta,
et non sit qui inhabitet in ea”
et: “Episcopatum eius accipiat alius”.
Therefore, it is necessary that, out of these men who have been assembling with us throughout the entire time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,21 Oportet ergo ex his viris, qui nobiscum congregati erant in omni tempore, quointravit et exivit inter nos Dominus Iesus,
beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us, one of these be made a witness with us of his Resurrection.”22 incipiens a baptismate Ioannisusque in diem, qua assumptus est a nobis, testem resurrectionis eius nobiscumfieri unum ex istis ”.
And they appointed two: Joseph, who was called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.23 Et statuerunt duos, Ioseph, qui vocabatur Barsabbas, qui cognominatus estIustus, et Matthiam.
And praying, they said: “May you, O Lord, who knows the heart of everyone, reveal which one of these two you have chosen,24 Et orantes dixerunt: “ Tu, Domine, qui corda nostiomnium, ostende quem elegeris ex his duobus unum
to take a place in this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas prevaricated, so that he might go to his own place.”25 accipere locum ministeriihuius et apostolatus, de quo praevaricatus est Iudas, ut abiret in locum suum”.
And they cast lots concerning them, and the lot fell upon Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven Apostles.26 Et dederunt sortes eis, et cecidit sors super Matthiam, et annumeratusest cum undecim apostolis.
