1 Meanwhile, the famine pressed heavily on all the land.	1 La famine s’était aggravée dans le pays;
2 And having consumed the provisions that they had brought out of Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, “Return and buy us a little food.”	2 quand on eut fini de manger le blé qu’ils avaient ramené d’Égypte, le père leur dit: “Retournez acheter un peu de nourriture pour nous.”
3 Judah answered: “The man himself declared to us, under the attestation of an oath, saying: ‘You will not see my face, unless you bring your youngest brother with you.’	3 Mais Juda lui dit: “L’homme nous l’a dit clairement: Il est inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!
4 If therefore you are willing to send him with us, we will travel together, and we will buy necessities for you.	4 Si tu envoies notre frère avec nous, nous descendrons et nous t’achèterons de la nourriture.
5 But if you are not willing, we will not go. For the man, as we have often said, declared to us, saying: ‘You will not see my face without your youngest brother.’ ”	5 Mais si tu ne l’envoies pas, nous ne descendrons pas, car l’homme nous a bien dit: Inutile de vous présenter devant moi sans votre frère!”
6 Israel said to them, “You have done this for my misery, in that you revealed to him that you also had another brother.”	6 Alors Israël leur dit: “Pourquoi avez-vous dit à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère? Vous avez fait mon malheur.”
7 But they responded: “The man questioned us in order, concerning our family: whether our father lived, if we had a brother. And we answered him respectively, according to what he demanded. How could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother with you?’ ”	7 Ils répondirent: “L’homme nous a tellement questionné sur nous, sur notre famille! Il nous a dit: Est-ce que votre père est encore vivant? Avez-vous un frère? Alors nous avons répondu à ses questions et nous l’avons renseigné. Pouvions-nous deviner qu’il nous dirait: Amenez-moi votre frère?”
8 Likewise, Judah said to his father: “Send the boy with me, so that we may set out and be able to live, lest we and our little ones should die.	8 Juda dit alors à son père Israël: “Envoie le jeune homme avec moi, que nous puissions prendre le départ: c’est une question de vie ou de mort pour toi et pour nos petits enfants.
9 I accept the boy; require him at my hand. Unless I lead him back and restore him to you, I will be guilty of a sin against you for all time.	9 Je répondrai pour lui, c’est à moi que tu demanderas compte de lui. Si je ne te le ramène pas, si je ne te le rends pas, je serai coupable à jamais devant toi.
10 If a delay had not intervened, by now we would have returned here a second time.”	10 Mais si nous n’avions pas tant tardé, nous serions déjà revenus deux fois.”
11 Therefore, their father Israel said to them: “If it is necessary to do so, then do what you will. Take, in your vessels, from the best fruits of the land, and carry down gifts to the man: a little resin, and honey, and storax ointment, oil of myrrh, turpentine, and almonds.	11 Leur père Israël leur dit: “S’il en est ainsi, faites donc ce que je vous dis. Prenez dans vos sacs des produits du pays, et emportez-les pour faire un cadeau à cet homme: un peu de résine pour le brûle-parfum, un peu de miel, de la gomme parfumée, des pistaches et des amandes.
12 Also, take with you double the money, and carry back what you found in your sacks, lest perhaps it was done in error.	12 Puis emportez le double d’argent, ainsi vous rendrez l’argent qu’on a remis dans vos sacs: peut-être est-ce une erreur.
13 But also take your brother, and go to the man.	13 Prenez donc votre frère, et allez retrouver cet homme.
14 Then may my Almighty God cause him to be pleased by you. And send your brother, whom he holds, back with you, along with this one, Benjamin. But as for me, without my children, I will be like one who is bereaved.”	14 Que le Dieu de la Steppe vous accorde de trouver grâce à ses yeux, pour qu’il vous laisse repartir avec votre frère et avec Benjamin. Quant à moi, si je dois être privé de mes enfants, que j’en sois privé!”
15 Therefore, the men took the gifts, and double the money, and Benjamin. And they went down into Egypt, and they stood in the presence of Joseph.	15 Les hommes chargèrent donc ces cadeaux et prirent le double d’argent, ils emmenèrent aussi Benjamin. Ils descendirent en Égypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph.
16 And when he had seen them and Benjamin together, he instructed the steward of his house, saying: “Lead the men into the house, and kill victims, and prepare a feast, because they will be eating with me at midday.”	16 Lorsque Joseph vit que Benjamin était avec eux, il dit à son intendant: “Fais entrer ces hommes chez moi, fais tuer une bête et préparer la viande, car ces hommes mangeront avec moi à midi.”
17 He did what he had been ordered to do, and he brought the men into the house.	17 L’intendant fit ce que Joseph avait commandé; il conduisit les hommes dans la maison de Joseph.
18 And there, being terrified, they said one to another: “Because of the money, which we carried back the first time in our sacks, we have been brought in, so that he may unleash a false accusation against us, and by violence subjugate both us and our donkeys into servitude.”	18 Quand on les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph, les hommes eurent peur. Ils se disaient: “C’est à cause de l’argent qu’on a remis dans nos sacs la fois précédente, qu’ils nous font entrer. Ils vont se jeter sur nous tout-à-coup et ils nous prendront comme esclaves avec nos ânes!”
19 For this reason, approaching the steward of the house at his door,	19 Aussi, dès leur arrivée à la maison, ils se dirigèrent vers l’intendant de Joseph. Ils lui dirent:
20 they said: “We beg you, lord, to hear us. We came down once before to buy food.	20 “De grâce, mon seigneur, nous sommes déjà venus il y a quelque temps pour acheter de la nourriture.
21 And having bought it, when we arrived at the inn, we opened our sacks and found the money in the mouths of the sacks, which we now have carried back in the same amount.	21 Il s’est trouvé qu’à la halte du soir, lorsque nous avons ouvert nos sacs, l’argent de chacun d’entre nous, avec le compte exact, était à l’entrée de son sac. Aussi l’avons-nous rapporté.
22 But we have also brought other silver, so that we may buy those things that are necessary for us. It is not on our conscience who had placed it in our bags.”	22 Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs, mais nous avons pris une nouvelle somme d’argent pour acheter de la nourriture.”
23 But he responded: “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you the treasure in your sacks. As for the money that you gave to me, I held it as a test.” And he led Simeon out to them.	23 Il leur répondit: “Soyez en paix, soyez sans crainte: votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père a mis pour vous un trésor dans vos sacs, car votre argent m’était bien parvenu.” Puis il fit délier Siméon devant eux.
24 And having led them into the house, he brought water, and they washed their feet, and he gave fodder to their donkeys.	24 L’homme fit entrer les frères dans la maison de Joseph. Il leur donna de l’eau et ils se lavèrent les pieds. On donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes.
25 But they also prepared the gifts, until Joseph entered at midday. For they had heard that they would eat bread there.	25 Alors ils préparèrent leur cadeau en attendant l’arrivée de Joseph, car on leur avait dit qu’ils prendraient là leur repas de midi.
26 And so Joseph entered his house, and they offered him the gifts, holding them in their hands. And they reverenced prone on the ground.	26 Quand Joseph rentra à la maison, ils lui offrirent le cadeau qu’ils avaient dans les mains, puis ils se prosternèrent jusqu’à terre devant lui.
27 But he, gently greeting them again, questioned them, saying: “Is your father, the old man about whom you spoke to me, in good health? Is he still alive?”	27 Il leur demanda comment ils allaient: “Votre père, dit-il, ce vieillard dont vous m’avez parlé, est-il en bonne santé? Est-il toujours en vie?”
28 And they answered: “Your servant, our father, is safe; he is still alive.” And bowing, they reverenced him.	28 Ils lui répondirent: “Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé, il est encore vivant.” Puis ils s’agenouillèrent et se prosternèrent.
29 Then Joseph, lifting up his eyes, saw Benjamin, his brother of the same womb, and he said, “Is this your little brother, about whom you spoke to me?” And again, he said, “May God be compassionate to you, my son.”	29 Joseph leva les yeux et vit son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère: “Est-ce bien là votre plus jeune frère dont vous m’avez parlé?” Se tournant vers lui, il lui dit: “Que Dieu te bénisse, mon fils!”
30 And he hurried out, because his heart had been moved over his brother, and tears gushed out. And going into his chamber, he wept.	30 Alors, soudain, Joseph eut envie de pleurer car il était bouleversé à la vue de son frère. Il entra donc dans ses appartements et pleura.
31 And when he had washed his face, coming out again, he composed himself, and he said, “Set out bread.”	31 Puis il se lava le visage et sortit. Il se reprit et dit: “Servez le repas!”
32 And when it was set out, separately for Joseph, and separately for his brothers, likewise separately for the Egyptians, who ate at the same time, (for it is unlawful for Egyptians to eat with Hebrews, and they consider feasting in this way to be profane)	32 On servit Joseph à part, on servit à part ses frères, à part encore les Égyptiens invités; car les Égyptiens ne peuvent pas prendre un repas avec des Hébreux: ce serait une honte pour l’Égypte.
33 they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his state of life. And they wondered exceedingly,	33 Ils s’assirent donc en face de lui, chacun selon son rang, de l’aîné jusqu’au plus jeune. Ils se regardaient l’un l’autre, stupéfaits.
34 taking the portions that they received from him. And the greater portion went to Benjamin, so much so that it exceeded five parts. And they drank and became inebriated along with him.	34 Alors Joseph prit dans les plats qui étaient devant lui des portions pour chacun d’eux, mais la portion de Benjamin était cinq fois plus grande que la portion des autres. Avec lui ils burent du vin au point d’être plutôt gais.
