NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb.1 It was very early on the first day of the week and stil dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put him."2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have takenthe Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'
So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb.3 So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first;4 They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first;
he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in.5 he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in.
When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there,6 Simon Peter, fol owing him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground
and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place.7 and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in aplace by itself.
Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.8 Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed.
For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.9 Til this moment they had stil not understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples returned home.10 The disciples then went back home.
But Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb11 But Mary was standing outside near the tomb, weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped to lookinside,
and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been.12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other atthe feet.
And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don't know where they laid him."13 They said, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 'They have taken my Lord away,' she replied, 'and I don'tknow where they have put him.'
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus.14 As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realise that itwas Jesus.
Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you laid him, and I will take him."15 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be thegardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tel me where you have put him, and I will go and removehim.'
Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," which means Teacher.16 Jesus said, 'Mary!' She turned round then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' -- which meansMaster.
Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"17 Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to thebrothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'
Mary of Magdala went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and what he told her.18 So Mary of Magdala told the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that he had said these things toher.
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you."19 In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room wherethe disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be withyou,'
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.20 and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy atseeing the Lord,
(Jesus) said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."21 and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.'
And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the holy Spirit.22 After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."23 If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.
Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.24 Thomas, cal ed the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."25 So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord,' but he answered, 'Unless I can see theholes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put myhand into his side, I refuse to believe.'
Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you."26 Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors wereclosed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. 'Peace be with you,' he said.
Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe."27 Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put itinto my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.'
Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!"28 Thomas replied, 'My Lord and my God!'
Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."29 Jesus said to him: You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen andyet believe.
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of (his) disciples that are not written in this book.30 There were many other signs that Jesus worked in the sight of the disciples, but they are notrecorded in this book.
But these are written that you may (come to) believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.31 These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatbelieving this you may have life through his name.
