1 Meanwhile, the famine pressed heavily on all the land.	1 Ma intanto la fame si faceva sentire crudelmente su tutto il paese,
2 And having consumed the provisions that they had brought out of Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Return and buy us a little food.”	2 ed essendo già finiti i viveri portati dall'Egitto, Giacobbe disse ai suoi figli: « Tornate a comprarci un po' da mangiare.
3 Judah answered: “The man himself declared to us, under the attestation of an oath, saying: ‘You will not see my face, unless you bring your youngest brother with you.’	3 Giuda rispose: « Quell'uomo ce lo dichiarò con giuramento: Non vedrete la mia faccia se non menate con voi il vostro fratello più piccolo.
4 If therefore you are willing to send him with us, we will travel together, and we will buy necessities for you.	4 Se dunque tu vuoi mandarlo con noi, andremo anche noi, e compreremo quanto ti è necessario;
5 But if you are not willing, we will not go. For the man, as we have often said, declared to us, saying: ‘You will not see my face without your youngest brother.’ ”	5 ma se tu non vuoi mandarlo, non andremo, perchè quell'uomo, come abbiamo detto più volte, ci ha detto chiaramente: Non vedrete la mia faccia se il vostro fratello più piccolo non sarà con voi ».
6 Israel said to them, “You have done this for my misery, in that you revealed to him that you also had another brother.”	6 E Israele disse loro: « È per mia sventura che gli avete fatto sapere di avere anche un altro fratello.
7 But they responded: “The man questioned us in order, concerning our family: whether our father lived, if we had a brother. And we answered him respectively, according to what he demanded. How could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother with you?’ ”	7 Ma essi risposero: « Fu lui che ci interrogò per ordine intorno alla nostra stirpe, chiedendo se era vivo il padre, se avevamo un altro fratello; e noi non facemmo che rispondere alle sue domande, e come si poteva andare a pensare che ci avrebbe detto: Conducete con voi il vostro fratello? »
8 Likewise, Judah said to his father: “Send the boy with me, so that we may set out and be able to live, lest we and our little ones should die.	8 Giuda disse ancora a suo padre: « Lascia venir meco il fanciullo, affinchè si possa partire e vivere, e non si abbia a morire noi e i nostri bambini.
9 I accept the boy; require him at my hand. Unless I lead him back and restore him to you, I will be guilty of a sin against you for all time.	9 Mi rendo garante io del fanciullo: domandane conto a me: se io non te lo riconduco e non te lo rendo, sarò per sempre colpevole contro di te.
10 If a delay had not intervened, by now we would have returned here a second time.”	10 Se non ci fossimo indugiati, a quest'ora saremmo già ritornati due volte ».
11 Therefore, their father Israel said to them: “If it is necessary to do so, then do what you will. Take, in your vessels, from the best fruits of the land, and carry down gifts to the man: a little resin, and honey, and storax ointment, oil of myrrh, turpentine, and almonds.	11 Allora Israele, loro padre, disse loro: « Se così è necessario, fate quel che volete: prendete nei vostri vasi dei frutti più squisiti di questo paese e portateli in dono a quell'uomo: un po' di resina e di miele, dello storace, della mirra, del terebinto e delle mandorle.
12 Also, take with you double the money, and carry back what you found in your sacks, lest perhaps it was done in error.	12 Portate con voi anche il doppio del danaro, riportando quello che avete trovato nei sacchi; forse fu un errore.
13 But also take your brother, and go to the man.	13 Prendete pure anche il vostro fratello e andate a trovare quell'uomo.
14 Then may my Almighty God cause him to be pleased by you. And send your brother, whom he holds, back with you, along with this one, Benjamin. But as for me, without my children, I will be like one who is bereaved.”	14 Dio Onnipotente ve lo renda propizio, sicché egli rimandi con voi l'altro vostro fratello che tiene prigioniero e Beniamino; ma io resterò come un uomo privo di figli ».
15 Therefore, the men took the gifts, and double the money, and Benjamin. And they went down into Egypt, and they stood in the presence of Joseph.	15 Essi adunque presero i doni e il doppio del danaro e Beniamino, e discesero in Egitto, e si presentarono a Giuseppe,
16 And when he had seen them and Benjamin together, he instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Lead the men into the house, and kill victims, and prepare a feast, because they will be eating with me at midday.”	16 il quale, avendoli veduti insieme a Beniamino, disse al suo maestro di casa: « Conduci questi uomini in casa: uccidi le vittime e prepara un convito, perchè essi mangeranno con me a mezzogiorno ».
17 He did what he had been ordered to do, and he brought the men into the house.	17 Il maestro di casa eseguì quanto gli era stato imposto, e li condusse in casa,
18 And there, being terrified, they said one to another: “Because of the money, which we carried back the first time in our sacks, we have been brought in, so that he may unleash a false accusation against us, and by violence subjugate both us and our donkeys into servitude.”	18 ove pieni di paura, dissero tra di loro: «Per quel danaro che riportammo nei nostri sacchi, siam condotti qua dentro: egli vuole addossarci questa calunnia per ridurre colla violenza in schiavitù noi ed i nostri asini ».
19 For this reason, approaching the steward of the house at his door,	19 Per questo, accostatisi sulla stessa porta al maestro di casa,
20 they said: “We beg you, lord, to hear us. We came down once before to buy food.	20 gli dissero: « Ti preghiamo, o Signore, di ascoltarci! Noi siam venuti un'altra volta a comprar dei viveri;
21 And having bought it, when we arrived at the inn, we opened our sacks and found the money in the mouths of the sacks, which we now have carried back in the same amount.	21 dopo averli comprati, quando all'albergo aprimmo i nostri sacchi, alla bocca di essi ritrovammo il nostro danaro, che abbiamo riportato nello stesso peso.
22 But we have also brought other silver, so that we may buy those things that are necessary for us. It is not on our conscience who had placed it in our bags.”	22 Oltre all'altro danaro che abbiamo portato per comprare quanto ci bisogna. Noi non sappiamo chi abbia messo quel danaro nei nostri sacchi ».
23 But he responded: “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you the treasure in your sacks. As for the money that you gave to me, I held it as a test.” And he led Simeon out to them.	23 Ma egli rispose: « Datevi pace e non temete: il vostro Dio e il Dio del padre vostro ha posti quei tesori nei vostri sacchi; il vostro danaro è giunto a me in buona moneta ». E liberato Simeone, lo condusse a loro.
24 And having led them into the house, he brought water, and they washed their feet, and he gave fodder to their donkeys.	24 Fattili poi entrare in casa, portò dell'acqua perchè si lavassero i piedi, e diè da mangiare ai loro asini.
25 But they also prepared the gifts, until Joseph entered at midday. For they had heard that they would eat bread there.	25 Essi prepararono i doni per quando Giuseppe sarebbe andato da loro, a mezzogiorno, avendo inteso che dovevano rimaner lì a mangiare.
26 And so Joseph entered his house, and they offered him the gifts, holding them in their hands. And they reverenced prone on the ground.	26 Quando poi Giuseppe entrò in casa sua, essi gli offrirono i doni che tenevano in mano, e adorarono prostrati fino a terra.
27 But he, gently greeting them again, questioned them, saying: “Is your father, the old man about whom you spoke to me, in good health? Is he still alive?”	27 Ma Giuseppe, reso loro berignamente il saluto, disse: « Il vostro padre, il vecchio di cui mi parlaste sta bene? vive ancora? »
28 And they answered: “Your servant, our father, is safe; he is still alive.” And bowing, they reverenced him.	28 Risposero: « Il tuo servo, il padre nostro, sta bene, vive ancora ». E prostrati, lo adorarono.
29 Then Joseph, lifting up his eyes, saw Benjamin, his brother of the same womb, and he said, “Is this your little brother, about whom you spoke to me?” And again, he said, “May God be compassionate to you, my son.”	29 Ma Giuseppe, alzati gli occhi e veduto Beniamino, figliolo della sua madre, disse: « È questo il vostro fratello più piccolo di cui mi parlaste? » E disse a lui: « Dio abbia misericordia di te, figliolo mio! »
30 And he hurried out, because his heart had been moved over his brother, and tears gushed out. And going into his chamber, he wept.	30 E in fretta si ritirò, perchè le sue viscere si erano commosse davanti al suo fratello, e gli cadevan le lacrime. Entrò nella sua camera e pianse.
31 And when he had washed his face, coming out again, he composed himself, and he said, “Set out bread.”	31 Ma poi, lavatasi la faccia, uscì fuori, si fece forza e disse: « Portate da mangiare ».
32 And when it was set out, separately for Joseph, and separately for his brothers, likewise separately for the Egyptians, who ate at the same time, (for it is unlawful for Egyptians to eat with Hebrews, and they consider feasting in this way to be profane)	32 E fu imbandita la mensa, a parte per Giuseppe, a parte pei fratelli e a parte per gli Egiziani che mangiavano con lui, perchè gli Egiziani non stiman lecito mangiare con gli Ebrei e credono profano un tal convito.
33 they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his state of life. And they wondered exceedingly,	33 Essi sedettero alla presenza di Giuseppe, il primogenito secondo il suo diritto di primogenitura, e il più piccolo, secondo la sua età; e restavano oltremodo maravigliati,
34 taking the portions that they received from him. And the greater portion went to Benjamin, so much so that it exceeded five parts. And they drank and became inebriated along with him.	34 ricevendo le porzioni che egli loro mandava. La porzione maggiore, che era cinque volte più grossa, fu per Beniamino. Così bevettero e stettero allegri con lui.
