Exodus 1

1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:	1 Voici les noms des Israélites qui entrèrent en Egypte avec Jacob; ils y vinrent chacun avec sa famille:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,	2 Ruben, Siméon, Lévi et Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,	3 Issachar, Zabulon et Benjamin,
4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.	4 Dan et Nephtali, Gad et Asher.
5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.	5 Les descendants de Jacob étaient, en tout, 70 personnes. Joseph, lui, était déjà en Egypte.
6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,	6 Puis Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères et toute cette génération.
7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.	7 Les Israélites furent féconds et se multiplièrent, ils devinrent de plus en plus nombreux et puissants,au point que le pays en fut rempli.
8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.	8 Un nouveau roi vint au pouvoir en Egypte, qui n'avait pas connu Joseph.
9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.	9 Il dit à son peuple: "Voici que le peuple des Israélites est devenu plus nombreux et plus puissant quenous.
10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”	10 Allons, prenons de sages mesures pour l'empêcher de s'accroître, sinon, en cas de guerre, ilgrossirait le nombre de nos adversaires. Il combattrait contre nous pour, ensuite, sortir du pays."
11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.	11 On imposa donc à Israël des chefs de corvée pour lui rendre la vie dure par les travaux qu'ilsexigeraient. C'est ainsi qu'il bâtit pour Pharaon les villes-entrepôts de Pitom et de Ramsès.
12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.	12 Mais plus on lui rendait la vie dure, plus il croissait en nombre et surabondait, ce qui fit redouter lesIsraélites.
13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.	13 Les Egyptiens contraignirent les Israélites au travail
14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.	14 et leur rendirent la vie amère par de durs travaux: préparation de l'argile, moulage des briques,divers travaux des champs, toutes sortes de travaux auxquels ils les contraignirent.
15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)	15 Le roi d'Egypte dit aux accoucheuses des femmes des Hébreux, dont l'une s'appelait Shiphra etl'autre Pua:
16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”	16 "Quand vous accoucherez les femmes des Hébreux, regardez les deux pierres. Si c'est un fils, faites-le mourir, si c'est une fille, laissez-la vivre."
17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.	17 Mais les accoucheuses craignirent Dieu, elles ne firent pas ce que leur avait dit le roi d'Egypte etlaissèrent vivre les garçons.
18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”	18 Le roi d'Egypte les appela et leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous agi de la sorte et laissé vivre lesgarçons?"
19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”	19 Elles répondirent à Pharaon: "Les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme les Egyptiennes, ellessont vigoureuses. Avant que l'accoucheuse n'arrive auprès d'elles, elles se sont délivrées."
20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.	20 Dieu favorisa les accoucheuses; quant au peuple, il devint très nombreux et très puissant.
21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.	21 Comme les accoucheuses avaient craint Dieu, il leur accorda une postérité.
22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”	22 Pharaon donna alors cet ordre à tout son peuple: "Tout fils qui naîtra, jetez-le au Fleuve, maislaissez vivre toute fille."
