Exodus 18

1 Jethro, priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, had heard al about what God had done for Moses andfor Israel his people: how Yahweh had brought Israel out of Egypt.	1 E quando ebbe udito Ietro prete di Madian, cognato di Moise, ogni cosa che avea fatta lo Signore a Moisè e ad Israel suo popolo, però ch' egli avea tratto Israel d'Egitto;
2 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then took back Zipporah, Moses' wife, whom Moses had sent home,	2 tolse Sefora moglie di Moisè, la quale avea rimandato,
3 with her two sons; one of them was cal ed Gershom because, he had said, 'I am an alien in a foreignland,'	3 e due suoi figliuoli, de' quali l'uno si chiamava Gersam, dicendo lo padre: FORESTIERE FUI NELLA TERRA ALTRUI,
4 and the other cal ed Eliezer because 'My father's God is my help and has delivered me from Pharaoh'ssword.'	4 e l'altro era chiamato Eliezer; disse in verità: IDDIO DEL PADRE MIO AIUTÒ ME, E SCAMPÒ ME DAL COLTELLO DI FARAONE.
5 Then Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, with Moses' sons and wife, came to Moses in the desert where hewas encamped, at the mountain of God.	5 Venne adunque Ietro, cognato di Moisè, e li figliuoli suoi e la moglie sua a Moisè nel deserto, dove s'era incastellato appresso lo monte di Dio.
6 'Here is your father-in-law Jethro approaching', Moses was told, 'with your wife and her two sons.'	6 E mandò a Moisè dicendo: io, cognato tuo Ietro, vengo a te, e la moglie tua, e due tuoi figliuoli con lei.
7 So Moses went out to greet his father-in-law, bowed low to him and kissed him; and when each hadasked how the other was they went into the tent.	7 Il quale venuto incontro al cognato suo, adorollo e basciò lui; e salutaronsi insieme con parole pacifiche. E quando entroe nel tabernacolo,
8 Moses then told his father-in-law al about what Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians forIsrael's sake, and about al the hardships that they had encountered on the way, and how Yahweh had rescuedthem.	8 narrò Moisè al cognato suo tutte quelle cose, che fece lo Signore (a Moisè, ed) a Faraone e a quegli d'Egitto per Israel, e tutta la fatica ch' era incontrata loro nello andare, e come liberò loro lo Signore.
9 And Jethro was delighted at al Yahweh's goodness to Israel in having rescued them from the clutchesof the Egyptians.	9 E rallegrossi Ietro sopra tutti li beni li quali avea fatti lo Signore ad Israel; perciò che avea iscampato lui lo Signore della mano di quelli di Egitto (e della mano di Faraone).
10 'Blessed be Yahweh', Jethro exclaimed, 'for having rescued you from the clutches of the Egyptiansand the clutches of Pharaoh, for having rescued the people from the grasp of the Egyptians!	10 E disse: benedetto lo Signore, che liberò voi della mano di quelli d'Egitto e della mano di Faraone; il quale iscampò lo popolo suo della mano di quelli d'Egitto.
11 Now I know that Yahweh is greater than al other gods. . .'	11 Ora io conosco che grande è lo Signore sopra tutti gli dii, perciò che magnamente ha fatto contra coloro di Egitto (per prego di Moisè).
12 Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, then offered a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God; and Aaron and al the elders of Israel came and ate with Moses' father-in-law in the presence of God.	12 Offerse adunque letro, cognato di Moisè, li sacrificii e l'ostie a Dio; e vennero (Moisè ed) Aaron e tutti li più vecchi d'Israel, acciò che mangiassero del pane con lui innanzi al Signore.
13 On the fol owing day, Moses took his seat to administer justice for the people, and the people werestanding round him from morning til evening.	13 Ma l'altro dì sedè Moisè, acciò che giudi casse al popolo, il quale istava presente a Moisè dalla mattina insino al vespro.
14 Seeing all he did for the people, Moses' father-in-law said to him, 'Why do you do this for the people,why sit here alone with the people standing round you from morning til evening?'	14 La quale cosa quando vidde letro suo cognato, tutte le cose cioè che facea nel popolo, disse: che è questo che tu fai nel popolo? perchè solo siedi, e tutto lo popolo t'aspetta dalla mattina insino al vespro?
15 Moses replied to his father-in-law, 'Because the people come to me to consult God.	15 Al quale rispose Moisè; venne a me lo popolo, addomandando la sentenza di Dio.
16 When they have a problem they come to me, and I give a ruling between the one and the other andmake God's statutes and laws known to them.'	16 E quando incontra loro alcuna (discordia, ovver discettazione), vengono a me, acciò ch' io giudichi intra loro, e mostri li comandamenti di Dio e le leggi sue.
17 Moses' father-in-law then said to him, 'What you are doing is not right.	17 E quelli disse: tu non fai buona cosa.
18 You wil only tire yourself out, and the people with you too, for the work is too heavy for you. Youcannot do it all yourself.	18 Conciosia cosa che per fatica ti consumerai tu, e questo popolo il quale è teco; oltre le forze tue è questa cosa; solo non potresti sostenere.
19 Now listen to the advice I am going to give you, and God be with you! Your task is to represent thepeople to God, to lay their cases before God,	19 Ma odi le parole mie e li consigli, e sarae lo Signore teco: fa che tu sia sopra il popolo in quelle cose che al Signore s'appartengono, acciò che tu rapporti quelle cose che sono dette da Dio;
20 and to teach them the statutes and laws, and show them the way they ought to fol ow and how theyought to behave.	20 e mostri al popolo le cerimonie e lo rito (cioè modo) di adorare, e la via per la quale andare debbano, e le opere che debbano fare.
21 At the same time, from the people at large choose capable and God-fearing men, men who aretrustworthy and incorruptible, and put them in charge of them as heads of thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens,	21 Ma provedi di ogni schiatta uomini potenti e tementi Iddio, nelli quali sia verità, e che abbiano in odio l'avarizia; e ordina di loro li tribuni, li centurioni e li quinquagenarii e li decani;
22 and make them the people's permanent judges. They wil refer al important matters to you, but alminor matters they will decide themselves, so making things easier for you by sharing the burden with you.	22 li quali giudichino lo popolo in ogni tempo; e qualunque cosa sarà maggiore, riportinla a te; e loro le cose minori giudichin solamente: più lieve sarà a te, partito lo carico in altri.
23 If you do this -- and may God so command you -- you will be able to stand the strain, and all thesepeople wil go home satisfied.'	23 Se questo farai, tu empirai ogni comandamento di Dio; e li comandamenti di Dio potrai sostenere; e tutto questo popolo sì ritornerà ai luoghi suoi con pace.
24 Moses took his father-in-law's advice and did just as he said.	24 Le quali cose udite, Moisè fece ogni cosa che colui gli avea detto.
25 Moses chose capable men from al Israel and put them in charge of the people as heads ofthousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.	25 Ed eletti gli uomini più savii e migliori di tutto Israel, fece loro principi del popolo, tribuni e centurioni e quinquagenarii e decani.
26 These acted as the people's permanent judges. They referred hard cases to Moses but decidedminor matters themselves.	26 Li quali giudicassero lo popolo in ogni tempo; ma qualunque cosa era più grave, sì la porgevano a lui; solamente le cose più agevoli giudicavano.
27 Moses then set his father-in-law on his way, and he travelled back to his own country.	27 E lasciò lo cognato suo; il quale, ritornato, andò nella terra sua.
