LXXNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
και εστη διαβολος εν τω ισραηλ και επεσεισεν τον δαυιδ του αριθμησαι τον ισραηλ1 A satan rose up against Israel, and he enticed David into taking a census of Israel.
και ειπεν ο βασιλευς δαυιδ προς ιωαβ και προς τους αρχοντας της δυναμεως πορευθητε αριθμησατε τον ισραηλ απο βηρσαβεε και εως δαν και ενεγκατε προς με και γνωσομαι τον αριθμον αυτων2 David therefore said to Joab and to the other generals of the army, "Go, find out the number of the Israelites from Beer-sheba to Dan, and report back to me that I may know their number."
και ειπεν ιωαβ προσθειη κυριος επι τον λαον αυτου ως αυτοι εκατονταπλασιως και οι οφθαλμοι κυριου μου του βασιλεως βλεποντες παντες τω κυριω μου παιδες ινα τι ζητει ο κυριος μου τουτο ινα μη γενηται εις αμαρτιαν τω ισραηλ3 But Joab replied: "May the LORD increase his people a hundredfold! My lord king, are not all of them my lord's subjects? Why does my lord seek to do this thing? Why will he bring guilt upon Israel?"
το δε ρημα του βασιλεως εκραταιωθη επι τω ιωαβ και εξηλθεν ιωαβ και διηλθεν εν παντι οριω ισραηλ και ηλθεν εις ιερουσαλημ4 However, the king's command prevailed over Joab, who departed and traversed all of Israel, and then returned to Jerusalem.
και εδωκεν ιωαβ τον αριθμον της επισκεψεως του λαου τω δαυιδ και ην πας ισραηλ χιλιαι χιλιαδες και εκατον χιλιαδες ανδρων εσπασμενων μαχαιραν και ιουδας τετρακοσιαι και ογδοηκοντα χιλιαδες ανδρων εσπασμενων μαχαιραν5 Joab reported the result of the census to David: of men capable of wielding a sword, there were in all Israel one million one hundred thousand, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand.
και τον λευι και τον βενιαμιν ουκ ηριθμησεν εν μεσω αυτων οτι κατισχυσεν λογος του βασιλεως τον ιωαβ6 Levi and Benjamin, however, he did not include in the census, for the king's command was repugnant to Joab.
και πονηρον εφανη εναντιον του θεου περι του πραγματος τουτου και επαταξεν τον ισραηλ7 This command displeased God, who began to punish Israel.
και ειπεν δαυιδ προς τον θεον ημαρτηκα σφοδρα οτι εποιησα το πραγμα τουτο και νυν περιελε δη την κακιαν παιδος σου οτι εματαιωθην σφοδρα8 Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in doing this thing. Take away your servant's guilt, for I have acted very foolishly."
και ελαλησεν κυριος προς γαδ ορωντα δαυιδ λεγων9 Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, in these words:
πορευου και λαλησον προς δαυιδ λεγων ουτως λεγει κυριος τρια αιρω εγω επι σε εκλεξαι σεαυτω εν εξ αυτων και ποιησω σοι10 "Go, tell David: Thus says the LORD: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you."
και ηλθεν γαδ προς δαυιδ και ειπεν αυτω ουτως λεγει κυριος εκλεξαι σεαυτω11 Accordingly, Gad went to David and said to him; "Thus says the LORD: Decide now--
η τρια ετη λιμου η τρεις μηνας φευγειν σε εκ προσωπου εχθρων σου και μαχαιραν εχθρων σου του εξολεθρευσαι η τρεις ημερας ρομφαιαν κυριου και θανατον εν τη γη και αγγελος κυριου εξολεθρευων εν παση κληρονομια ισραηλ και νυν ιδε τι αποκριθω τω αποστειλαντι με λογον12 will it be three years of famine; or three months of fleeing your enemies, with the sword of your foes ever at your back; or three days of the LORD'S own sword, a pestilence in the land, with the LORD'S destroying angel in every part of Israel? Therefore choose: What answer am I to give him who sent me?"
και ειπεν δαυιδ προς γαδ στενα μοι και τα τρια σφοδρα εμπεσουμαι δη εις χειρας κυριου οτι πολλοι οι οικτιρμοι αυτου σφοδρα και εις χειρας ανθρωπων ου μη εμπεσω13 Then David said to Gad: "I am in dire straits. But I prefer to fall into the hand of the LORD, whose mercy is very great, than into the hands of men."
και εδωκεν κυριος θανατον εν ισραηλ και επεσον εξ ισραηλ εβδομηκοντα χιλιαδες ανδρων14 Therefore the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel died.
και απεστειλεν ο θεος αγγελον εις ιερουσαλημ του εξολεθρευσαι αυτην και ως εξωλεθρευσεν ειδεν κυριος και μετεμεληθη επι τη κακια και ειπεν τω αγγελω τω εξολεθρευοντι ικανουσθω σοι ανες την χειρα σου και ο αγγελος κυριου εστως εν τω αλω ορνα του ιεβουσαιου15 God also sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem; but as he was on the point of destroying it, the LORD saw and decided against the calamity, and said to the destroying angel, "Enough now! Stay your hand!"The angel of the LORD was then standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
και επηρεν δαυιδ τους οφθαλμους αυτου και ειδεν τον αγγελον κυριου εστωτα ανα μεσον της γης και ανα μεσον του ουρανου και η ρομφαια αυτου εσπασμενη εν τη χειρι αυτου εκτεταμενη επι ιερουσαλημ και επεσεν δαυιδ και οι πρεσβυτεροι περιβεβλημενοι εν σακκοις επι προσωπον αυτων16 When David raised his eyes, he saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with a naked sword in his hand stretched out against Jerusalem. David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, prostrated themselves face to the ground,
και ειπεν δαυιδ προς τον θεον ουκ εγω ειπα του αριθμησαι εν τω λαω και εγω ειμι ο αμαρτων κακοποιων εκακοποιησα και ταυτα τα προβατα τι εποιησαν κυριε ο θεος γενηθητω η χειρ σου εν εμοι και εν τω οικω του πατρος μου και μη εν τω λαω σου εις απωλειαν κυριε17 and David prayed to God: "Was it not I who ordered the census of the people? I am the one who sinned, I did this wicked thing. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD, my God, strike me and my father's family, but do not afflict your people with this plague!"
και αγγελος κυριου ειπεν τω γαδ του ειπειν προς δαυιδ ινα αναβη του στησαι θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω εν αλω ορνα του ιεβουσαιου18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to tell David to go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
και ανεβη δαυιδ κατα τον λογον γαδ ον ελαλησεν εν ονοματι κυριου19 David went up at Gad's command, given in the name of the LORD.
και επεστρεψεν ορνα και ειδεν τον βασιλεα και τεσσαρες υιοι αυτου μετ' αυτου μεθαχαβιν και ορνα ην αλοων πυρους20 While Ornan was threshing wheat, he turned around and saw the king, and his four sons who were with him, without recognizing them.
και ηλθεν δαυιδ προς ορναν και ορνα εξηλθεν εκ της αλω και προσεκυνησεν τω δαυιδ τω προσωπω επι την γην21 But as David came on toward him, he looked up and saw that it was David. Then he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David, his face to the ground.
και ειπεν δαυιδ προς ορνα δος μοι τον τοπον σου της αλω και οικοδομησω επ' αυτω θυσιαστηριον τω κυριω εν αργυριω αξιω δος μοι αυτον και παυσεται η πληγη εκ του λαου22 David said to Ornan: "Sell me the ground of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD. Sell it to me at its full price, that the plague may be stayed from the people."
και ειπεν ορνα προς δαυιδ λαβε σεαυτω και ποιησατω ο κυριος μου ο βασιλευς το αγαθον εναντιον αυτου ιδε δεδωκα τους μοσχους εις ολοκαυτωσιν και το αροτρον και τας αμαξας εις ξυλα και τον σιτον εις θυσιαν τα παντα δεδωκα23 But Ornan said to David: "Take it as your own, and let my lord the king do what seems best to him. See, I also give you the oxen for the holocausts, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the cereal offering. I give it all to you."
και ειπεν ο βασιλευς δαυιδ τω ορνα ουχι οτι αγοραζων αγοραζω εν αργυριω αξιω οτι ου μη λαβω α εστιν σοι κυριω του ανενεγκαι ολοκαυτωσιν δωρεαν κυριω24 But King David replied to Ornan: "No! I will buy it from you properly, at its full price. I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer up holocausts that cost me nothing."
και εδωκεν δαυιδ τω ορνα εν τω τοπω αυτου σικλους χρυσιου ολκης εξακοσιους25 So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold for the place.
και ωκοδομησεν δαυιδ εκει θυσιαστηριον κυριω και ανηνεγκεν ολοκαυτωματα και σωτηριου και εβοησεν προς κυριον και επηκουσεν αυτω εν πυρι εκ του ουρανου επι το θυσιαστηριον της ολοκαυτωσεως και καταναλωσεν την ολοκαυτωσιν26 David then built an altar there to the LORD, and offered up holocausts and peace offerings. When he called upon the LORD, he answered him by sending down fire from heaven upon the altar of holocausts.
και ειπεν κυριος προς τον αγγελον και κατεθηκεν την ρομφαιαν εις τον κολεον27 Then the LORD gave orders to the angel to return his sword to its sheath.
εν τω καιρω εκεινω εν τω ιδειν τον δαυιδ οτι επηκουσεν αυτω κυριος εν τω αλω ορνα του ιεβουσαιου και εθυσιασεν εκει28 Once David saw that the LORD had heard him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he continued to offer sacrifices there.
και σκηνη κυριου ην εποιησεν μωυσης εν τη ερημω και θυσιαστηριον των ολοκαυτωματων εν τω καιρω εκεινω εν βαμα εν γαβαων29 The Dwelling of the LORD, which Moses had built in the desert, and the altar of holocausts were at that time on the high place at Gibeon.
και ουκ ηδυνατο δαυιδ του πορευθηναι εμπροσθεν αυτου του ζητησαι τον θεον οτι κατεσπευσεν απο προσωπου της ρομφαιας αγγελου κυριου30 But David could not go there to worship God, for he was fearful of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
