1 “ ‘And now, O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, the soul in anguish and the troubled spirit cry out to you.	1 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, un’anima nell’angoscia, uno spirito tormentato grida verso di te.
2 Listen, O Lord, and be merciful, for you are a merciful God, and so be merciful to us, for we have sinned before you.	2 Ascolta, Signore, abbi pietà, perché abbiamo peccato contro di te.
3 For you are enthroned in eternity, but we will pass away in time.	3 Tu regni per sempre, noi per sempre siamo perduti.
4 O Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, listen now to the prayer of the dead of Israel and of their sons, who have sinned before you and have not listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and have joined themselves to evil.	4 Signore onnipotente, Dio d’Israele, ascolta dunque la supplica dei morti d’Israele, dei figli di coloro che hanno peccato contro di te: essi non hanno ascoltato la voce del Signore, loro Dio, e siamo stati attaccati dai mali.
5 Remember not the iniquities of our fathers, but remember your hand and your name at this time.	5 Non ricordare le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, ma ricòrdati ora della tua potenza e del tuo nome,
6 For you are the Lord our God, and we will praise you, O Lord.	6 poiché tu sei il Signore, nostro Dio, e noi ti loderemo, Signore.
7 And for this reason, you have imparted your fear into our hearts, and also, so that we may call upon your name and may praise you in our captivity, for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers, who sinned before you.	7 Per questo tu hai posto il timore di te nei nostri cuori, perché invocassimo il tuo nome. E ti loderemo nel nostro esilio, perché abbiamo allontanato dal nostro cuore tutta l’ingiustizia dei nostri padri, i quali hanno peccato contro di te.
8 And, behold, we are still in our captivity on this day, where you have scattered us into disgrace, and into slander, and into sin, according to all the iniquities of our fathers, who withdrew from you, O Lord our God.	8 Eccoci ancora oggi nel nostro esilio, dove tu ci hai disperso, oggetto di obbrobrio, di maledizione e di condanna per tutte le ingiustizie dei nostri padri, che si sono ribellati al Signore, nostro Dio».
9 Listen, O Israel, to the commandments of life! Pay attention, so that you may learn prudence!	9 Ascolta, Israele, i comandamenti della vita, porgi l’orecchio per conoscere la prudenza.
10 How is it, O Israel, that you are in the land of your enemies,	10 Perché, Israele? Perché ti trovi in terra nemica e sei diventato vecchio in terra straniera?
11 that you have grown old in a foreign land, that you are defiled with the dead, that you are regarded as among those who are descending into hell?	11 Perché ti sei contaminato con i morti e sei nel numero di quelli che scendono negli inferi?
12 You have forsaken the fountain of wisdom.	12 Tu hai abbandonato la fonte della sapienza!
13 For if you had walked in the way of God, you would certainly have lived in everlasting peace.	13 Se tu avessi camminato nella via di Dio, avresti abitato per sempre nella pace.
14 Learn where prudence is, where virtue is, where understanding is, so that you may know at the same time where long life and prosperity are, where the light of the eyes and peace are.	14 Impara dov’è la prudenza, dov’è la forza, dov’è l’intelligenza, per comprendere anche dov’è la longevità e la vita, dov’è la luce degli occhi e la pace.
15 Who has discovered its place? And who has entered its treasure chamber?	15 Ma chi ha scoperto la sua dimora, chi è penetrato nei suoi tesori?
16 Where are the leaders of the peoples, and those who rule over the beasts that are upon the earth,	16 Dove sono i capi delle nazioni, quelli che dominano le belve che sono sulla terra?
17 who play among the birds of the air,	17 Coloro che si divertono con gli uccelli del cielo, quelli che ammassano argento e oro, in cui hanno posto fiducia gli uomini, e non c’è un limite ai loro possessi?
18 who store up treasures of silver and gold, in which men trust, and with whom there is no end to their acquiring, who work with silver and are anxious about it, and whose works are inexplicable?	18 Coloro che lavorano l’argento e lo cesellano senza rivelare il segreto dei loro lavori?
19 They have been banished and have descended to hell, and others are risen up in their place.	19 Sono scomparsi, sono scesi negli inferi e altri hanno preso il loro posto.
20 The youth have seen the light and have dwelt upon the earth, yet they are ignorant of the way of instruction.	20 Generazioni più giovani hanno visto la luce e hanno abitato sopra la terra, ma non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza,
21 They have neither understood the paths of it, nor have their sons accepted it. It is far from their face.	21 non hanno compreso i suoi sentieri e non si sono occupate di essa; i loro figli si sono allontanati dalla loro via.
22 It has not been heard of in the land of Canaan, nor has it been seen in Teman.	22 Non se n’è sentito parlare in Canaan, non si è vista in Teman.
23 It is likewise with the sons of Hagar, who search for the practicality that is of the earth, the negotiators of Merran and Teman, and the storytellers, and the searchers of discretion and intelligence. Yet the way of wisdom they have not known, nor have they called to mind its paths.	23 I figli di Agar, che cercano la sapienza sulla terra, i mercanti di Merra e di Teman, i narratori di favole, i ricercatori dell’intelligenza non hanno conosciuto la via della sapienza, non si sono ricordati dei suoi sentieri.
24 O Israel, how great is the house of God, and how vast is the place of his possession!	24 O Israele, quanto è grande la casa di Dio, quanto è esteso il luogo del suo dominio!
25 It is great and has no end! It is exalted and immense!	25 È grande e non ha fine, è alto e non ha misura!
26 There were those who were called giants, who existed from the beginning, of great stature, expert in war.	26 Là nacquero i famosi giganti dei tempi antichi, alti di statura, esperti nella guerra;
27 The Lord did not choose them, nor did they discover the way of instruction; for this reason they perished,	27 ma Dio non scelse costoro e non diede loro la via della sapienza:
28 and, because they did not have wisdom, they passed away as a result of their foolishness.	28 perirono perché non ebbero saggezza, perirono per la loro indolenza.
29 Who has gone up into heaven, and taken her, and brought her down from the clouds?	29 Chi è salito al cielo e l’ha presa e l’ha fatta scendere dalle nubi?
30 Who has crossed the sea, and found her, and brought her, chosen instead of gold?	30 Chi ha attraversato il mare e l’ha trovata e l’ha comprata a prezzo d’oro puro?
31 There is no one who is able to know her ways, nor any who can search out her paths.	31 Nessuno conosce la sua via, nessuno prende a cuore il suo sentiero.
32 Yet he who knows the universe is familiar with her, and in his foresight he invented her, he who prepared the earth for time without end, and filled it with cattle and four-footed beasts,	32 Ma colui che sa tutto, la conosce e l’ha scrutata con la sua intelligenza, colui che ha formato la terra per sempre e l’ha riempita di quadrupedi,
33 who sends out the light, and it goes, and who summoned it, and it obeyed him in fear.	33 colui che manda la luce ed essa corre, l’ha chiamata, ed essa gli ha obbedito con tremore.
34 Yet the stars have given light from their posts, and they rejoiced.	34 Le stelle hanno brillato nei loro posti di guardia e hanno gioito;
35 They were called, and so they said, “Here we are,” and they shined with cheerfulness to him who made them.	35 egli le ha chiamate ed hanno risposto: «Eccoci!», e hanno brillato di gioia per colui che le ha create.
36 This is our God, and no other can compare to him.	36 Egli è il nostro Dio, e nessun altro può essere confrontato con lui.
37 He invented the way of all instruction, and delivered it to Jacob his child, and to Israel his beloved.	37 Egli ha scoperto ogni via della sapienza e l’ha data a Giacobbe, suo servo, a Israele, suo amato.
38 After this, he was seen on earth, and he conversed with men.	38 Per questo è apparsa sulla terra e ha vissuto fra gli uomini.
