1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.	1 Giuda venne a conoscere la fama dei Romani: che essi erano molto potenti e favorivano tutti quelli che simpatizzavano per loro e accordavano amicizia a quanti si rivolgevano a loro e che erano forti e potenti.
2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.	2 Gli furono narrate le loro guerre e le loro imprese gloriose compiute tra i Galli e come li avessero vinti e resi tributari;
3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,	3 quanto avevano compiuto nella Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere d’oro e d’argento che vi sono,
4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.	4 e come avevano sottomesso tutta la regione con la loro saggezza e costanza, benché il paese fosse assai lontano da loro. Avevano vinto i re che erano venuti contro di loro dall’estremità della terra: li avevano sconfitti e avevano inflitto loro gravi colpi, mentre gli altri pagavano loro il tributo ogni anno.
5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.	5 Avevano poi sconfitto in guerra e sottomesso Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittìm, e quanti si erano sollevati contro di loro.
6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.	6 Antioco, il grande re dell’Asia, era sceso in guerra contro di loro con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito immenso, ma era stato sconfitto da loro,
7 They had taken him alive and obliged him and the kings who succeeded him to pay a heavy tribute, to give hostages and a section of	7 lo avevano preso vivo e gli avevano imposto di pagare, lui e i suoi successori, un tributo ingente, di dare ostaggi e cedere

10 the Romans discovered it, and sent against the Greeks a single general who made war on them. Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.	10 ma la cosa era stata da loro risaputa, e avevano mandato contro di loro un solo generale, erano venuti a battaglia con loro e molti caddero uccisi; avevano condotto in schiavitù le loro mogli e i loro figli e avevano saccheggiato i loro beni, avevano conquistato il paese, avevano abbattuto le loro fortezze e li avevano resi soggetti fino ad oggi.
11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;	11 Avevano distrutto e soggiogato gli altri regni e le isole e quanti per avventura si erano opposti a loro. Con i loro amici invece e con quanti si appoggiavano a loro avevano mantenuto amicizia.
12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.	12 Avevano assoggettato i re vicini e quelli lontani, e quanti sentivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.
13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.	13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi vogliono, li depongono, tanto si sono levati in alto.
14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.	14 Con tutti questi successi nessuno di loro si è imposto il diadema né si è rivestito di porpora per fregiarsene.
15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.	15 Essi hanno costituito un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi consiglieri si consultano continuamente riguardo al popolo, perché sia ben governato.
16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.	16 Affidano il comando e il governo di tutti i loro domìni a uno di loro per un anno e tutti obbediscono a quello solo e non c’è in loro invidia né gelosia.
17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.	17 Giuda pertanto scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Acco, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma a stringere amicizia e alleanza,
18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.	18 per liberarsi dal giogo, perché vedevano che il regno dei Greci riduceva Israele in schiavitù.
19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:	19 Andarono fino a Roma con viaggio lunghissimo, entrarono nel Senato e incominciarono a dire:
20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."	20 «Giuda, chiamato anche Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a voi, per concludere con voi alleanza e pace e per essere iscritti tra i vostri alleati e amici».
21 The proposal pleased the Romans,	21 Piacque loro la proposta.
22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:	22 Questa è la copia della lettera che trascrissero su tavolette di bronzo e inviarono a Gerusalemme, perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e alleanza per i Giudei:
23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.	23 «Ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, prosperità per mare e per terra, sempre! Lontano da loro la spada nemica!
24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,	24 Se verrà mossa guerra, contro Roma anzitutto, o contro uno qualsiasi dei suoi alleati in tutto il suo dominio,
25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;	25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco con piena lealtà, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;
26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.	26 ai nemici non forniranno né procureranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno i loro impegni senza compenso.
27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,	27 Allo stesso modo, se capiterà prima una guerra alla nazione dei Giudei, combatteranno con loro i Romani con tutto l’animo, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;
28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.	28 ai nemici non forniranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.
29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.	29 In questi termini i Romani hanno stabilito un’alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.
30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.	30 Se dopo queste decisioni vorranno gli uni o gli altri aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo e quanto avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà vincolante.
31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?	31 Riguardo poi ai mali che il re Demetrio compie ai loro danni, gli abbiamo scritto: “Perché aggravi il giogo sui Giudei, nostri amici e alleati?
32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"	32 Se dunque si appelleranno contro di te, difenderemo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra”».
