Sirach 26

1 Blessed is the husband of a good wife. For the number of his years is doubled.	1 - Beato il marito della donna dabbene, perchè sarà raddoppiato il numero de' suoi anni.
2 A good wife delights her husband, and she will fill up the years of his life with peace.	2 La donna forte rallegra suo marito, e gli fa compiere in pace gli anni di sua vita.
3 A good wife is a good portion. She will be given the portion of those who fear God, like a man who has done good deeds.	3 Buon capitale una donna per bene: sarà assegnata a quei che temono il Signore, all'uomo per le sue buone opere.
4 But, rich or poor, with a good heart, his countenance will be cheerful at all times.	4 Del ricco e del povero è contento [allora] il cuore, e lieta in ogni tempo la loro faccia.
5 Of three things, my heart has been afraid, and at a fourth, my face has shown dread:	5 Di tre cose ha timore il cuor mio, e della quarta ha paura la mia faccia:
6 an accusation made by a city, and the gathering of a mob,	6 la mormorazione della città e la radunata del popolo
7 and a deceitful false accusation. All these are more grievous than death.	7 e la falsa calunnia, cose tutte più odiose della morte;
8 A jealous wife is a grief and a mourning to the heart.	8 ambascia di cuore e cordoglio è una donna gelosa,
9 In a jealous wife, there is a scourge of the tongue, which communicates with everyone.	9 [poiché c'è] nella donna gelosa il flagello della lingua che a tutti racconta [i suoi presunti guai].
10 Like a yoke of oxen being provoked, so also is a wicked wife. He who has hold of her is like one who has taken hold of a scorpion.	10 Come un paio di buoi agitati è una donna malvagia: chi l'ha, è come chi piglia uno scorpione.
11 An inebriated wife is a great wrath. And her disgrace and indecency will not be covered.	11 Una donna ubriacone è una gran passione, e la vergogna e l'onta sua non sarà coperta.
12 The fornication of a wife will become known by the haughtiness of her eyes and by her eyelids.	12 L'impudicizia d'una donna dalla sfrontatezza degli occhi e dalle sue palpebre si riconosce.
13 So that her daughter will not also turn away, keep a strict watch; otherwise, having found an opportunity, she may enjoy herself.	13 Sopra una figliuola che non conosce ritrosia rafferma la vigilanza, perchè, trovata l'occasione, non abusi di sè.
14 Be wary of the irreverence of her eyes, and you should not wonder if she might disregard you.	14 Sta in guardia contro ogni imprudenza de' suoi occhi, e non ti meravigliare se non si dà pensiero di te.
15 Like a thirsty traveler, she will open her mouth to the fountain, and she will drink from every water nearby, and she will sit down beside every fencepost, and she will open her quiver to every arrow, until she becomes weary.	15 Come il viandante assetato apre la bocca alla fonte, e beve d'ogni acqua che gli è vicina, [cosi l'impudica] si sederà contro ogni palo, e ad ogni freccia aprirà la faretra finché venga meno,
16 The grace of an attentive wife will delight her husband, and will fatten his bones.	16 La grazia d'una donna operosa allieta il marito, e le ossa ne impingua
17 Her discipline is a gift from God.	17 la sua abilità. Un dono di Dio è
18 Such is an understanding and quiet wife. For there is no substitution for a well-instructed soul.	18 la donna sensata e silenziosa: e non c'è nulla che valga una persona ben educata.
19 A holy and contrite wife is grace upon grace.	19 Grazia su grazia è una donna santa e pudica,
20 And no amount of money is equal to the value of a soul with self-restraint.	20 e non c'è peso che bilanci un'anima casta.
21 Like the sun rising over the world in the high places of God, so the beauty of a good wife is the adornment of her house.	21 Come il sole che si leva per il mondo nell'empireo del Signore, così [rifulge] la bellezza d'una donna ad ornamento della sua [casa].
22 Like a lamp shining atop a holy lampstand, so is the beauty of a face in the mature stage of life.	22 La lucerna risplende sul santo candelabro, e l'avvenenza del volto su salda statura.
23 Like golden pillars upon bases of silver, so are the firm feet of a mature wife upon the soles of her feet.	23 [Come] colonne d'oro su basi d'argento, così posano i piedi sulle piante di solida donna.
24 Like everlasting foundations upon a solid rock, so are the commandments of God in the heart of a holy wife.	24 Eterne son le fondamenta su solida pietra, e i comandamenti di Dio nel cuore d'una santa donna.
25 By two things, my heart is greatly saddened, and at a third, anger overwhelms me:	25 Di due cose s'attrista il mio cuore, e per una terza mi viene sdegno:
26 a man of war failing because of dire need, and an understanding man treated with contempt,	26 il guerriero privo del necessario per miseria, e l'uomo d'ingegno disprezzato,
27 and anyone who crosses over from justice to sin. God has prepared such a one for the spear.	27 e chi dalla giustizia torna al peccato: costui il Signore lo serba alla spada.
28 Two kinds of things have seemed difficult and dangerous to me: a merchant will not be easily freed from his negligence, and a shopkeeper will not be justified by the sins of his lips.	28 Due professioni mi sembrano difficili e pericolose: difficilmente il negoziante si libera da trasgressioni, e l'oste non sarà immune da' peccati di labbra.
