Sirach 5

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Do not put your confidence in your money or say, 'With this I am self-sufficient.'	1 En tus riquezas no te apoyes ni digas: «Tengo bastante con ellas».
2 Do not be led by your appetites and energy to follow the passions of your heart.	2 No te dejes arrastrar por tu deseo y tu fuerza para seguir la pasión de tu corazón.
3 And do not say, 'Who has authority over me?' for the Lord will certainly give you your deserts.	3 No digas: «¿Quién me domina a mí?», porque el Señor cierto que te castigará.
4 Do not say, 'I have sinned, but what harm has befal en me?' for the Lord's forbearance is long.	4 No digas: «Pequé, y ¿qué me ha pasado?», porque el Señor es paciente.
5 Do not be so sure of forgiveness that you add sin to sin.	5 Del perdón no te sientas tan seguro que acumules pecado tras pecado.
6 And do not say, 'His compassion is great, he will forgive me my many sins'; for with him are both mercyand retribution, and his anger does not pass from sinners.	6 No digas: «Su compasión es grande, él me perdonará la multitud de mis pecados». Porque en él hay misericordia, pero también hay cólera, y en los pecadores se desahoga su furor.
7 Do not delay your return to the Lord, do not put it off day after day; for suddenly the Lord's wrath wilblaze out, and on the day of punishment you wil be utterly destroyed.	7 No te tardes en volver al Señor, no lo difieras de un día para otro, pues de pronto salta la ira del Señor, y perecerás al tiempo del castigo.
8 Do not set your heart on il -gotten gains, they wil be of no use to you on the day of disaster.	8 No te apoyes en riquezas injustas, que de nada te servirán el día de la adversidad.
9 Do not winnow in every wind, or walk along every by-way (as the double-talking sinner does).	9 No avientes a cualquier viento, ni vayas por cualquier senda, (así hace el pecador de lengua doble).
10 Be steady in your convictions, and be a person of your word.	10 Manténte firme en tu pensamiento, y sea una tu palabra.
11 Be quick to listen, and deliberate in giving an answer.	11 Sé pronto en escuchar, y tardo en responder.
12 If you understand the matter, give your neighbour an answer, if not, keep your hand over your mouth.	12 Si sabes alguna cosa, a tu prójimo responde, si no, pon tu mano en la boca.
13 Both honour and disgrace come from talking, the tongue is its owner's downfal .	13 Gloria y deshonra caben en el hablar, y en la lengua del hombre está su ruina.
14 Do not get a name for scandal-mongering, do not set traps with your tongue; for as shame lies in storefor the thief, so harsh condemnation awaits the deceitful.	14 Que no se te llame maldiciente, no pongas lazos con tu lengua, que sobre el ladrón cae la vergüenza, y dura condenación sobre la lengua doble.
15 Avoid offences in great as in smal matters, and do not exchange friendship for enmity,	15 Ni en lo grande ni en lo pequeño yerres, ni de amigo te vuelvas enemigo.
