NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
My brothers, do not let class distinction enter into your faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord.1 Αδελφοι μου, μη εχετε με προσωποληψιας την πιστιν του δεδοξασμενου Κυριου ημων Ιησου Χριστου.
Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, well-dressed and with a gold ring on, and at thesame time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes,2 Διοτι εαν εισελθη εις την συναγωγην σας ανθρωπος εχων χρυσουν δακτυλιδιον με λαμπρον ενδυμα, εισελθη δε και πτωχος με ρυπαρον ενδυμα,
and you take notice of the wel -dressed man, and say, 'Come this way to the best seats'; then you tellthe poor man, 'Stand over there' or 'You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest.'3 και επιβλεψητε εις τον φορουντα το ενδυμα το λαμπρον και ειπητε προς αυτον, Συ καθου εδω καλως, και προς τον πτωχον ειπητε, Συ στεκε εκει? καθου εδω υπο το υποποδιον μου,
In making this distinction among yourselves have you not used a corrupt standard?4 δεν εκαμετε αρα διακρισιν εν εαυτοις και εγεινετε κριται πονηρα διαλογιζομενοι;
Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who were poor according to the world that God chose, to be richin faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him.5 Ακουσατε, αδελφοι μου αγαπητοι, δεν εξελεξεν ο Θεος τους πτωχους του κοσμου τουτου πλουσιους εν πιστει και κληρονομους της βασιλειας, την οποιαν υπεσχεθη προς τους αγαπωντας αυτον;
You, on the other hand, have dishonoured the poor. Is it not the rich who lord it over you?6 Σεις ομως ητιμασατε τον πτωχον. Δεν σας καταδυναστευουσιν οι πλουσιοι και αυτοι σας συρουσιν εις κριτηρια;
Are not they the ones who drag you into court, who insult the honourable name which has beenpronounced over you?7 Αυτοι δεν βλασφημουσι το καλον ονομα, με το οποιον ονομαζεσθε;
Well, the right thing to do is to keep the supreme Law of scripture: you will love your neighbour asyourself;8 Εαν μεν εκτελητε τον νομον τον βασιλικον κατα την γραφην, Θελεις αγαπα τον πλησιον σου ως σεαυτον, καλως ποιειτε?
but as soon as you make class distinctions, you are committing sin and under condemnation forbreaking the Law.9 εαν ομως προσωποληπτητε, καμνετε αμαρτιαν και ελεγχεσθε υπο του νομου ως παραβαται.
You see, anyone who keeps the whole of the Law but trips up on a single point, is stil guilty ofbreaking it al .10 Διοτι οστις φυλαξη ολον τον νομον και πταιση εις εν, εγεινεν ενοχος παντων.
He who said, 'You must not commit adultery' said also, 'You must not kil .' Now if you commit murder,you need not commit adultery as wel to become a breaker of the Law.11 Επειδη ο ειπων, Μη μοιχευσης, ειπε και, Μη φονευσης? αλλ' εαν δεν μοιχευσης, φονευσης δε, εγεινες παραβατης του νομου.
Talk and behave like people who are going to be judged by the law of freedom.12 Ουτω λαλειτε και ουτω πραττετε, ως μελλοντες να κριθητε δια του νομου της ελευθεριας?
Whoever acts without mercy wil be judged without mercy but mercy can afford to laugh at judgement.13 διοτι η κρισις θελει εισθαι ανιλεως εις τον οστις δεν εκαμεν ελεος? και το ελεος καυχαται κατα της κρισεως.
How does it help, my brothers, when someone who has never done a single good act claims to havefaith? Wil that faith bring salvation?14 Τι το οφελος, αδελφοι μου, εαν λεγη τις οτι εχει πιστιν, και εργα δεν εχη; μηπως η πιστις δυναται να σωση αυτον;
If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on,15 Εαν δε αδελφος η αδελφη γυμνοι υπαρχωσι και στερωνται της καθημερινης τροφης,
and one of you says to them, 'I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty,' without giving themthese bare necessities of life, then what good is that?16 και ειπη τις εξ υμων προς αυτους, Υπαγετε εν ειρηνη, θερμαινεσθε και χορταζεσθε, και δεν δωσητε εις αυτους τα αναγκαια του σωματος, τι το οφελος;
In the same way faith, if good deeds do not go with it, is quite dead.17 Ουτω και η πιστις, εαν δεν εχη εργα, νεκρα ειναι καθ' εαυτην.
But someone may say: So you have faith and I have good deeds? Show me this faith of yours withoutdeeds, then! It is by my deeds that I will show you my faith.18 Αλλα θελει τις ειπει? Συ εχεις πιστιν, και εγω εχω εργα? δειξον μοι την πιστιν σου εκ των εργων σου, και εγω θελω σοι δειξει εκ των εργων μου την πιστιν μου.
You believe in the one God -- that is creditable enough, but even the demons have the same belief,and they tremble with fear.19 Συ πιστευεις οτι ο Θεος ειναι εις? καλως ποιεις? και τα δαιμονια πιστευουσι και φριττουσι.
Fool! Would you not like to know that faith without deeds is useless?20 Θελεις ομως να γνωρισης, ω ανθρωπε ματαιε, οτι η πιστις χωρις των εργων ειναι νεκρα;
Was not Abraham our father justified by his deed, because he offered his son Isaac on the altar?21 Αβρααμ ο πατηρ ημων δεν εδικαιωθη εξ εργων, οτε προσεφερεν Ισαακ τον υιον αυτου επι το θυσιαστηριον;
So you can see that his faith was working together with his deeds; his faith became perfect by what hedid.22 Βλεπεις οτι η πιστις συνηργει εις τα εργα αυτου, και εκ των εργων η πιστις ετελειωθη,
In this way the scripture was fulfil ed: Abraham put his faith in God, and this was considered asmaking him upright; and he received the name 'friend of God'.23 και επληρωθη η γραφη η λεγουσα? Επιστευσε δε Αβρααμ εις τον Θεον, και ελογισθη εις αυτον εις δικαιοσυνην, και φιλος Θεου ωνομασθη.
You see now that it is by deeds, and not only by believing, that someone is justified.24 Βλεπετε λοιπον οτι εξ εργων δικαιουται ο ανθρωπος και ουχι εκ πιστεως μονον.
There is another example of the same kind: Rahab the prostitute, was she not justified by her deedsbecause she welcomed the messengers and showed them a different way to leave?25 Ομοιως δε και Ρααβ η πορνη δεν εδικαιωθη εξ εργων, οτε υπεδεχθη τους απεσταλμενους και εξεβαλεν αυτους δι' αλλης οδου;
As a body without a spirit is dead, so is faith without deeds.26 Διοτι καθως το σωμα χωρις πνευματος ειναι νεκρον, ουτω και η πιστις χωρις των εργων ειναι νεκρα.
