1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.	1 Le veglie per arricchire consumano le carni, e le sue ansie tolgono il sonno.
2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.	2 I pensieri dell'avvenire turbano i sensi, e come grave malattia tolgono il sonno.
3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.	3 Il ricco faticò per accumulare ricchezze, e nel suo riposo si sazierà dei suoi beni.
4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.	4 Il povero lavora per mancanza di sostentamento, e alla fine è privo di tutto.
5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.	5 Chi ama l'oro non sarà senza peccato, e chi ama la corruzione ne sarà ripieno.
6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.	6 Molti sono andati in perdizione a causa dell'oro, e la sua bellezza fu la loro rovina.
7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.	7 Legno d'inciampo è l'oro per quelli che a lui sacrificano: guai a coloro che gli van dietro! Ma per lui periranno tutti gli stolti.
8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.	8 Beato il ricco che è trovato senza macchia, che non è andato dietro all'oro, e non ha sperato nel danaro e nei tesori.
9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.	9 Chi è costui e gli daremo lode? Certo ha fatto maraviglie nella sua vita.
10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.	10 Colui che, provato coll'oro, è trovato perfetto avrà gloria eterna: poteva peccare e non peccò, fare del male e non lo fece;
11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.	11 per questo i suoi beni sono resi stabili nel Signore, e le sue elemosine saran celebrate nell'assemblea dei santi.
12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.	12 Se tu siedi a tavola splendida, non essere il primo a spalancar la gola verso di essa.
13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”	13 Non dire: « C'è molta roba sulla tavola! »
14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.	14 Ricordati che è funesto l'occhio cattivo.
15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.	15 Quale cosa tra le create è peggior dell'occhio? Perciò per qualunque cosa inonda la faccia di lacrime, se vede.
16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.	16 Non essere il primo a stendere la mano, chè, contaminato dal l'invidia, tu non abbia ad arrossire.
17 You should not press forward at a feast.	17 Non ti urtare cogli altri nel prender le vivande.
18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.	18 Giudica le cose che riguardano il prossimo da te stesso.
19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.	19 Mangia, come uomo frugale, quello che ti metton davanti, se non vuoi, col mangiar molto, restare antipatico.
20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.	20 Sii il primo a cessare, per buona creanza, ma evita l'eccesso, per non disgustare.
21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.	21 E se siedi in mezzo a molti, non stender la mano prima di loro, e non essere il primo a chieder da bere.
22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.	22 E' piu che sufficiente per un uomo educato un po' di vino; nel dormire non ne avrà disturbi, e non sentirà dolori.
23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.	23 L'insonnia, la colica, gli strazi sono per l'uomo intemperante.
24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.	24 L'uomo parco ha salubre sonno, dorme fino al mattino, e sta bene in sè.
25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.	25 Se tu sei stato forzato a mangiare troppo, alzati da tavola e vomita, e ti sentirai meglio, e non attirerai sul tuo corpo malattie.
26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.	26 Figlio, dammi retta, non mi disprezzare, ed a ultimo troverai (vere) le mie parole.
27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.	27 In ogni tua azione sii diligente, e non incapperai in alcun malore.
28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.	28 Chi è splendido nelle vivande è benedetto dalle labbra di molti e la testimonianza resa alla sua generosità è sicura.
29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.	29 Contro chi è tirchio nel pane mormora la città, e la testimonianza resa alla sua spilorceria è vera.
30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.	30 I bravi nel bere il vino non li provocare, perchè il vino ne ha fatti morire molti.
31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.	31 Il fuoco prova il duro ferro, così il vino bevuto fino all'ubriachezza fa conoscere il cuore dei superbi.
32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.	32 Rende la vita conveniente agli uomini il vino usato con sobrietà: se ne beverai con moderazione, sarai sobrio.
33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?	33 Che vita può avere chi sta senza vino?
34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.	34 Chi priva della vita? La morte.
35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.	35 Il vino fu creato da principio per la gioia, non per l'ubriachezza.
36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.	36 Rallegra l'anima e il cuore il vino bevuto con moderazione.
37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.	37 E' salute per l'anima e pel corpo il bere con sobrietà.
38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.	38 Il molto vino è causa d'irritazioni, d'ira e di molto rovine.
39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.	39 E' amarezza per l'anima il vino bevuto in quantità.
40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.	40 L'animosità dell'ubriachezza è una pietra d'inciampo per lo stolto: fa diminuire le forze ed è causa di ferite.
41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.	41 In un banchetto dove si beve vino non riprendere il prossimo, e non lo disprezzare nella sua allegria.
42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.	42 Non gli dire parole d'ingiuria, e non lo seccare col chiedergli il tuo.
