And responding, Jesus again spoke to them in parables, saying:1 Et respondens Iesus dixit ite rum in parabolis eis dicens:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a man who was king, who celebrated a wedding for his son.2 “ Similefactum est regnum caelorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo.
And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding. But they were not willing to come.3 Et misitservos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire.
Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell the invited: Behold, I have prepared my meal. My bulls and fatlings have been killed, and all is ready. Come to the wedding.’4 Iterum misitalios servos dicens: “Dicite invitatis: Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri meiet altilia occisa, et omnia parata; venite ad nuptias”.
But they ignored this and they went away: one to his country estate, and another to his business.5 Illi autemneglexerunt et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam;
Yet truly, the rest took hold of his servants and, having treated them with contempt, killed them.6 reliqui vero tenuerunt servos eius et contumelia affectos occiderunt.
But when the king heard this, he was angry. And sending out his armies, he destroyed those murderers, and he burned their city.7 Rex autem iratus est et, missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos etcivitatem illorum succendit.
Then he said to his servants: ‘The wedding, indeed, has been prepared. But those who were invited were not worthy.8 Tunc ait servis suis: “Nuptiae quidem parataesunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni;
Therefore, go out to the ways, and call whomever you will find to the wedding.’9 ite ergo ad exitus viarum, etquoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias”.
And his servants, departing into the ways, gathered all those whom they found, bad and good, and the wedding was filled with guests.10 Et egressi servi illi in vias,congregaverunt omnes, quos invenerunt, malos et bonos; et impletae sunt nuptiaediscumbentium.
Then the king entered to see the guests. And he saw a man there who was not clothed in a wedding garment.11 Intravit autem rex, ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibihominem non vestitum veste nuptiali
And he said to him, ‘Friend, how is it that you have entered here without having a wedding garment?’ But he was dumbstruck.12 et ait illi: “Amice, quomodo hucintrasti, non habens vestem nuptialem?”. At ille obmutuit.
Then the king said to the ministers: ‘Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.13 Tunc dixit rexministris: “Ligate pedes eius et manus et mittite eum in tenebras exteriores:ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium”.
For many are called, but few are chosen.’ ”14 Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci veroelecti ”.
Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech.15 Tunc abeuntes pharisaei consilium inierunt, ut caperent eum in sermone.
And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men.16 Etmittunt ei discipulos suos cum herodianis dicentes: “ Magister, scimus quiaverax es et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo; non enimrespicis personam hominum.
Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?”17 Dic ergo nobis quid tibi videatur: Licet censumdare Caesari an non? ”.
But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?18 Cognita autem Iesus nequitia eorum, ait: “ Quidme tentatis, hypocritae?
Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius.19 Ostendite mihi nomisma census ”. At illiobtulerunt ei denarium.
And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?”20 Et ait illis: “ Cuius est imago haec etsuprascriptio? ”.
They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.”21 Dicunt ei: “ Caesaris ”. Tunc ait illis: “ Redditeergo, quae sunt Caesaris, Caesari et, quae sunt Dei, Deo ”.
And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.22 Et audientesmirati sunt et, relicto eo, abierunt.
In that day, the Sadducees, who say there is to be no resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,23 In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducaei, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem,et interrogaverunt eum
saying: “Teacher, Moses said: If anyone will have died, having no son, his brother shall marry his wife, and he shall raise up offspring to his brother.24 dicentes: “ Magister, Moyses dixit, si quis mortuusfuerit non habens filios, ut ducat frater eius uxorem illius et suscitet semenfratri suo.
Now there were seven brothers with us. And the first, having taken a wife, died. And having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother:25 Erant autem apud nos septem fratres: et primus, uxore ducta,defunctus est et non habens semen reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo;
similarly with the second, and the third, even to the seventh.26 similitersecundus et tertius usque ad septimum.
And last of all, the woman also passed away.27 Novissime autem omnium mulier defunctaest.
In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her.”28 In resurrectione ergo cuius erit de septem uxor? Omnes enim habuerunteam ”.
But Jesus responded to them by saying: “You have gone astray by knowing neither the Scriptures, nor the power of God.29 Respondens autem Iesus ait illis: “ Erratis nescientes Scripturasneque virtutem Dei;
For in the resurrection, they shall neither marry, nor be given in marriage. Instead, they shall be like the Angels of God in heaven.30 in resurrectione enim neque nubent neque nubentur, sedsunt sicut angeli in caelo.
But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken by God, saying to you:31 De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis,quod dictum est vobis a Deo dicente:
‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?’ He is not the God of the dead, but of the living.”32 “Ego sum Deus Abraham et Deus Isaac etDeus Iacob”? Non est Deus mortuorum sed viventium ”.
And when the crowds heard this, they wondered at his doctrine.33 Et audientes turbaemirabantur in doctrina eius.
But the Pharisees, hearing that he had caused the Sadducees to be silent, came together as one.34 Pharisaei autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducaeis, conveneruntin unum.
And one of them, a doctor of the law, questioned him, to test him:35 Et interrogavit unus ex eis legis doctor tentans eum:
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”36 “Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in Lege? ”.
Jesus said to him: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God from all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind.’37 Ait autem illi: “ DiligesDominum Deum tuum in toto corde tuo et in tota anima tua et in tota mente tua:
This is the greatest and first commandment.38 hoc est magnum et primum mandatum.
But the second is similar to it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’39 Secundum autem simile est huic: Diligesproximum tuum sicut teipsum.
On these two commandments the entire law depends, and also the prophets.”40 In his duobus mandatis universa Lex pendet etProphetae ”.
Then, when the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them,41 Congregatis autem pharisaeis, interrogavit eos Iesus
saying: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.”42 dicens: “ Quid vobis videtur de Christo? Cuius filius est? ”. Dicunt ei: “David ”.
He said to them: “Then how can David, in the Spirit, call him Lord, saying:43 Ait illis: “ Quomodo ergo David in Spiritu vocat eum Dominumdicens:
‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool?’44 “Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis,
donec ponam inimicos tuos sub pedibus tuis”?
So then, if David calls him Lord, how can he be his son?”45 Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius eius est? ”.
And no one was able to respond to him a word. And neither did anyone dare, from that day forward, to question him.46 Et nemopoterat respondere ei verbum, neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum ampliusinterrogare.
