LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
και ηκουσαν οι υιοι ισραηλ οι κατοικουντες εν τη ιουδαια παντα οσα εποιησεν ολοφερνης τοις εθνεσιν ο αρχιστρατηγος ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεως ασσυριων και ον τροπον εσκυλευσεν παντα τα ιερα αυτων και εδωκεν αυτα εις αφανισμον1 When the Israelites who dwelt in Judea heard of all that Holofernes, commander-in-chief of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the Assyrians, had done to the nations, and how he had despoiled all their temples and destroyed them,
και εφοβηθησαν σφοδρα σφοδρα απο προσωπου αυτου και περι ιερουσαλημ και του ναου κυριου θεου αυτων εταραχθησαν2 they were in extreme dread of him, and greatly alarmed for Jerusalem and the temple of the Lord, their God.
οτι προσφατως ησαν αναβεβηκοτες εκ της αιχμαλωσιας και νεωστι πας ο λαος συνελελεκτο της ιουδαιας και τα σκευη και το θυσιαστηριον και ο οικος εκ της βεβηλωσεως ηγιασμενα ην3 Now, they had lately returned from exile, and only recently had all the people of Judea been gathered together, and the vessels, the altar, and the temple been purified from profanation.
και απεστειλαν εις παν οριον σαμαρειας και κωνα και βαιθωρων και βελμαιν και ιεριχω και εις χωβα και αισωρα και τον αυλωνα σαλημ4 So they sent word to the whole region of Samaria, to Kona, Beth-horon, Belmain, and Jericho, to Choba and Aesora, and to the valley of Salem.
και προκατελαβοντο πασας τας κορυφας των ορεων των υψηλων και ετειχισαν τας εν αυτοις κωμας και παρεθεντο εις επισιτισμον εις παρασκευην πολεμου οτι προσφατως ην τα πεδια αυτων τεθερισμενα5 The people there posted guards on all the summits of the high mountains, fortified their villages, and since their fields had recently been harvested, stored up provisions in preparation for war.
και εγραψεν ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας ος ην εν ταις ημεραις εν ιερουσαλημ τοις κατοικουσι βαιτυλουα και βαιτομεσθαιμ η εστιν απεναντι εσδρηλων κατα προσωπον του πεδιου του πλησιον δωθαιμ6 Joakim, who was high priest in Jerusalem in those days, wrote to the inhabitants of Bethulia (and Betomesthaim), which is on the way to Esdraelon, facing the plain near Dothan,
λεγων διακατασχειν τας αναβασεις της ορεινης οτι δι' αυτων ην η εισοδος εις την ιουδαιαν και ην ευχερως διακωλυσαι αυτους προσβαινοντας στενης της προσβασεως ουσης επ' ανδρας τους παντας δυο7 and instructed them to keep firm hold of the mountain passes, since these offered access to Judea. It would be easy to ward off the attacking forces, as the defile was only wide enough for two abreast.
και εποιησαν οι υιοι ισραηλ καθα συνεταξεν αυτοις ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας και η γερουσια παντος δημου ισραηλ οι εκαθηντο εν ιερουσαλημ8 The Israelites carried out the orders given them by Joakim, the high priest, and the senate of the whole people of Israel, which met in Jerusalem.
και ανεβοησαν πας ανηρ ισραηλ προς τον θεον εν εκτενεια μεγαλη και εταπεινωσαν τας ψυχας αυτων εν εκτενεια μεγαλη9 All the men of Israel cried to God with great fervor and did penance--
αυτοι και αι γυναικες αυτων και τα νηπια αυτων και τα κτηνη αυτων και πας παροικος και μισθωτος και αργυρωνητος αυτων επεθεντο σακκους επι τας οσφυας αυτων10 they, along with their wives, and children, and domestic animals. All their resident aliens, hired laborers, and slaves also girded themselves with sackcloth.
και πας ανηρ ισραηλ και γυνη και τα παιδια οι κατοικουντες εν ιερουσαλημ επεσον κατα προσωπον του ναου και εσποδωσαντο τας κεφαλας αυτων και εξετειναν τους σακκους αυτων κατα προσωπον κυριου11 And all the Israelite men, women and children who lived in Jerusalem prostrated themselves in front of the temple building, with ashes strewn on their heads, displaying their sackcloth covering before the Lord.
και το θυσιαστηριον σακκω περιεβαλον και εβοησαν προς τον θεον ισραηλ ομοθυμαδον εκτενως του μη δουναι εις διαρπαγην τα νηπια αυτων και τας γυναικας εις προνομην και τας πολεις της κληρονομιας αυτων εις αφανισμον και τα αγια εις βεβηλωσιν και ονειδισμον επιχαρμα τοις εθνεσιν12 The altar, too, they draped in sackcloth; and with one accord they cried out fervently to the God of Israel not to allow their children to be seized, their wives to be taken captive, the cities of their inheritance to be ruined, or the sanctuary to be profaned and mocked for the nations to gloat over.
και εισηκουσεν κυριος της φωνης αυτων και εισειδεν την θλιψιν αυτων και ην ο λαος νηστευων ημερας πλειους εν παση τη ιουδαια και ιερουσαλημ κατα προσωπον των αγιων κυριου παντοκρατορος13 The Lord heard their cry and had regard for their distress. For the people observed a fast of many days' duration throughout Judea, and before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty in Jerusalem.
και ιωακιμ ο ιερευς ο μεγας και παντες οι παρεστηκοτες ενωπιον κυριου ιερεις και οι λειτουργουντες κυριω σακκους περιεζωσμενοι τας οσφυας αυτων προσεφερον την ολοκαυτωσιν του ενδελεχισμου και τας ευχας και τα εκουσια δοματα του λαου14 The high priest Joakim, and all the priests in attendance on the Lord who served his altar, were also girded with sackcloth as they offered the daily holocaust, the votive offerings, and the freewill offerings of the people.
και ην σποδος επι τας κιδαρεις αυτων και εβοων προς κυριον εκ πασης δυναμεως εις αγαθον επισκεψασθαι παν οικον ισραηλ15 With ashes upon their turbans, they cried to the Lord with all their strength to look with favor on the whole house of Israel.
