Daniel 13

1 And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.	1 (In quello tempo) abitava in Babilonia uno il quale si chiamava Ioachim.
2 And he received a wife named Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, who was very beautiful and God-fearing.	2 E costui prese per sua moglie una donna, la quale avea nome Susanna, figliuola d' Elcia; ed era in lei molta bellezza, e questa Susanna era grande amica di Dio.
3 For her parents, because they were righteous, had educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.	3 E il padre e la madre sua, però ch' erano (santi e) giusti, sì l' aveano ammaestrata nella legge di Moisè.
4 But Joakim was very wealthy, and he had an orchard near his house, and the Jews flocked to him, because he was the most honorable of them all.	4 E questo Ioachim si era molto ricco, e (infra l'altre ricchezze) si avea uno giardino, che v' andava a prendere diletto; e molti (nobilissimi uomini dei) Giudei venivano a lui, però ch' era il più onorato che fosse nella terra (secondo la consuetudine di quella contrada).
5 And two elder judges had been appointed among the people that year, about whom the Lord has said, “Iniquity has come out of Babylon, from the elder judges, who seemed to govern the people.”	5 In quello anno sì furono eletti due antichi, quelli doveano fare ragione al popolo (e reggere la giustizia), delli quali il nostro Signore parlò in questo modo: dalli antichi di Babilonia è proceduta la malizia, e specialmente da coloro che dimostrano di reggere il popolo.
6 These frequented the house of Joakim, and all came to them, who had need of judgment.	6 Questi (due antichi la maggior parte del tempo) frequentavano la casa di Ioachim, (e quivi teneano la ragione al popolo) e venivano a loro tutti quelli che dimandavano giustizia.
7 But when the people departed at noontime, Susanna went in and walked around in her husband’s orchard.	7 E quando la gente era partita nell' ora del mezzo dì, Susanna in quel tempo entrava nel giardino.
8 And the elders saw her entering and walking around every day, and they were inflamed with desire towards her.	8 E riguardando più volte questi antichi Susanna, la vedeano entrare e passeggiare; e ciascuno fu innamorato di lei.
9 And they perverted their reason and turned away their eyes, so that they would not look to heaven, nor call to mind just judgments.	9 E gittarono da loro ogni senno e ogni ragione, e di Dio niente si ricordarono, nè delli giusti giudicii.
10 And so they were both wounded by the love of her, yet they did not reveal their grief to one another.	10 Ed erano tutti duoi innamorati di lei; e uno non avea manifestato all' altro lo suo desiderio.
11 For they were ashamed to reveal to each other their desire, wanting to lie with her.	11 E sempre l' uno si guardava dall' altro per la grande vergogna, imaginando lo peccato che voleano fare;
12 And so they watched carefully every day to see her. And one said to the other,	12 sì che ogni di erano solleciti da veder Susanna. E (uno dì era passata l'ora consueta, e) disse l'uno all' altro:
13 “Let us go home, for it is lunch time.” And going out, they departed one from another.	13 Andiamo a desinare, per ciò che l' ora sì è oggi mai. E partironsi uno dall' altro.
14 And returning again, they came to the same place, and, each asking the other the reason, they admitted their desire. And then they agreed to set a time when they would be able to find her alone.	14 E (per ciò che ciascuno di loro si era sollecito per vedere Susanna, incontanente avendo desinato) tornarono al giardino, e l' uno coll' altro si trovarono insieme; e domandandosi insieme qual era la cagione ( ch' erano sì tosto tornati), manifestarono l'uno all' altro l'amore che aveano a Susanna; allora insieme ordinarono lo tempo, quando la potessono trovare sola.
15 But it happened, while they watched for an opportune day, that she entered at a particular time, just as yesterday and the day before, with only two maids, and she wanted to wash in the orchard, because it was so hot.	15 E dopo questo, osservando di trovare uno di atto, intervenne (secondo la sua consuetudine) ella entroe uno die (nello giardino), come solea fare li giorni passati, con due sole damigelle, volendosi lavare nel giardino; però che il caldo era grande.
16 And there was no one there, except the two elders in hiding, and they were studying her.	16 E non era ivi alcuno, salvo quelli due antichi ascosti, i quali la contemplavano.
17 And so she said to the maids, “Bring me oil and ointments, and shut the doors of the orchard, so that I may wash.”	17 Disse dunque alle fanciulle: portatemi l'olio e l'unzione, e serrate le porte del giardino, però ch' io mi voglio lavare, (acciò che persona alcuna non vi entrasse; e questi due antichi si erano nascosi nel giardino, sì che non poteano esser veduti, credendo Susanna esser sola nel giardino con queste due damigelle, e mandandole Susanna per unguenti e per unzioni, per volersi lavare).
18 And they did as she ordered them. And they shut the doors of the orchard and left through a back door to fetch what she required, and they did not know that the elders were hiding within.	18 E loro fecero come li fu comandato; chiusono le porte dell' orto, e uscirono per uno uscio secreto per portare quello era loro comandato; e non sapea Susanna, che questi duoi antichi fussono di dentro ascosti.
19 But when the maids had departed, the two elders arose and hurried to her, and they said,	19 Si tosto come queste due damigelle furono andate (per adempiere lo comandamento di Susanna), questi due antichi ( ch' erano nascosi) sì vennono a Susanna, e si li dissono:
20 “Behold, the doors of the orchard are closed, and no one can see us, and we are in desire for you. Because of these things, consent to us and lie with us.	20 Vedi, (Susanna,) noi t' aviamo amata; (e per grande tempo sì aviamo desiderato d' essere teco); tu sai che le porte dello giardino sono serrate, e noi non siamo veduti da persona; e però ti preghiamo che tu debbia acconsentire alla nostra volontà.
21 But if you will not, we will bear witness against you that a young man was with you and, for this reason, you sent your maids away from you.”	21 E se questo non farai, noi testificheremo contro a te, e diremo che noi t' abbiamo trovata con uno giovane, e perciò tu cacciasti da te le damigelle.
22 Susanna sighed and said, “I am closed in on every side. For if I do this thing, it is death to me; yet if I do not do it, I will not escape your hands.	22 Udendo Susanna così grande falsitade, (sì come costoro le apponeano, gittossi in ginocchioni a Dio, e) disse queste parole: l'angoscie (e le fatiche) m' hanno circondata da ogni parte; però che se io adempio la vostra volontà, conosco che a me è morte eternale; e se io non lo faccio, so bene che delle vostre mani non posso scampare.
23 But it is better for me to fall unavoidably into your hands, than to sin in the sight of the Lord.”	23 Ma io conosco ch' egli è meglio che sanza cagione io caggia nelle mani vostre, che peccare nel conspetto di Dio.
24 And Susanna cried out with a loud voice, but the elders also cried out against her.	24 E allora cominciò Susanna fortemente a gridare; e li antichi medesimamente gridorono forte. contro a Susanna.
25 And one of them hurried to the door of the orchard and opened it.	25 E l'uno di loro corse, e apri le porte del giardino, (e uscì fuori incontinente dallo giardino alli servi, e alla gente ch' erano in casa di Susanna).
26 And so, when the servants of the house heard the outcry in the orchard, they rushed in by the back door to see what was happening.	26 Udendo lo rumore nel giardino, li servi incontinente corsero per la porta secreta, per vedere quello ch' era.
27 But after the old men had spoken, the servants were greatly ashamed, for there had never been anything of this kind said about Susanna. And it happened on the next day,	27 E udendo (queste genti) parlare questi antichi (contro a Susanna), tutti si maravigliarono, perciò che di Susanna già mai non era istato detto alcuno male, (perciò che questi antichi si infamavano Susanna in ciascuna parte). E poi che fu fatta la mattina del seguente di,
28 when the people came to Joakim her husband, that the two appointed elders also came, full of wicked plans against Susanna, in order to put her to death.	28 molta gente andò a Ioachim marito di Susanna, e vennero anche li due antichi, pieni di iniqui pensieri contro a Susanna, acciò che la facessono uccidere.
29 And they said before the people, “Send for Susanna, daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim.” And immediately they sent for her.	29 E dissero dinanzi a tutto il popolo: mandate a Susanna, figliuola d' Elcia, moglie di Ioachim. E feciono venire Susanna (in presenza di tutto il popolo).
30 And she arrived with her parents, and sons, and all her relatives.	30 E venne Susanna, accompagnata da tutti i suoi parenti, figliuoli e amici.
31 Moreover, Susanna was exceedingly delicate and beautiful in appearance.	31 E in verità Susanna era molto bella, delicata e onesta.
32 But those wicked ones commanded that her face should be uncovered, (for she was covered,) so that at least they might be satisfied with her beauty.	32 E questi due antichi sì le feciono discoprire la faccia (acciò ch' ella avesse maggiore vergogna, ovver) per saziarsi della sua bellezza.
33 Therefore, her own and all who knew her wept.	33 E tutto il popolo, vedendola venire così vergognosa, (e tutta la faccia coperta, quasi ogni gente) incominciò a piangere.
34 Yet the two appointed elders, rising up in the midst of the people, set their hands upon her head.	34 E levaronsi questi due antichi nel mezzo del popolo, e puosono le mani in capo a Susanna.
35 And weeping, she gazed up to heaven, for her heart had faith in the Lord.	35 La quale con grande lacrime si levò li occhi in cielo, raccomandandosi a Dio, avendo ferma speranza in lui, (acciò che la liberasse di cotanta. falsitade).
36 And the appointed elders said, “While we were talking a walk in the orchard alone, this one came in with two maids, and she shut the doors of the orchard, and she sent the maids away from her.	36 E questi due antichi (dimostrandola alla gente) sì dissono: andando noi spassandoci per lo giardino soli, costei con due sole damigelle sì entrò nel giardino; e fece serrare le porte del giardino, e mandò via queste due damigelle.
37 And a young man came to her, who was in hiding, and he lay down with her.	37 Incontanente uno giovane, il quale era nascoso nello giardino, si venne a lei, ed ebbe con lei carnalmente a fare.
38 Furthermore, since we were in a corner of the orchard, seeing this wickedness, we ran up to them, and we saw them consorting together.	38 E noi istando in uno canto del giardino, e vedendo tanto male, sì corremmo a loro, e vedessimo loro usare insieme.
39 And, indeed, we were unable to catch him, because he was stronger than us, and opening the doors, he leaped out.	39 E il giovane non potemmo pigliare, però ch' era più forte di noi; e incontanente, aperti gli usci, fuggì, (sì che noi non lo potemmo conoscere).
40 But, since we had apprehended this one, we demanded to know who the young man was, but she was unwilling to tell us. On this matter, we are witnesses.”	40 Pigliammo dunque costei, e domandando chi era il giovane che istava con lei, ed ella non l' ha mai voluto dire; della quale cosa noi siamo testimonii.
41 The multitude believed them, just as if they were elders and the judges of the people, and they condemned her to death.	41 Udendo lo popolo queste cose, grande parte credette, che fosse vero; e allora la condannarono alla morte.
42 But Susanna cried out with a loud voice and said, “Eternal God, who knows what is hidden, who knows all things before they happen,	42 E vedendo Susanna, ch' era sentenziata alla morte, gridando disse queste parole: Signore Iddio eterno, a cui niuna cosa è ascosa, anzi la sai prima ch' ella si faccia,
43 you know that they have borne false witness against me, and behold, I must die, though I have done none of these things, which these men have maliciously invented against me.”	43 tu sai bene che costoro dicono contro a me falso testimonio, e conosci bene che io ingiustamente sono condannata alla morte, conciosia ch' io di queste cose nulla ho fatto, le quali maliziosamente costoro hanno composto contro a me.
44 But the Lord heeded her voice.	44 E (incontinente) fue esaudita la sua orazione.
45 And when she was led away to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy, whose name was Daniel.	45 Ed essendo Susanna menata alla morte, il nostro Signore Iddio (volendo dimostrare la veritade) suscitò lo spirito santo, ch' era in Daniele ancora fanciullo.
46 And he cried out with a loud voice, “I am clean of the blood of this one.”	46 E cominciò Daniele a gridare: (uditemi, imperò ch' ) io sono innocente da questo sangue (cioè da questa morte).
47 And all the people, turning back towards him, said, “What is this word that you are saying?”	47 E udendo il popolo gridare questo fanciullo, istette ferma ogni gente, e domandorolo che voleva egli dire.
48 But he, while standing in the midst of them, said, “Are you so foolish, sons of Israel, that without judging and without knowing what the truth is, you have condemned a daughter of Israel?	48 Ed egli allora rispose: pare a me che voi siete tutti stolti (e molto isciocchi), però che voi non conoscete il vero dal falso, e avete condannata Susanna indegnamente.
49 Return to judgment, because they have spoken false witness against her.”	49 E imperciò tornate al giudicio, chè (quelli maledetti antichi) hanno detto il falso contro a lei.
50 Therefore, the people returned with haste, and the old men said to him, “Come and sit down in our midst and show us, since God has given you the honor of old age.”	50 E incontinente (udito questo) lo popolo si tornarono addietro, e misono a sedere Daniele, e dissono: Iddio t' hae dato conoscimento e senno sopra questa operazione, e imperò ti preghiamo che tu ci dimostri la verità.
51 And Daniel said to them, “Separate these at a distance from one another, and I will judge between them.”	51 E Daniele disse: fate partire quelli (maledetti antichi) l'uno dall' altro, che io li giudicherò.
52 And so, when they were divided, one from the other, he called one of them, and he said to him, “You deep-rooted ancient evil, now your sins have come out, which you have committed before,	52 E partiti che furono l' uno dall' altro, sì fece venire l'uno inanzi da sè, e disseli: invecchiato ne' mali dì, or sono còlti tutti li tuoi peccati che in prima adoperavi,
53 judging unjust judgments, oppressing the innocent, and setting free the guilty, though the Lord declares, ‘The innocent and the just you must not put to death.’	53 giudicando li giudicii ingiusti, condannando li innocenti, e liberando li iniqui,
54 Now then, if you saw her, declare under which tree you saw them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen mastic tree.”	54 Ora se tu vedesti Susanna con quello giovane, dimmi sotto quale arboro la vedesti? Ed egli rispuose sotto uno giunepero.
55 But Daniel said, “Truly, you have lied against your own head. For behold, the angel of God, having received the sentence from him, will split you down the middle.	55 E Daniele gli disse: veramente, che tu hai mentito per la gola; e imperciò pigli l'agnolo di Dio la sentenza, e sì ti fenda per mezzo.
56 And, having put him aside, he commanded the other to approach, and he said to him, “You offspring of Canaan, and not of Judah, beauty has deceived you, and desire has perverted your heart.	56 E cacciato da sè quello, fece venire l' altro, e sì gli disse: vecchio maledetto, che tu somigli al popolo Cananeo, e non a quello di Giuda, (però che) la bellezza di questa donna t'ha ingannato, e il desiderio venereo e lussurioso t'ha sovvertito il cuore tuo.
57 Thus did you do to the daughters of Israel, and they, out of fear, consorted with you, but a daughter of Judah would not tolerate your iniquity.	57 Così facevate alle figliuole d' Israel, e loro, temendovi, vi consentivano a quello che voi volevate; ma quella del popolo di Giuda non volse sostenere la vostra iniquità.
58 Now then, declare to me, under which tree you caught them conversing together.” He said, “Under an evergreen oak tree.”	58 E perciò dimmi: (dove e in qualunque luogo li vedesti) sotto quale arboro erano egli, quando tu gli vedesti peccare? Ed egli rispose: io gli vidi sotto uno pino.
59 And Daniel said to him, “Truly, you also have lied against your own head. For the angel of the Lord waits, holding a sword, to cut you down the middle and put you to death.”	59 E Daniele si li disse: ancora tu (medesimo) hai mentito per la gola; onde per questo l'angelo di Dio pigli il coltello della giustizia, e tagliti per mezzo, e amendue sì uccida.
60 And then the entire assembly cried out in a loud voice, and they blessed God, who saves those who hope in him.	60 E (avendo veduto) tutto il popolo (lo giudicio di Daniele), in una voce gridando disse: benedetto sia Iddio, però che salva coloro che hanno speranza in lui.
61 And they rose up against the two appointed elders, (for Daniel had convicted them, by their own mouth, of bearing false witness,) and they did to them just as they had wickedly done against their neighbor,	61 E [a] quelli due vecchi (antichi), però ch' erano trovati per Daniele in falso testimonio (e voleano fare morire Susanna a torto), feciono (cioè il popolo) così come male operorono contro al prossimo suo,
62 so as to act according to the law of Moses. And they put them to death, and innocent blood was saved on that day.	62 secondo ch' era scritto nella legge di Moisè; cioè che incontanente sì li lapidarono; e lo sangue innocente (per la virtù di Dio e di Daniele) fu liberato (cioè Susanna).
63 But Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter, Susanna, with Joakim, her husband, and all her relatives, because there had been found in her no disgrace.	63 Ed Elcia e la donna sua ringraziarono Iddio. per Susanna figliuola loro (però ch' era stata liberata da tanta rea e pessima falsità); e Ioachim suo marito e tutti li suoi parenti e tutto il popolo laudava Iddio, (che l' avea iscampata da tanto pericolo, e di tanto male, quanto a lei aveano apposto quelli maledetti vecchi), però che non fu trovato in lei cosa brutta.
64 And so Daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day, and thereafter.	64 E Daniele fue sempre mai da tutto il popolo (e da tutte le contrade) avuto in grande riverenza, (per cagione della sentenza che Iddio li avea fatta dare diritta).
65 And king Astyages was laid to rest with his fathers. And Cyrus the Persian received his kingdom.	65 E lo re Astiage andò alli padri suoi (e morì), e Ciro di Persia successe nel regno suo.
