2 Maccabees 15

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the neighbourhood of Samaria, so he decided to attackthem, at no risk to himself, on the day of rest.	1 Supo Nicanor que los hombres de Judas se hallaban en la región de Samaría y decidió atacarlos sin riesgo en el día del descanso.
2 Those Jews who had been compel ed to follow him, said, 'Do not massacre them in such a savage,barbarous way. Respect the day on which the All-seeing has conferred a special holiness.'	2 Los judíos, que le acompañaban a la fuerza, le dijeron: «No mates así de modo tan salvaje y bárbaro; respeta y honra más bien el día que con preferencia ha sido santificado por Aquél que todo lo ve».
3 At this the triple-dyed scoundrel asked if there were in heaven a sovereign who had ordered thekeeping of the Sabbath day.	3 Aquel hombre tres veces malvado preguntó si en el cielo había un Soberano que hubiera prescrito celebrar el día del sábado.
4 When they answered, 'The living Lord himself, the Heavenly Sovereign, has ordered the observanceof the seventh day,'	4 Ellos le replicaron: «Es el mismo Señor que vive como Soberano en el cielo el que mandó observar el día séptimo».
5 he retorted, 'And I, as sovereign on earth, order you to take up arms and do the king's business.' Foral that, he did not manage to carry out his wicked plan.	5 Entonces el otro dijo: «También yo soy soberano en la tierra: el que ordena tomar las armas y prestar servicio al rey». Sin embargo no pudo realizar su malvado designio.
6 While Nicanor, in his unlimited boastfulness and pride, was planning to erect a general trophy with thespoils taken from Judas and his men,	6 Nicanor, jactándose con altivez, deliberaba erigir un trofeo común con los despojos de los hombres de Judas.
7 Maccabaeus remained firm in his confident conviction that the Lord would stand by him.	7 Macabeo, por su parte, mantenía incesantemente su confianza, con la entera esperanza de recibir ayuda de parte del Señor,
8 He urged his men not to be dismayed by the foreigners' attacks but, keeping in mind the help that hadcome to them from Heaven in the past, to be confident that this time too victory would be theirs with the help ofthe Almighty.	8 y exhortaba a los que le acompañaban a no temer el ataque de los gentiles, teniendo presentes en la mente los auxilios que antes les habían venido del Cielo, y a esperar también entonces la victoria que les habría de venir de parte del Todopoderoso.
9 He put fresh heart into them by citing the Law and the Prophets and, by stirring up memories of thebattles they had already won, he fil ed them with new enthusiasm.	9 Les animaba citando la Ley y los Profetas, y les recordaba los combates que habían llevado a cabo; así les infundía mayor ardor.
10 Having thus aroused their courage, he ended his exhortation by demonstrating the treachery of theforeigners and how they had violated their oaths.	10 Después de haber levantado sus ánimos, les puso además de manifiesto la perfidia de los gentiles y la violación de sus juramentos.
11 Having armed each one of them not so much with the safety given by shield and lance as with thatconfidence which springs from noble language, he encouraged them al by describing to them a convincingdream -- a vision, as it were.	11 Armó a cada uno de ellos, no tanto con la seguridad de los escudos y las lanzas, como con la confianza de sus buenas palabras. Les refirió además un sueño digno de crédito, una especie de visión, que alegró a todos.
12 What he had seen was this: Onias, the former high priest, that paragon of men, modest of bearingand gentle of manners, suitably eloquent and trained from boyhood in the practice of every virtue -- Onias wasstretching out his hands and praying for the whole Jewish community.	12 Su visión fue tal como sigue: Onías, que había sido sumo sacerdote, hombre bueno y bondadoso, afable, de suaves maneras, distinguido en su conversación, preocupado desde la niñez por la práctica de la virtud, suplicaba con las manos tendidas por toda la comunidad de los judíos.
13 Next, there appeared a man equal y remarkable for his great age and dignity and invested with amarvel ous and impressive air of majesty.	13 Luego se apareció también un hombre que se distinguía por sus blancos cabellos y su dignidad, rodeado de admirable y majestuosa soberanía.
14 Onias began to speak: 'This is a man', he said, 'who loves his brothers and prays much for thepeople and the holy city-Jeremiah, the prophet of God.'	14 Onías había dicho: «Este es el que ama a sus hermanos, el que ora mucho por su pueblo y por la ciudad santa, Jeremías, el profeta de Dios».
15 Jeremiah then stretched out his right hand and presented Judas with a golden sword, saying as hegave it,	15 Jeremías, tendiendo su diestra, había entregado a Judas una espada de oro, y al dársela había pronunciado estas palabras:
16 'Take this holy sword as a gift from God; with it you wil shatter the enemy.'	16 «Recibe, como regalo de parte de Dios, esta espada sagrada, con la que destrozarás a los enemigos».
17 Encouraged by the noble words of Judas, which had the power to inspire valour and give the youngthe spirit of mature men, they decided not to entrench themselves in a camp, but bravely to take the offensiveand, in hand-to-hand fighting, to commit the result to the fortune of war, since the city, their holy religion and theTemple were in danger.	17 Animados por estas bellísimas palabras de Judas, capaces de estimular al valor y de robustecer las almas jóvenes, decidieron no resguardarse en la defensa, sino lanzarse valerosamente a la ofensiva y que, en un cuerpo a cuerpo, la fortuna decidiera, porque peligraban la ciudad, la religión y el Templo.
18 Their concern for their wives and children, their brothers and relatives, had shrunk to minuteimportance; their chief and greatest fear was for the consecrated Temple.	18 En verdad que el cuidado por sus mujeres e hijos, por sus hermanos y parientes quedaba en segundo término; el primero y principal era por el Templo consagrado.
19 Those left behind in the city felt a similar anxiety, alarmed as they were about the forthcomingencounter in the open country.	19 Igualmente para los que habían quedado en la ciudad no era menor la ansiedad, preocupados como estaban por el ataque en campo raso.
20 Everyone now awaited the coming issue. The enemy had already concentrated their forces andstood formed up in order of battle, with the elephants drawn up in a strategic position and the cavalry disposedon the wings.	20 Todos aguardaban la decisión inmimente. Los enemigos se habían concentrado y el ejército se había alineado en orden de batalla. Los elefantes se habían situado en lugar apropiado y la caballería estaba dispuesta en las alas.
21 Maccabaeus took note of these masses confronting him, the glittering array of armour and the fierceaspect of the elephants; then, raising his hands to heaven, he called on the Lord who works miracles, in theknowledge that it is not by force of arms but as he sees fit to decide, that victory is granted by him to such asdeserve it.	21 Entonces Macabeo, al observar la presencia de las tropas, la variedad de las armas preparadas y el fiero aspecto de los elefantes, extendió las manos al cielo e invocó al Señor que hace prodigios, pues bien sabía que, no por medio de las armas, sino según su decisión, concede él la victoria a los que la merecen.
22 His prayer was worded thus: 'You, Master, sent your angel in the days of Hezekiah king of Judaea,and he destroyed no less than one hundred and eighty-five thousand of Sennacherib's army;	22 Decía su invocación de la siguiente forma: «Tú, Soberano, enviaste tu ángel a Ezequías, rey de Judá, que dio muerte a cerca de 185.000 hombres del ejército de Senaquerib;
23 now, once again, Sovereign of heaven, send a good angel before us to spread terror and dismay.	23 ahora también, Señor de los cielos, envía un ángel bueno delante de nosotros para infundir el temor y el espanto.
24 May these men be struck down by the might of your arm, since they have come with blasphemy ontheir lips to attack your holy people.' And on these words he finished.	24 ¡Que el poder de tu brazo hiera a los que han venido blasfemando a atacar a tu pueblo santo!» Así terminó sus palabras.
25 Nicanor and his men advanced to the sound of trumpets and war songs,	25 Mientras la gente de Nicanor avanzaba al son de trompetas y cantos de guerra,
26 but the men of Judas closed with the enemy uttering invocations and prayers.	26 los hombres de Judas entablaron combate con el enemigo entre invocaciones y plegarias.
27 Fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they cut down at least thirty-fivethousand men and were greatly cheered by this manifestation of God.	27 Luchando con las manos, pero orando a Dios en su corazón, abatieron no menos de 35.000 hombres, regocijándose mucho por la manifestación de Dios.
28 When the engagement was over and they were withdrawing in triumph, they recognised Nicanor,lying dead in ful armour.	28 Al volver de su empresa, en gozoso retorno, reconocieron a Nicanor caído, con su armadura.
29 With shouting and confusion all around, they blessed the sovereign Master in their ancestral tongue.	29 Entre clamores y tumulto, bendecían al Señor en su lengua patria.
30 He who, as protagonist, had devoted himself, body and soul, to his fel ow-citizens, and hadpreserved the love he felt even in youth for those of his own race, gave orders for Nicanor's head to be cut off,with his arm up to the shoulder, and taken to Jerusalem.	30 Entonces, el que en primera fila se había entregado, en cuerpo y alma, al bien de sus conciudadanos, el que había guardado hacia sus compatriotas los buenos sentimientos de su juventud, mandó cortar la cabeza de Nicanor y su brazo, hasta el hombro, y llevarlos a Jerusalén.
31 When he arrived there himself, he cal ed his countrymen together, stationed the priests in front of thealtar and then sent for the people from the Citadel.	31 Llegado allí convocó a sus compatriotas, puso a los sacerdotes ante el altar y mandó buscar a los de la Ciudadela.
32 He showed them the head of the abominable Nicanor, and the hand which this infamous man hadstretched out so insolently against the holy House of the Almighty.	32 Les mostró la cabeza del abominable Nicanor y la mano que aquel infame había tendido insolentemente hacia la santa Casa del Todopoderoso;
33 Then, cutting out godless Nicanor's tongue, he gave orders for it to be fed piecemeal to the birds,and for the salary of his folly to be hung up in front of the Temple.	33 y después de haber cortado la lengua del impío Nicanor, ordenó que se diera en trozos a los pájaros y que se colgara frente al santuario la paga de su insensatez.
34 At this, everyone sent blessings heavenwards to the glorious Lord, saying, 'Blessed be he who haspreserved his holy place from pol ution!'	34 Todos entonces levantaron hacia el cielo sus bendiciones en honor del Señor que se les había manifestado, diciendo: «Bendito el que ha conservado puro su Lugar Santo».
35 He hung Nicanor's head from the Citadel, a clear and evident sign to al of the help of the Lord.	35 La cabeza de Nicanor fue colgada de la Ciudadela, como señal manifiesta y visible para todos del auxilio del Señor.
36 They al decreed by public vote never to let that day go by unobserved, but to celebrate thethirteenth day of the twelfth month, cal ed Adar in Aramaic, the eve of what is called the Day of Mordecai.	36 Decretaron todos por público edicto no dejar pasar aquel día sin solemnizarlo, y celebrarlo el día trece del duodécino mes, llamado Adar en arameo, la víspera del Día de Mardoqueo.
37 So ends the episode of Nicanor, and as, since then, the city has remained in the possession of theHebrews, I shal bring my own work to an end here too.	37 Así pasaron los acontecimientos relacionados con Nicanor. Como desde aquella época la ciudad quedó en poder de los hebreos, yo también terminaré aquí mismo mi relato.
38 If it is wel composed and to the point, that is just what I wanted. If it is worthless and mediocre, thatis al I could manage.	38 Si ha quedado bello y logrado en su composición, eso es lo que yo pretendía; si imperfecto y mediocre, he hecho cuanto me era posible.
39 Just as it is injurious to drink wine by itself, or again water alone, whereas wine mixed with water ispleasant and produces a delightful sense of wel -being, so skil in presenting the incidents is what delights theunderstanding of those who read the book. And here I close.	39 Como el beber vino solo o sola agua es dañoso, y en cambio, el vino mezclado con agua es agradable y de un gusto delicioso, igualmente la disposición grata del relato encanta los oídos de los que dan en leer la obra.
