And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying:1 La parole de Yahvé fut adressée à Jonas une seconde fois:
Rise, and go to Nineveh, the great city. And preach in it the preaching that I say to you.2 “Lève-toi, lui dit-il, pars à Ninive, la grande ville, et lance contre elle les menaces que je te dirai.”
And Jonah rose, and he went to Nineveh in accordance with the word of the Lord. And Nineveh was a great city of three days’ journey.3 Jonas s’en alla donc à Ninive, comme Yahvé le lui disait. Or Ninive était une ville extrêmement grande, on la traversait en trois jours.
And Jonah began to enter into the city one day’s journey. And he cried out and said, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.”4 Jonas entra; il marcha tout un jour, lançant ce message: “Encore quarante jours et Ninive sera détruite!”
And the men of Nineveh believed in God. And they proclaimed a fast, and they put on sackcloth, from the greatest all the way to the least.5 Les gens de Ninive crurent en Dieu; ils proclamèrent un jeûne et s’habillèrent de sacs, depuis le plus grand jusqu’au plus petit.
And word reached the king of Nineveh. And he rose from his throne, and he threw off his robe from himself and was clothed in sackcloth, and he sat in ashes.6 Lorsque la nouvelle parvint au roi de Ninive, lui aussi se leva de son trône et ôta son manteau pour s’habiller d’un sac et s’asseoir sur la cendre.
And he cried out and spoke: “In Nineveh, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, let it be said: Men and beasts and oxen and sheep may not taste anything. Neither shall they feed or drink water.7 Le roi fit publier ceci dans Ninive: “Ordre du roi et des grands! Aucun homme, aucun animal, ni gros, ni petit bétail, ne mangera quoi que ce soit; les animaux ne brouteront pas et ne boiront pas d’eau.
And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry out to the Lord with strength, and may man be converted from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands.8 On s’habillera de sacs, les hommes comme les animaux, on criera vers Dieu de toutes ses forces, chacun renoncera à sa mauvaise conduite et à la violence qu’il commet.
Who knows if God may turn and forgive, and may turn away from his furious wrath, so that we might not perish?”9 Peut-être Dieu changera-t-il d’avis, peut-être se repentira-t-il? Et s’il renonce à sa violente colère, nous serons sauvés.”
And God saw their works, that they had been converted from their evil way. And God took pity on them, concerning the harm that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.10 Dieu vit ce qu’ils faisaient et comment ils renonçaient à leur mauvaise conduite; alors Dieu se repentit du mal qu’il avait parlé de leur faire, il ne le fit pas.
