Job 41

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINNEW JERUSALEM
I will not rouse him, as the cruel would do, for who is able to withstand my countenance?1 Any hope you might have would be futile, the mere sight of him would overwhelm you.
Who has given to me beforehand, so that I should repay him? All things that are under heaven are mine.2 When roused, he grows ferocious, who could ever stand up to him?
I will not spare him, nor his powerful words and counterfeit attempts at supplication.3 Who has ever attacked him with impunity? No one beneath al heaven!
Who can reveal the beauty of his garment? And who can enter the middle of his mouth?4 Next I wil talk of his limbs and describe his matchless strength-
Who can open the doors of his face? I gave fear to the circle of his teeth.5 who can undo the front of his tunic or pierce the double armour of his breastplate?
His body is like shields fused together, like dense scales pressed over one another.6 Who dare open the gates of his mouth? Terror reigns round his teeth!
One is joined to another, and not even air can pass between them.7 His back is like rows of shields, sealed with a stone seal,
They adhere to one another, and they hold themselves in place and will not be separated.8 touching each other so close that no breath could pass between,
His sneezing has the brilliance of fire, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.9 sticking to one another making an impervious whole.
Lamps proceed from his mouth, like torches of fire burning brightly.10 His sneezes radiate light, his eyes are like the eyelashes of the dawn.
Smoke passes out of his nostrils, like a pot that is heated and boiling.11 From his mouth come fiery torches, sparks of fire fly out of it.
His breath causes coal to burn, and a flame comes forth from his mouth.12 His nostrils belch smoke like a cauldron boiling on the fire.
Strength dwells in his neck, and destitution goes before his presence.13 His breath could kindle coals, flame issues from his mouth.
The parts of his body work in harmony together. He will send lightning bolts against him, and they will not be carried to another place.14 His strength resides in his neck, violence leaps before him as he goes.
His heart will be as hard as a stone and as dense as a blacksmith’s anvil.15 The strips of his flesh are jointed together, firmly set in and immovable.
When he will be raised up, the angels will be afraid, and, because they are terrified, they will purify themselves.16 His heart is as hard as rock unyielding as the lower mil stone.
When a sword catches up with him, it will not be able to settle in, nor a spear, nor a breastplate.17 When he stands up, the waves take fright and the bil ows of the sea retreat.
For he will consider iron as if it were chaff, and brass as if it were rotten wood.18 Sword may strike but will not stick in him, no more will spear, javelin or lance.
The archer will not cause him to flee; the stones of the sling have been turned into stubble for him.19 Iron means no more to him than straw, nor bronze than rotten wood.
He will treat the hammer as if it were stubble, and he will ridicule those who brandish the spear.20 No arrow can make him flee, a sling-stone tickles him like hay.
The beams of the sun will be under him, and he will dispense gold to them as if it were clay.21 Club seems to him like straw, he laughs at the whirring javelin.
He will make the depths of the sea boil like a pot, and he will set it to bubble just as ointments do.22 He has sharp potsherds underneath, and moves across the slime like a harrow.
A path will shine after him; he will esteem the abyss as if it were weakening with age.23 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron, he makes the sea fume like a scent burner.
There is no power on the earth that is being compared to him, who has been made so that he fears no one.24 Behind him he leaves a glittering wake -- a white fleece seems to float on the deeps.
He sees every prominent thing; he is king over all the sons of arrogance.25 He has no equal on earth, being created without fear.
He looks the haughtiest in the eye; of al the lordly beasts he is king.
