1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.	1 - Ha l'argento un principio dei suoi filoni, e l'oro ha un posto ove si fonde;
2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.	2 il ferro si estrae dalla terra, e la pietra, liquefatta dal calore, si converte in rame;
3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.	3 un limite [l'uomo] ha posto alle tenebre, e scruta l'estremità di ogni cosa, perfin la pietra ch'è nella tenebra e l'ombra di morte!
4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.	4 Scava egli una galleria lungi da ogni dimora: dimenticàti dagli uomini [i minatori] oscillano, [non servendosi], di piede penzolano.
5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.	5 La terra, da cui nasceva il pane, al disotto è sconvolta da un fuoco;
6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.	6 le sue pietre sono il posto dello zaffiro, e le sue zolle contengono oro
7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;	7 è strada che l'uccello non conosce, nè la scorge l'occhio dello sparviere,
8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.	8 non la calpestano le bestie feroci, non incede sovr'essa il leone;
9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.	9 nella selce stende [l'uomo] la mano, sconvolge dalle radici le montagne:
10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.	10 entro le rupi egli scava dei canali, ed ogni cosa preziosa l'occhio suo vede,
11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.	11 scruta anche il profondo dei fiumi, e le cose recondite porta alla luce.
12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	12 Ma la sapienza dove si trova? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?
13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.	13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo, nè si trova in terra di chi vive deliziosamente.
14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.	14 L'abisso esclama: - In me non c'è! -E il mare dice: - Presso me non esiste! -
15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,	15 Non si dà oro fino in cambio di essa, nè si pesa dell'argento in suo prezzo;
16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.	16 non si confronta con i tessuti tinti coi colori dell'India, nè con l'onice preziosissimo e lo zaffiro;
17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,	17 non si paragona ad essa l'oro e il vetro, nè si scambia con vasellame d'oro;
18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!	18 le cose più nobili e pregiate neppur si ricordano in suo confrontoe la sapienza da luoghi occulti si estrae.
19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.	19 Non si eguaglia ad essa il topazio d'Etiopianè si mette a confronto con i [tessuti di] tinta mondissima.
20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?	20 Da dove viene dunque la sapienza? e qual è il posto dell'intelligenza?
21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.	21 Ella è nascosta agli occhi di tutti i viventi, e pure agli uccelli del cielo è occulta.
22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'	22 La ruina e la morte esclamano:- [Solo] con le nostre orecchie ne udimmo novella! -
23 God alone understands her path and knows where she is to be found.	23 Dio conosce la strada di lei, ed egli sa il suo posto,
24 (For he sees to the remotest parts of the earth, and observes al that lies under heaven.)	24 perchè egli scorge i confini del mondo, e vede tutto ciò ch'è sotto al cielo.
25 When he wil ed to give weight to the wind and measured out the waters with a gauge,	25 Egli che determinò ai venti un peso, e stabilì le acque con misura:
26 when he imposed a law on the rain and mapped a route for thunderclaps to fol ow,	26 quando dette alle piogge una legge, ed una strada alle sonanti procelle,
27 then he saw and evaluated her, looked her through and through, assessing her.	27 allora egli la vide e manifestò, la stabilì e investigò,
28 Then he said to human beings, 'Wisdom? - that is fear of the Lord; Intel igence? - avoidance of evil.'	28 e disse all'uomo: - Ecco, il timor del Signore è la stessa sapienza, e il ritrarsi del male è l'intelligenza. -»
