1 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,	1 Dico la verità in Cristo, non mentisco, e la mia coscienza me lo attesta in unione con lo Spirito Santo:
2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.	2 ho un grande dolore, un travaglio continuo nel mio cuore.
3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:	3 Desidererei infatti essere votato alla maledizione divina ed essere, io personalmente, separato da Cristo in favore dei miei fratelli, che sono della mia stessa stirpe secondo la carne.
4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;	4 Essi sono Israeliti, loro è l'adozione a figli, la gloria, le alleanze, a loro è stata data la legge, il culto, le promesse,
5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.	5 i patriarchi, da loro proviene Cristo secondo la sua natura umana, egli che domina tutto, è Dio, benedetto nei secoli, amen!
6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:	6 Non che sia caduta invano la parola di Dio. Infatti non tutti quelli che discendono da Israele sono Israele.
7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.	7 Né per il fatto che discendono da Abramo sono tutti figli suoi, ma: In Isacco sarà la tua discendenza.
8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.	8 Cioè: non i figli della carne sono figli di Dio; ma i figli della promessa saranno computati come discendenza.
9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.	9 E la promessa suona così: In questo tempo ritornerò e Sara avrà un figlio.
10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;	10 Ma non solo: anche Rebecca ebbe prole da uno solo, Isacco padre nostro.
11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)	11 Quando ancora non erano nati e non avevano compiuto niente di bene o di male -- in modo che la predeterminazione di Dio rimanesse secondo la sua scelta
12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.	12 e non dipendesse dalle opere ma dall'iniziativa di colui che chiama -- fu detto a lei: Il maggiore servirà al minore.
13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.	13 Come è stato scritto: Amai Giacobbe, odiai Esaù.
14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.	14 Che diremo dunque? C'è forse ingiustizia davanti a Dio? Non sia mai detto!
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.	15 Dice infatti a Mosè: Farò misericordia a chi voglio fare misericordia, avrò pietà di chi voglio avere pietà.
16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.	16 Cosicché l'iniziativa non è dell'uomo che vuole o che corre, ma di Dio che usa misericordia.
17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.	17 Dice infatti la Scrittura al faraone: Proprio per questo ti ho innalzato, per manifestare in te la mia potenza e affinché il mio nome sia annunziato in tutta la terra.
18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.	18 Dunque usa misericordia con chi vuole e indura chi vuole.
19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?	19 Mi dirai allora: "Perché ancora biasima? Chi mai, infatti, si può opporre alla sua volontà?".
20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?	20 Ma piuttosto: chi sei mai tu, o uomo, che ti metti in contraddittorio con Dio? Dirà forse l'oggetto plasmato a colui che lo plasmò: perché mi facesti così?
21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?	21 O non ha forse il vasaio piena disponibilità sull'argilla, così da fare della stessa massa argillosa un vaso destinato a un uso onorifico e un vaso destinato a un uso banale?
22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:	22 Se Dio, volendo mostrare la sua collera e far conoscere ciò di cui è capace, sopportò con molta longanimità vasi d'ira approntati per la perdizione,
23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,	23 allo scopo di far conoscere la ricchezza della sua gloria in vasi di misericordia che preparò per la gloria,
24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?	24 tra cui ha chiamato anche noi, non solo dal popolo giudaico ma anche dai pagani... (non lo poteva forse fare?).
25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.	25 Come dice anche in Osea: Chiamerò quello che non è popolo, popolo mio, e quella che non è amata, amata,
26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.	26 e avverrà che nel luogo stesso dove fu detto loro: voi non siete mio popolo, là saranno chiamati figli del Dio vivente.
27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:	27 E Isaia proclama a proposito di Israele: Anche se fosse il numero dei figli d'Israele come la sabbia del mare, solo un resto sarà salvato.
28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.	28 Il Signore infatti realizzerà la sua parola sulla terra, facendo giungere il compimento e abbreviando il tempo.
29 And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.	29 E come ha predetto Isaia: Se il Dio degli eserciti non ci avesse lasciato un germe, saremmo divenuti come Sodoma, saremmo stati simili a Gomorra.
30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.	30 Che diremo dunque? Che i pagani che non perseguivano la giustificazione si sono impadroniti della giustificazione, della giustificazione che deriva dalla fede.
31 But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.	31 Israele, invece, che ha perseguito una legge di giustificazione, non è arrivato alla legge.
32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;	32 Perché mai? Perché non l'hanno cercata dalla fede, ma dalle opere. Inciamparono nella pietra di scandalo,
33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.	33 come sta scritto: Ecco, pongo in Sion una pietra d'inciampo e di scandalo, e chi crederà in essa non rimarrà svergognato.
