Sirach 38

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 Hold the physician in honor, for he is essential to you, and God it was who established his profession.	1 Da al médico, por sus servicios, los honores que merece, que también a él le creó el Señor.
2 From God the doctor has his wisdom, and the king provides for his sustenance.	2 Pues del Altísimo viene la curación, como una dádiva que del rey se recibe.
3 His knowledge makes the doctor distinguished, and gives him access to those in authority.	3 La ciencia del médico realza su cabeza, y ante los grandes es admirado.
4 God makes the earth yield healing herbs which the prudent man should not neglect;	4 El Señor puso en la tierra medicinas, el varón prudente no las desdeña.
5 Was not the water sweetened by a twig that men might learn his power?	5 ¿No fue el agua endulzada con un leño para que se conociera su virtud?
6 He endows men with the knowledge to glory in his mighty works,	6 El mismo dio a los hombres la ciencia para que se gloriaran en sus maravillas.
7 Through which the doctor eases pain and the druggist prepares his medicines;	7 Con ellas cura él y quita el sufrimiento, con ellas el farmacéutico hace mixturas.
8 Thus God's creative work continues without cease in its efficacy on the surface of the earth.	8 Así nunca se acaban sus obras, y de él viene la paz sobre la haz de la tierra.
9 My son, when you are ill, delay not, but pray to God, who will heal you:	9 Hijo, en tu enfermedad, no seas negligente, sino ruega al Señor, que él te curará.
10 Flee wickedness; let your hands be just, cleanse your heart of every sin;	10 Aparta las faltas, endereza tus manos, y de todo pecado purifica el corazón.
11 Offer your sweet-smelling oblation and petition, a rich offering according to your means.	11 Ofrece incienso y memorial de flor de harina, haz pingües ofrendas según tus medios.
12 Then give the doctor his place lest he leave; for you need him too.	12 Recurre luego al médico, pues el Señor le creó también a él, que no se aparte de tu lado, pues de él has menester.
13 There are times that give him an advantage,	13 Hay momentos en que en su mano está la solución,
14 and he too beseeches God That his diagnosis may be correct and his treatment bring about a cure.	14 pues ellos también al Señor suplicarán que les ponga en buen camino hacia el alivio y hacia la curación para salvar tu vida.
15 He who is a sinner toward his Maker will be defiant toward the doctor.	15 El que peca delante de su Hacedor ¡caiga en manos del médico!
16 My son, shed tears for one who is dead with wailing and bitter lament; As is only proper, prepare the body, absent not yourself from his burial:	16 Hijo, por un muerto lágrimas derrama, como quien sufre cruelmente, entona la lamentación; según el ceremonial entierra su cadáver y no seas negligente con su sepultura.
17 Weeping bitterly, mourning fully, pay your tribute of sorrow, as he deserves,	17 Llora amargamente, date fuertes golpes de pecho, haz el duelo según su dignidad, un día o dos, para evitar murmullos; después, consuélate de la tristeza.
18 One or two days, to prevent gossip; then compose yourself after your grief,	18 Porque de la tristeza sale la muerte, la tristeza del corazón enerva las fuerzas.
19 For grief can bring on an extremity and heartache destroy one's health.	19 En la adversidad permanece también la tristeza, una vida de miseria va contra el corazón.
20 Turn not your thoughts to him again; cease to recall him; think rather of the end.	20 No des tu corazón a la tristeza, evítala acordándote del fin.
21 Recall him not, for there is no hope of his return; it will not help him, but will do you harm.	21 No lo olvides: no hay retorno, a él no le aprovechará, y te harás daño a ti mismo.
22 Remember that his fate will also be yours; for him it was yesterday, for you today.	22 «Recuerda mi sentencia, que será también la tuya: a mí ayer, a ti te toca hoy».
23 With the departed dead, let memory fade; rally your courage, once the soul has left.	23 Cuando un muerto reposa, deja en paz su memoria, consuélate de él, porque su espíritu ha partido.
24 The scribe's profession increases his wisdom; whoever is free from toil can become a wise man.	24 La sabiduría del escriba se adquiere en los ratos de sosiego, el que se libera de negocios se hará sabio.
25 How can he become learned who guides the plow, who thrills in wielding the goad like a lance, Who guides the ox and urges on the bullock, and whose every concern is for cattle?	25 ¿Cómo va a hacerse sabio el que empuña el arado, y se gloría de tener por lanza el aguijón, el que conduce bueyes, los arrea en sus trabajos y no sabe hablar más que de novillos?
26 His care is for plowing furrows, and he keeps a watch on the beasts in the stalls.	26 Aplica su corazón a abrir surcos, y sus vigilias a cebar terneras.
27 So with every engraver and designer who, laboring night and day, Fashions carved seals, and whose concern is to vary the pattern. His care is to produce a vivid impression, and he keeps watch till he finishes his design.	27 De igual modo todo obrero o artesano, que trabaja día y noche; los que graban las efigies de los sellos, y su afán se centra en variar los detalles; ponen todo su corazón en igualar el modelo y gastan sus vigilias en rematar la obra.
28 So with the smith standing near his anvil, forging crude iron. The heat from the fire sears his flesh, yet he toils away in the furnace heat. The clang of the hammer deafens his ears, His eyes are fixed on the tool he is shaping. His care is to finish his work, and he keeps watch till he perfects it in detail.	28 También el herrero sentado junto al yunque, atento a los trabajos del hierro; el vaho del fuego sus carnes derrite, en el calor de la fragua se debate, el ruido del martillo le ensordece, y en el modelo del objeto tiene fijos sus ojos; pone su corazón en concluir sus obras, y sus vigilias en adornarlas al detalle.
29 So with the potter sitting at his labor, revolving the wheel with his feet. He is always concerned for his products, and turns them out in quantity.	29 De igual modo el alfarero sentado a su tarea y dando a la rueda con sus pies, preocupado sin cesar por su trabajo, toda su actividad concentrada en el número;
30 With his hands he molds the clay, and with his feet softens it. His care is for proper coloring, and he keeps watch on the fire of his kiln.	30 con su brazo moldea la arcilla, con sus pies vence su resistencia; pone su corazón en acabar el barnizado, y gasta sus vigilias en limpiar el horno.
31 All these men are skilled with their hands, each one an expert at his own task;	31 Todos éstos ponen su confianza en sus manos, y cada uno se muestra sabio en su tarea.
32 Without them no city could be lived in, and wherever they stay, they need not hunger.	32 Sin ellos no se construiría ciudad alguna, ni se podría habitar ni circular por ella.
33 They do not occupy the judge's bench, nor are they prominent in the assembly; They set forth no decisions or judgments, nor are they found among the rulers;	33 Mas para el consejo del pueblo no se les busca, ni se les distingue en la asamblea. No se sientan en sitial de juez, ni meditan en la alianza del juicio.
34 Yet they maintain God's ancient handiwork, and their concern is for exercise of their skill.	34 No demuestran instrucción ni juicio, ni se les encuentra entre los que dicen máximas. Pero aseguran la creación eterna, el objeto de su oración son los trabajos de su oficio.
