1 And the people set out from Hazeroth, and they pitched their tents in the desert of Paran.	1 Ekkor szólt ott az Úr Mózeshez:
2 And there, the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:	2 »Küldj férfiakat, hogy vegyék szemügyre Kánaán földjét, amelyet majd Izrael fiainak adok, minden törzsből egyet-egyet, a fejedelmek közül.«
3 “Send men, who may examine the land of Canaan, which I will give to the sons of Israel, one from the rulers of each tribe.”	3 Megtette Mózes, amit az Úr parancsolt, s elküldte Párán pusztából a fejedelmi férfiakat, név szerint:
4 Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending, from the desert of Paran, leading men, whose names are these:	4 Rúben törzséből: Sámuát, Zekur fiát,
5 from the tribe of Ruben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;	5 Simeon törzséből: Safátot, Húri fiát,
6 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;	6 Júda törzséből: Kálebet, Jefóne fiát,
7 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;	7 Isszakár törzséből: Jígalt, József fiát,
8 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;	8 Efraim törzséből: Hóseát, Nún fiát,
9 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hosea the son of Nun;	9 Benjamin törzséből: Fáltit, Ráfu fiát,
10 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;	10 Zebulon törzséből: Geddiélt, Szódi fiát,
11 from the tribe of Zebulon, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;	11 József törzséből: Manassze ágából: Gáddit, Szúszi fiát,
12 from the tribe of Joseph, of the scepter of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;	12 Dán törzséből: Ammielt, Gemálli fiát,
13 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;	13 Áser törzséből: Sztúrt, Mikaél fiát,
14 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;	14 Naftali törzséből: Nahábit, Vápszi fiát,
15 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;	15 Gád törzséből: Gúelt, Máki fiát.
16 from the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.	16 Ez volt azoknak a férfiaknak a neve, akiket Mózes elküldött, hogy vegyék szemügyre a földet. Hóseát, Nún fiát azonban Józsuénak hívta.
17 These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to examine the land. And he called Hosea, the son of Nun, Joshua.	17 Elküldte tehát ezeket Mózes, hogy vegyék szemügyre Kánaán földjét és azt mondta nekik: »Menjetek fel a Délvidéken át, s ha feljuttok a hegyekre,
18 And so, Moses sent them to examine the land of Canaan, and he said to them: “Ascend by the south side. And when you arrive at the mountains,	18 vegyétek szemügyre azt a földet, hogy milyen, meg a népet, amely lakja, hogy erős-e vagy gyenge, hogy számra nézve kevés-e vagy sok,
19 consider the land, as to what kind it may be, and the people, who are its inhabitants, whether they may be strong or weak, whether they may be few in number or many,	19 maga a föld jó-e vagy rossz, milyenek a városok, körülkerítettek-e vagy kerítetlenek,
20 and the land itself, whether it is good or bad, what kind of cities, walled or without walls,	20 a talaj kövér-e vagy sovány, erdős-e vagy fátlan. Legyetek bátrak, s hozzatok nekünk a föld gyümölcseiből.« – Éppen az az idő volt, amikor már enni lehetett a korai szőlőt.
21 the soil, rich or barren, forested or without trees. Be strong, and bring us some of the fruits of the land.” Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes were ready to be eaten.	21 Felmentek tehát, s kikémlelték a földet a Szín-pusztától kezdve egészen Rohóbig, amely Emát felé menet van.
22 And when they had ascended, they explored the land from the desert of Sin, all the way to Rehob, as one enters into Hamath.	22 Felmentek a Délvidékre, s eljutottak Hebronba, ahol Achimán, Sisáj és Talmáj, Enák fiai voltak. – Hebron hét esztendővel előbb épült, mint Tánisz, Egyiptom városa. –
23 And they ascended by the south side. And they arrived at Hebron, where there were Ahiman and Shishai and Talmai, the sons of Anak. For Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis, the city of Egypt.	23 Aztán elmentek a Szőlőfürt völgyéig, s levágtak egy szőlővesszőt a fürtjével együtt, s két férfi egy rúdon elhozta, és vettek a hely gránátalmáiból és fügéiből is,
24 And continuing on as far as the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, they cut off a vine with its grapes, which two men carried on a board. Likewise, they took from the pomegranates and the figs of that place,	24 a helyet pedig elnevezték Nehel-Eskólnak (azaz a Szőlőfürt völgyének), minthogy szőlőfürtöt hoztak onnan Izrael fiai.
25 which was called Nehel Eshcol, that is, the Torrent of the Cluster of Grapes, because the sons of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes from there.	25 Negyven nap múlva aztán, bejárva az egész vidéket, visszatértek a föld kémei,
26 And those exploring the land returned after forty days, having circulated through the entire region.	26 s eljutottak Mózeshez és Áronhoz meg Izrael fiainak egész gyülekezetéhez a Párán-pusztába, amely Kádesnél van. Beszámoltak nekik és az egész közösségnek, megmutatták a föld gyümölcseit
27 And they went to Moses and Aaron, and to the entire assembly of the sons of Israel in the desert of Paran, which is in Kadesh. And speaking to them, and to the entire multitude, they showed them the fruits of the land.	27 és elbeszélték, mondván: »Eljutottunk arra a földre, amelyre küldtél minket, s az csakugyan tejjel-mézzel folyó ország, amint ezekből a gyümölcsökből is látható,
28 And they explained, saying: “We went into the land, to which you sent us, which, it is true, flows with milk and honey, as one can know by these fruits.	28 de igen erős lakói, nagy és fallal körülvett városai vannak: Enák utódait is láttuk ott.
29 But it has very strong occupants, and the cities are great and also walled. We saw the race of Anak there.	29 Amalekiták laknak a Délvidéken, hetiták, jebuziták, amoriták a hegységben és kánaániak laknak a tenger mellett és a Jordán folyó körül.«
30 Amalek lives in the south. The Hethite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite live in the mountains. And truly, the Canaanite stays near the sea and around the streams of the Jordan.”	30 Zúgolódni kezdett erre a nép Mózes ellen, de Káleb csendesítette őket, és azt mondta: »Csak menjünk fel, s foglaljuk el azt a földet, mert el tudjuk foglalni.«
31 During these events, Caleb, to restrain the murmuring of the people who rose up against Moses, said, “Let us ascend and possess the land, for we will be able to obtain it.”	31 Ám a többiek, akik vele voltak, azt mondták: »Semmiképpen sem mehetünk fel e nép ellen, mert erősebb nálunk.«
32 Yet truly, the others, who had been with him, were saying, “By no means are we able to ascend to this people, because they are stronger than we are.”	32 Sőt gyalázták Izrael fiai előtt azt a földet, amelyet megtekintettek, mondván: »A föld, amelyet bejártunk, elemészti lakóit, népe, amelyet láttunk, szálas termetű,
33 And before the sons of Israel they disparaged the land, which they had inspected, saying: “The land, which we viewed, devours its inhabitants. The people, upon whom we gazed, were of lofty stature.	33 láttunk ott jó néhány szörnyet Enák fiaiból, az óriások nemzetségéből, akikhez képest mi olyanoknak látszottunk, mint a sáskák.«
34 There, we saw some monsters among the sons of Anak, of the race of giants; by comparison with them, we seemed like locusts.”
