1 Have they appointed you as a leader? Do not be willing to be extolled. Be among them as one of them.	1 Macht man dich zum Trinkwart, so überhebe dich nicht, benimm dich unter ihnen wie einer ihresgleichen; sorge für sie, und dann erst setze dich.
2 Have concern for them, and in this way sit down with them, and when you have explained all your concerns, sit back.	2 Bist du allen deinen Obliegenheiten nachgekommen, dann laß dich nieder, damit du deine Freude an ihnen hast und als Lohn für dein treffliches Verhalten den Kranz erhältst.
3 Then you may rejoice because of them, and you may receive a crown as an adornment of grace, and so obtain the dignity of the assembly.	3 Rede, du Alter, denn das kommt dir zu, mit gründlicher Sachkenntnis, doch hindere den Gesang (oder die Musik) nicht!
4 Speak, you who are greater by birth. For it is fitting for you	4 Wo es Gesang (oder Musik) zu hören gibt, da trage keine lange Rede vor und bringe deine Weisheit nicht zur Unzeit an.
5 to speak the first word with careful knowledge. But you should not hinder the music.	5 Wie ein Siegelring von Karfunkel an goldener Halskette ist ein kunstgerechtes Konzert beim Weingelage;
6 Where no one is listening, you should not pour out words. And do not choose to be extolled improperly for your wisdom.	6 ein Siegelring von Smaragd in goldener Einfassung ist melodischer Gesang bei lieblichem Wein.
7 A gemstone of garnet is set amid an ornament of gold, and a concert of music is set amid a banquet of wine.	7 Rede, du Jüngling, wenn’s durchaus nötig ist, aber nur, wenn man zwei- oder dreimal dich auffordert (?).
8 Just as a signet of emerald is set amid a work of gold, so is a melody of music set amid delightful and moderate wine.	8 Fasse dich kurz, sage viel mit wenigen Worten; sei wie einer, der’s versteht und doch schweigen kann.
9 Listen silently, and for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.	9 Unter Vornehmen stelle dich ihnen nicht gleich (h) und unter Greisen (g) schwatze nicht viel.
10 Young man, speak in your own case only reluctantly.	10 Wie der Blitz dem Donner vorauseilt, so geht vor dem Bescheidenen die Gunst einher.
11 If you have been asked twice, let your response be concise.	11 Stehe beizeiten auf und halte dich nicht zum Nachtrab; begib dich schnell nach Hause und sei nicht leichtsinnig (?).
12 In many matters, be as if you lack knowledge, and listen silently as well as intently.	12 Dort (d.h. zu Hause) sei vergnügt und führe deine Einfälle aus, doch in der Furcht Gottes und nicht in Unverstand (g);
13 In the midst of great men, you should not be presumptuous. And where the elders are present, you should not speak much.	13 und außerdem preise deinen Schöpfer, der dich mit seinen Gütern überreich labt.
14 Lightning goes before a hailstorm, and grace goes before modesty. And so, for your reverence, good graces will be added to you.	14 Wer den Herrn sucht (g), erhält Belehrung (oder Unterweisung), und die eifrig nach ihm trachten, erlangen sein Wohlgefallen.
15 And at the hour for rising, you should not be lax. Later, be the first to run ahead to your house, and there withdraw, and there take your pastime.	15 Wer das Gesetz erforscht (oder zu erfüllen strebt?), wird mit ihm ganz erfüllt; wer aber heuchelt, kommt an ihm zu Fall.
16 And act according to your intentions, but not in sin and not in arrogant speech.	16 Die den Herrn fürchten, verstehen das Recht und lassen gerechte Aussprüche wie ein Licht leuchten (h).
17 And for all these things, bless the Lord, who made you, and who fills you to overflowing with all his good things.	17 Ein sündiger Mensch lehnt die Belehrung ab und macht eine ihm genehme Auslegung ausfindig (?).
18 Whoever fears the Lord will accept his doctrine. And whoever watches for him diligently will find a blessing.	18 Ein Mann von Einsicht läßt die Ansicht eines Fremden nicht unbeachtet, aber der Hochmütige fügt sich keiner Rücksichtnahme, und nachdem er für sich allein gehandelt hat, ohne sich raten zu lassen, wird er seines Unverstandes überführt.
19 Whoever seeks the law will be filled from the law. But whoever acts with treachery will be scandalized by treachery.	19 Ohne Rat (oder Überlegung?) tue nichts, so wirst du nach der Tat nichts zu bereuen haben.
20 Those who fear the Lord will find just judgment, and they will kindle justice like a light.	20 Gehe nicht auf einem Wege, der Hindernisse darbietet (?), damit du nicht über Steine stolperst (h).
21 A sinful man will shun correction, and he will find a rationalization in accord with his own will.	21 Traue keinem Wege, der frei von Anstoß ist, und so sei auch vor deinen Kindern auf der Hut (h).
22 A man of counsel will not reject understanding. A strange and arrogant man will not be disturbed by fear.	22 Bei allem, was du tust, achte auf deine Seele (oder setze dein Vertrauen auf dich selbst), denn darin besteht die Beobachtung der Gebote (Gottes).
23 Even so, after he has acted out of fear and without counsel, he will be rebuked by his own criticism.	23 Wer sein Vertrauen auf das Gesetz setzt, der bewahrt seine Seele (g), und wer auf den Herrn vertraut, wird nicht zu Schaden kommen.
24 Son, you should do nothing without counsel, and then you will not regret what you have done.
25 You should not go into the way of ruin, and you then will not stumble on stones. You should not commit yourself to a laborious way; otherwise, you may set up a scandal against your own soul.
26 And be cautious concerning your own sons. And be attentive to those of your own household.
27 In all of your works, trust your soul to faith. For this is the keeping of the commandments.
28 Whoever believes God attends to the commandments. And whoever trusts in him will not be diminished.
