And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying:1 Por segunda vez fue dirigida la palabra de Yahveh a Jonás en estos términos:
Rise, and go to Nineveh, the great city. And preach in it the preaching that I say to you.2 «Levántate, vete a Nínive, la gran ciudad y proclama el mensaje que yo te diga».
And Jonah rose, and he went to Nineveh in accordance with the word of the Lord. And Nineveh was a great city of three days’ journey.3 Jonás se levantó y fue a Nínive conforme a la palabra de Yahveh. Nínive era una ciudad grandísima, de un recorrido de tres días.
And Jonah began to enter into the city one day’s journey. And he cried out and said, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.”4 Jonás comenzó a adentrarse en la ciudad, e hizo un día de camino proclamando: «Dentro de cuarenta días Nínive será destruida».
And the men of Nineveh believed in God. And they proclaimed a fast, and they put on sackcloth, from the greatest all the way to the least.5 Los ninivitas creyeron en Dios: ordenaron un ayuno y se vistieron de sayal desde el mayor al menor.
And word reached the king of Nineveh. And he rose from his throne, and he threw off his robe from himself and was clothed in sackcloth, and he sat in ashes.6 La palabra llegó hasta el rey de Nínive, que se levantó de su trono, se quitó su manto, se cubrió de sayal y se sentó en la ceniza.
And he cried out and spoke: “In Nineveh, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, let it be said: Men and beasts and oxen and sheep may not taste anything. Neither shall they feed or drink water.7 Luego mandó pregonar y decir en Nínive: «Por mandato del rey y de sus grandes, que hombres y bestias, ganado mayor y menor, no prueben bocado ni pasten ni beban agua.
And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry out to the Lord with strength, and may man be converted from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands.8 Que se cubran de sayal y clamen a Dios con fuerza; que cada uno se convierta de su mala conducta y de la violencia que hay en sus manos.
Who knows if God may turn and forgive, and may turn away from his furious wrath, so that we might not perish?”9 ¡Quién sabe! Quizás vuelva Dios y se arrepienta, se vuelva del ardor de su cólera, y no perezcamos».
And God saw their works, that they had been converted from their evil way. And God took pity on them, concerning the harm that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.10 Vio Dios lo que hacían, cómo se convirtieron de su mala conducta, y se arrepintió Dios del mal que había determinado hacerles, y no lo hizo.
