1 Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans. They were valiant fighters and acted amiably to all who took their side. They established a friendly alliance with all who applied to them.	1 Entre tanto, la fama de los romanos llegó a oídos de Judas: supo que eran guerreros valerosos, se mostraban benévolos con todos sus aliados y entablaban amistad con todos los que acudían a ellos; sobre todo, se enteró de que eran guerreros valerosos.
2 He was also told of their battles and the brave deeds that they had performed against the Gauls, conquering them and forcing them to pay tribute.	2 Le habían contado, en efecto, sus campañas y las proezas que habían realizado entre los galos, dominándolos y sometiéndolos a tributo,
3 They had gotten possession of the silver and gold mines in Spain,	3 como así también todo lo que habían hecho en la región de España, para adueñarse de las minas de plata y de oro que hay allí,
4 and by planning and persistence had conquered the whole country, although it was very remote from their own. They had crushed the kings who had come against them from the far corners of the earth and had inflicted on them severe defeat, and the rest paid tribute to them every year.	4 y cómo gracias a su habilidad y constancia, se habían apoderado de todo el territorio, a pesar de ser un lugar muy distante. Asimismo, a los reyes que habían venido a combatirlos desde los confines de la tierra, los habían derrotado, aplastándolos completamente, mientras que los restantes les pagaban tributo cada año.
5 Philip and Perseus, king of the Macedonians, and the others who opposed them in battle had been overwhelmed and subjugated.	5 Ellos habían derrotado y sometido a Filipo y a Perseo, reyes de Quitím, y a cuantos se les opusieron.
6 Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had fought against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very great army, had been defeated by them.	6 También habían vencido a Antíoco el Grande, rey de Asia, que les había hecho la guerra con ciento veinte elefantes, con caballos, carros y un ejército muy numeroso:
7 They had taken him alive and obliged him and the kings who succeeded him to pay a heavy tribute, to give hostages and a section of	7 lo tomaron prisionero y le impusieron, a él y a sus sucesores, un fuerte tributo, además de la entrega de rehenes y la cesión
8 Lycia, Mysia, and Lydia from among their best provinces. The Romans took these from him and gave them to King Eumenes.	8 de sus mejores provincias –la región de la India, Media y Lidia– que luego entregaron al rey Eumenes.
9 When the men of Greece had planned to come and destroy them,	9 Los de Grecia habían pensado ir a exterminarlos,
10 the Romans discovered it, and sent against the Greeks a single general who made war on them. Many were wounded and fell, and the Romans took their wives and children captive. They plundered them, took possession of their land, tore down their strongholds and reduced them to slavery even to this day.	10 pero los romanos, al enterarse, habían enviado contra ellos a un solo general para combatirlos: así mataron a muchos de ellos, llevaron prisioneros a sus mujeres y sus niños, saquearon sus bienes, sometieron al país, arrasaron sus fortalezas y les impusieron su dominio hasta el día de hoy.
11 All the other kingdoms and islands that had ever opposed them they destroyed and enslaved;	11 También destruyeron y sometieron a los demás reinos y a las islas que alguna vez les opusieron resistencia.
12 with their friends, however, and those who relied on them, they maintained friendship. They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them.	12 En cambio, mantuvieron su amistad con sus aliados y con todos los que buscaron su apoyo. Tienen bajo su dominio a los reyes vecinos y lejanos y son temidos por todos los que oyen en hablar de ellos.
13 In truth, those whom they desired to help to a kingdom became kings, and those whom they wished to depose they deposed; and they were greatly exalted.	13 Sólo reinan los que ellos quieren ayudar a reinar, y deponen a los que quieren. Están en el apogeo de su poder.
14 Yet with all this, none of them put on a crown or wore purple as a display of grandeur.	14 Sin embargo, ninguno de ellos se ciñe la corona ni se reviste de púrpura para engrandecerse.
15 They had made for themselves a senate house, and every day three hundred and twenty men took counsel, deliberating on all that concerned the people and their well-being.	15 Antes bien, han creado un Senado, donde cada día sesionan trescientos veinte senadores, que deliberan constantemente sobre los asuntos del pueblo, a fin de asegurar el orden público.
16 They entrusted their government to one man every year, to rule over their entire country, and they all obeyed that one, and there was no envy or jealousy among them.	16 Cada año confían a un solo hombre el poder y el dominio sobre toda la nación, y todos le obedecen, sin que haya entre ellos envidias ni celos.
17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them.	17 Judas eligió a Eupólemo, hijo de Juan, hijo de Hacós, y a Jasón, hijo de Eleazar, y los envió a Roma para concertar un pacto de amistad,
18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery.	18 con el fin de librarse del yugo, porque veían que los griegos tenían esclavizado a Israel.
19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows:	19 Ellos partieron para Roma y, después de un larguísimo viaje, se presentaron ante el Senado y dijeron:
20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends."	20 «Judas, llamado Macabeo, sus hermanos y el Pueblo judío nos han enviado para concertar con ustedes un pacto de paz y para que nos inscriban en el número de sus aliados y amigos».
21 The proposal pleased the Romans,	21 La propuesta agradó a los romanos.
22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance:	22 Y esta es la copia del documento que grabaron en planchas de bronce y enviaron a Jerusalén como memorial de paz y de alianza:
23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them.	23 «¡Que los romanos y la nación de los judíos tengan felicidad en el mar y en la tierra para siempre! ¡Lejos de ellos la espada y el enemigo!
24 But if war is first made on Rome, or any of its allies in any of their dominions,	24 Si una guerra amenaza primero a Roma, o a cualquiera de sus aliados, en cualquier parte de sus dominios,
25 the Jewish nation will help them wholeheartedly, as the occasion shall demand;	25 la nación de los judíos luchará a su lado de todo corazón según se lo exijan las circunstancias.
26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense.	26 Los enemigos no recibirán trigo, ni armas, ni dinero, ni naves. Así lo ha establecido Roma. Observarán sus compromisos sin ninguna compensación.
27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand,	27 De la misma manera, si una guerra amenaza primero a la nación de los judíos, los romanos lucharán a su lado, con toda el alma según se lo exijan las circunstancias.
28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception.	28 Sus agresores no recibirán trigo, ni armas, ni dinero, ni naves. Así lo ha establecido Roma. Observarán sus compromisos con lealtad».
29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people.	29 Estas son las cláusulas que los romanos estipularon con el Pueblo judío.
30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid.	30 «Si posteriormente unos y otros deciden añadir o quitar algo, lo harán de común acuerdo, y lo que añadan o quiten tendrá fuerza obligatoria».
31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?	31 Con relación a los males que el rey Demetrio ha causado a los judíos, ya le hemos escrito lo siguiente: «¿Por qué has hecho sentir pesadamente tu yugo sobre los judíos, nuestros amigos y aliados?
32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'"	32 Si vuelven a quejarse de ti, nosotros les haremos justicia y te haremos la guerra por mar y por tierra».
