1 In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men discovered that Antiochus Eupator wasadvancing in force against Judaea,	1 L'anno cento quarantanove, Giuda seppe che Antioco Eupatore veniva con numeroso esercito contro la Giudea,
2 and with him Lysias his tutor and chief minister; he had moreover a Greek force of one hundred andten thousand infantry, five thousand three hundred cavalry, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariotsfitted with scythes.	2 e che aveva seco Lisia, suo procuratore e primo ministro degli affari del regno, il quale conduceva centodieci mila fanti e cinque mila cavalieri e ventidue elefanti, e trecento carri armati di falci.
3 Menelaus, too, joined them and very craftily kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his owncountry but in the hope of being restored to office.	3 Si unì ad essi anche Menelao, il quale con molti inganni supplicava Antioco, non per la salvezza della patria, ma colla speranza d'essere rimesso in possesso del principato.
4 But the King of kings stirred up the anger of Antiochus against the guilty wretch, and when Lysiasmade it clear to the king that Menelaus was the cause of all the troubles, Antiochus gave orders for him to betaken to Beroea and there put to death by the local method of execution.	4 Ma il Re dei re suscitò lo sdegno d'Antioco contro quel peccatore, e, avendolo Lisia rappresentato come la causa di tutti i mali, il re comandò che, secondo il costume di quel paese, fosse preso e fatto morire nel medesimo luogo.

6 If anyone is convicted of sacrilegious theft or of some other heinous crime, he is taken up to the topand pushed over to perish.	6 Ordinò che il sacrilego fosse precipitato nella cenere, dandogli tutti la spinta per la rovina.
7 In such a manner was the renegade fated to die; Menelaus had not even the privilege of burial.	7 E fu per tal legge che giunse a morire il prevaricatore della legge, Menelao, senza essere affidato alla terra.

10 When Judas heard of this, he ordered the people day and night to cal on the Lord as never before,to come to the help of those who were in peril of being deprived of the Law, their fatherland and the holy Temple,	10 Giuda, sapute queste cose, ordinò al popolo d'invocare giorno e notte il Signore, affinchè come sempre ancora li aiutasse,
11 and not to al ow the people, just when they were beginning to breathe again, to fall into the power ofil -famed foreigners.	11 perchè temevano di avere a perdere la legge, la patria e il tempio santo, affinchè non permettesse che fosse di nuovo soggetto alle blasfeme nazioni quel popolo che poco prima aveva cominciato a respirare un poco.
12 When they had al , with one voice, obeyed his instructions and had made their petitions to themerciful Lord, weeping, fasting and prostrating themselves for three days continuously, Judas spoke words ofencouragement and told them to keep close to him.	12 Dopo che essi ebbero fatto ciò tutti insieme, ed ebbero implorata la misericordia del Signore con lacrime e digiuni, prostrati per tre giorni continui per terra, Giuda li esortò a tenersi pronti.
13 After separate consultation with the elders, he resolved not to wait for the king's army to invadeJudaea and take possession of the city, but to march out and settle the whole matter with the Lord's help.	13 Egli cogli anziani aveva deciso di uscire in campo prima che il re coll'esercito si accostasse alla Giudea, e s'impadronisse della città, e di rimettere al giudizio di Dio la riuscita della cosa.
14 Having thus committed the outcome to the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his soldiers tofight bravely to the death for the laws, the Temple, the city, their country and their way of life, he encamped hisarmy near Modein.	14 Riconosciuto adunque il potere su tutte le cose a Dio creatore del mondo, ed esortati i suoi a combattere virilmente, a difendere fino alla morte le leggi, il tempio, la città, la patria, i cittadini, si accampò coll'esercito vicino a Modin.
15 Giving his men the password 'Victory from God', he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with apicked band of the bravest young men. Inside the camp he destroyed about two thousand, and his men cutdown the largest of the elephants with its mahout;	15 Data ai suoi come parola d'ordine: « Vittoria di Dio », scelti dei giovani fortissimi, di notte assalì la tenda del re, e negli accampamenti uccise quattro mila uomini, e il più grande degli elefanti, con quelli che vi stavan sopra.
16 having eventual y filled the camp with terror and confusion, they successful y withdrew,	16 Riempiti di spavento e di scompiglio gli accampamenti con sì felice impresa, si ritirarono.
17 just as dawn was breaking. This was achieved, thanks to the protection which the Lord grantedJudas.	17 Al primo albeggiare del giorno ciò era compiuto, coll'aiuto della protezione di Dio.
18 The king, having had a taste of Jewish daring, now tried to capture their positions by trickery.	18 Avuta la prova dell'audacia dei Giudei, il re tentava d'occupare con arte i luoghi difficili.
19 He advanced on Beth-Zur, a strong fortress of the Jews, but was checked, overcome and sorepulsed.	19 E si accostò coll'esercito a Betsura, ben munita fortezza dei Giudei; ma era respinto, rovesciato, decimato.
20 Judas supplied the garrison with what they needed,	20 Giuda mandava agli assediati il necessario.

22 A second time, the king parleyed with the garrison of Beth-Zur; he offered and accepted pledges offriendship, retired, then attacked Judas and his men, but lost the battle.	22 Il re di nuovo trattò con quelli che erano in Betsura, e, data e ricevuta la destra, se ne andò.
23 He was then told that Philip, left in charge of affairs, had rebelled in Antioch. He was stunned by this,opened negotiations with the Jews, came to an agreement, and swore to abide by al reasonable conditions.Agreement reached, he offered a sacrifice, honoured the Temple, and made generous gifts to the holy place.	23 E attaccò battaglia con Giuda, e fu vinto. Poi avendo saputo che Filippo, lasciato a capo degli affari, si era ribellato ad Antiochia, ne restò costernato nell'animo, e, raccomandandosi ai Giudei, si assoggettò ad essi, e giurò tutto quello che parve loro giusto, e, fatta la riconciliazione, offrì un sacrifizio, onorò il tempio e vi pose dei doni.
24 He received Maccabaeus kindly and, leaving Hegemonides to exercise command from Ptolemais tothe territory of the Gerrenians,	24 Abbracciò Maccabeo, e lo fece governatore e principe da Tolemaide ai Gerreni.

26 Lysias mounted the rostrum and made a convincing defence of the provisions which convinced andcalmed them and won their goodwil . He then withdrew to Antioch. So much for the episode of the king'soffensive and retreat.	26 Allora Lisia salì sulla tribuna, ed esposte le ragioni, sedò il popolo, e se ne tornò ad Antiochia. Così andò il viaggio e il ritorno del re.
