1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;	1 Voici des Proverbes de Salomon, fils de David, roi d’Israël,
2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;	2 pour vous faire acquérir sagesse et instruction, et pénétrer les mots qui ouvrent l’intelligence,
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;	3 pour vous donner des leçons de bon sens, pour que vous deveniez justes, honnêtes et loyaux.
4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.	4 Les gens simples apprendront à bien juger, les jeunes s’instruiront, leur esprit s’ouvrira.
5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:	5 1:6 Ils pénétreront les proverbes et les dictons, les paroles des sages et leurs énigmes.
6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.	6 1:5 Que le sage écoute, il gagnera en savoir; l’homme intelligent saura diriger les autres.
7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.	7 Le début du savoir, c’est la crainte de Yahvé; seuls les sots méprisent sagesse et discipline.
8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:	8 Écoute, mon fils, les avis de ton père, ne rejette pas les avertissements de ta mère:
9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.	9 tu as là une belle couronne pour ta tête, un collier pour ton cou.
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.	10 Mon fils, si des pécheurs veulent t’entraîner au mal, ne les suis pas!
11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:	11 Ils te diront peut-être: “Viens avec nous, nous attendrons le bon moment - et c’est pour tuer! Nous tendrons un piège, un piège à l’innocent qui ne l’a pas mérité!
12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:	12 Nous n’en ferons qu’une bouchée, comme fait le Séjour des Morts, nous tomberons sur eux comme la mort.
13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:	13 Nous mettrons la main sur des tas de choses de valeur, nous remplirons nos maisons de notre butin.
14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:	14 Toi aussi, tu en auras ta part, car nous mettrons tout en commun.”
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:	15 Mon fils, ne fais pas route avec eux, ne marche pas sur leurs chemins.
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.	16 Vois comme leurs pieds courent vers le mal, comme ils ont vite fait de verser le sang!
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.	17 Les oiseaux ne se prendront pas à ton filet si tu l’as tendu sous leurs yeux,
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.	18 mais eux, c’est leur propre vie qu’ils mettent en jeu, c’est à eux-mêmes qu’ils se tendent des pièges.
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.	19 C’est ainsi que finira tout homme qui vit de rapines: un jour la rapine lui prendra sa vie.
20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:	20 La Sagesse crie par les rues, elle élève la voix sur les places.
21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,	21 Elle lance un appel aux carrefours, elle dit son message aux portes de la ville:
22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?	22 “Combien de temps encore, gens insignifiants, aimerez-vous vos sottises? Combien de temps encore les moqueurs s’amuseront-ils avec leurs moqueries, et les gens stupides refuseront-ils de savoir?
23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.	23 Écoutez donc mes avertissements en ce moment où je vous ouvre mon cœur et je vous fais connaître mes pensées.
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;	24 Allez-vous refuser quand je vous appelle, ne pas faire attention quand je vous tends la main?
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:	25 Voulez-vous négliger tous mes conseils et repousser mes avis?
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;	26 À mon tour je rirai de votre détresse, je me moquerai lorsque la peur vous saisira,
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.	27 lorsque le jour du malheur fondra sur vous: il viendra comme une tornade, vous serez pris dans le tourbillon fatal et resterez sous le poids de la détresse et l’angoisse.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:	28 Alors on m’appellera et je ne répondrai pas; on me cherchera et on ne me trouvera pas.
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:	29 C’est qu’on n’avait pas voulu du savoir, on n’avait pas choisi la crainte de Yahvé;
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.	30 ces gens-là ne cherchaient pas mes conseils, ils avaient méprisé tous mes avertissements.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.	31 Mais ils mangeront les fruits de leurs entreprises, ils pourront se repaître de leurs initiatives.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.	32 Car le refus de la sagesse mène les sots à la mort, l’insouciance des têtes en l’air fera leur perte.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.	33 Mais celui qui m’écoute dormira en paix, il n’aura pas à craindre le malheur.
