Romans 4

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Then what do we say about Abraham, the ancestor from whom we are descended physical y?	1 ¿Y qué diremos de Abraham, nuestro padre según la carne?
2 If Abraham had been justified because of what he had done, then he would have had something toboast about. But not before God:	2 Si él hubiera sido justificado por las obras tendría de qué gloriarse, pero no delante de Dios.
3 does not scripture say: Abraham put his faith in God and this was reckoned to him as uprightness?	3 Porque, ¿qué dice la Escritura?: Abraham creyó en Dios y esto le fue tenido en cuenta para su justificación.
4 Now, when someone works, the wages for this are not considered as a favour but as due;	4 Ahora bien, al que trabaja no se le da el salario como un regalo, sino como algo que se le debe.
5 however, when someone, without working, puts faith in the one who justifies the godless, it is this faiththat is reckoned as uprightness.	5 Pero al que no hace nada, sino que cree en aquel que justifica al impío, se le tiene en cuenta la fe para su justificación.
6 David, too, says the same: he cal s someone blessed if God attributes uprightness to that person,apart from any action undertaken:	6 Por eso David proclama la felicidad de aquel a quien Dios confiere la justicia sin las obras, diciendo:
7 How blessed are those whose offence is forgiven, whose sin is blotted out.	7 "Felices aquellos a quienes fueron perdonadas sus faltas y cuyos pecados han sido cubiertos.
8 How blessed are those to whom the Lord imputes no guilt.	8 Feliz el hombre a quien Dios no le tiene en cuenta su pecado".
9 Is this blessing only for the circumcised, or is it said of the uncircumcised as wel ? Wel , we said ofAbraham that his faith was reckoned to him as uprightness.	9 Pero esta felicidad, ¿es únicamente para los que han sido circuncidados, o también para los que no lo han sido? Consideremos lo que ya dijimos: A Abraham le fue tenida en cuenta la fe para su justificación.
10 Now how did this come about? When he was already circumcised, or before he had beencircumcised? Not when he had been circumcised, but while he was still uncircumcised;	10 ¿Cuando le fue tenida en cuenta? ¿Antes o después de la circuncisión? Evidentemente antes y no después.
11 and circumcision was given to him later, as a sign and a guarantee that the faith which he had whilestill uncircumcised was reckoned to him as uprightness. In this way, Abraham was to be the ancestor of albelievers who are uncircumcised, so that they might be reckoned as upright;	11 Y él recibió el signo de la circuncisión, como sello de la justicia que alcanzó por medio de la fe, antes de ser circuncidado. Así llegó a ser padre de aquellos que, a pesar de no estar circuncidados, tienen la fe que les es tenida en cuenta para su justificación.
12 as well as the ancestor of those of the circumcision who not only have their circumcision but who alsofol ow our ancestor Abraham along the path of faith that he trod before he was circumcised.	12 Y es también padre de los que se circuncidan pero no se contentan con esto, sino que siguen el mismo camino de la fe que tuvo nuestro padre Abraham, antes de ser circuncidado.
13 For the promise to Abraham and his descendants that he should inherit the world was not through theLaw, but through the uprightness of faith.	13 En efecto, la promesa de recibir el mundo en herencia, hecha a Abraham y a su posteridad, no le fue concedida en virtud de la Ley, sino por la justicia que procede de la fe.
14 For if it is those who live by the Law who wil gain the inheritance, faith is worthless and the promise iswithout force;	14 Porque si la herencia pertenece a los que están bajo la Ley, la fe no tiene objeto y la promesa carece de valor,
15 for the Law produces nothing but God's retribution, and it is only where there is no Law that it ispossible to live without breaking the Law.	15 ya que la Ley provoca la ira y donde no hay Ley tampoco hay transgresión.
16 That is why the promise is to faith, so that it comes as a free gift and is secure for al thedescendants, not only those who rely on the Law but al those others who rely on the faith of Abraham, theancestor of us all	16 Por eso, la herencia se obtiene por medio de la fe, a fin de que esa herencia sea gratuita y la promesa quede asegurada para todos los descendientes de Abraham, no sólo los que lo son por la Ley, sino también los que lo son por la fe. Porque él es nuestro padre común
17 (as scripture says: I have made you the father of many nations). Abraham is our father in the eyes ofGod, in whom he put his faith, and who brings the dead to life and cal s into existence what does not yet exist.	17 como dice la Escritura: ""Te he constituido padre de muchas naciones". Abraham es nuestro padre a los ojos de aquel en quien creyó: el Dios que da vida a los muertos y llama a la existencia a las cosas que no existen.
18 Though there seemed no hope, he hoped and believed that he was to become father of many nationsin fulfilment of the promise: Just so wil your descendants be.	18 Esperando contra toda esperanza, Abraham creyó y llegó a ser padre de muchas naciones, como se le había anunciado: Así será tu descendencia.
19 Even the thought that his body was as good as dead -- he was about a hundred years old -- and thatSarah's womb was dead too did not shake his faith.	19 Su fe no flaqueó, al considerar que su cuerpo estaba como muerto –era casi centenario– y que también lo estaba el seno de Sara.
20 Counting on the promise of God, he did not doubt or disbelieve, but drew strength from faith and gaveglory to God,	20 El no dudó de la promesa de Dios, por falta de fe, sino al contrario, fortalecido por esa fe, glorificó a Dios,
21 ful y convinced that whatever God promised he has the power to perform.	21 plenamente convencido de que Dios tiene poder para cumplir lo que promete.
22 This is the faith that was reckoned to him as uprightness.	22 Por eso, la fe le fue tenida en cuenta para su justificación.
23 And the word 'reckoned' in scripture applies not only to him;	23 Pero cuando dice la Escritura: "Dios tuvo en cuenta su fe", no se refiere únicamente a Abraham, sino también a nosotros,
24 it is there for our sake too -- our faith, too, wil be 'reckoned'	24 que tenemos fe en aquel que resucitó a nuestro Señor Jesús,
25 because we believe in him who raised from the dead our Lord Jesus who was handed over to deathfor our sins and raised to life for our justification.	25 el cual fue entregado por nuestros pecados y resucitado para nuestra justificación.
