1 When these covenants were made, Lysias went unto the king, and the Jews were about their husbandry.	1 Concluído este tratado, voltou Lisias para o rei, e os Judeus ocupavam-se em cultivar as terras.
2 But of the governours of several places, Timotheus, and Apollonius the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and beside them Nicanor the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to be quiet and live in peace.	2 Mas aqueles que tinham ficado (no pais), (a saber), Timóteo e Apolónio, filho de Jeneu, como também Jerónimo e Demefonte, juntamente com Nicanor, governador de Chipre, não os deixavam viver em paz nem em sossego.
3 The men of Joppa also did such an ungodly deed: they prayed the Jews that dwelt among them to go with their wives and children into the boats which they had prepared, as though they had meant them no hurt.	3 Entretanto os habitantes de Joje cometeram o seguinte crime: Convidaram os Judeus, com quem habitavam, a que, com suas mulheres e filhos, se metessem numa barcas que tinham preparado, como se não houvesse entre eles inimizade alguma,
4 Who accepted of it according to the common decree of the city, as being desirous to live in peace, and suspecting nothing: but when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no less than two hundred of them.	4 mas, na realidade, agiam em virtude duma decisão tomada em comum pela cidade. Tendo (os Judeus) condescendido com isso, como pessoas pacíficas, sem a menor suspeita, quando chegaram ao mar alto, foram afogados pelo menos duzentos.
5 When Judas heard of this cruelty done unto his countrymen, he commanded those that were with him to make them ready.	5 Judas, logo que soube desta crueldade cometida contra a gente da sua nação, mandou aos que estavam com ele (que tomassem as armas) e, depois de ter invocado a Deus, justo Juiz,
6 And calling upon God the righteous Judge, he came against those murderers of his brethren, and burnt the haven by night, and set the boats on fire, and those that fled thither he slew.	6 marchou contra estes homicidas de seus irmãos, queimou de noite o porto, queimou as barcas e fez passar ao fio da espada os que ali se tinham refugiado.
7 And when the town was shut up, he went backward, as if he would return to root out all them of the city of Joppa.	7 Como a praça se lhe tinha fechado, retirou-se com tenção de lá tornar e de exterminar todos os habitantes de Jope.
8 But when he heard that the Jamnites were minded to do in like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them,	8 Mas, tendo sabido que também os de Jâmnia queriam fazer do mesmo modo aos Judeus que viviam entre eles,
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set fire on the haven and the navy, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and forty furlongs off.	9 surpreendeu igualmente de noite os Jamnitas e queimou-lhes o porto com as suas embarcações, de sorte que o clarão do fogo se via em Jerusalém, ficando ela à distância de duzentos e quarenta estádios.
10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus, no fewer than five thousand men on foot and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians set upon him.	10 Quando tinha já andado nove estádios, avançando contra Timóteo, atacaram-no os Árabes, em número de cinco mil infantes e quinhentos cavaleiros.
11 Whereupon there was a very sore battle; but Judas' side by the help of God got the victory; so that the Nomades of Arabia, being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising both to give him cattle, and to pleasure him otherwise.	11 Travou-se um rijo combate, com bom sucesso para as tropas de Judas, por auxílio de Deus. Os Árabes, vendo-se vencidos, pediam a Judas que se compusesse com eles, prometendo que Ihe dariam gado e lhe assistiriam em tudo o mais.
12 Then Judas, thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things, granted them peace: whereupon they shook hands, and so they departed to their tents.	12 Judas, crendo que eles efectivamente lhe podiam ser úteis em muitas coisas, prometeu-lhes a paz. Concluído o tratado, os Árabes voltaram para as suas tendas.
13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city, which was fenced about with walls, and inhabited by people of divers countries; and the name of it was Caspis.	13 Atacou ainda uma cidade forte, chamada Caspin, cercada de muros, na qual habitava uma mistura de diversas nações.
14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals, that they behaved themselves rudely toward them that were with Judas, railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.	14 Os que estavam dentro, confiados na firmeza dos seus muros e na provisão que tinham de víveres, insultavam os de Judas com ditos grosseiros e proferiam blasfêmias e palavras ímpias.
15 Wherefore Judas with his company, calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without rams or engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua, gave a fierce assault against the walls,	15 Os de Judas, invocado o grande Senhor do mundo, que, sem aríetes nem máquinas de guerra, no tempo de Josué instantâneamente derribou Jericó, assaltaram furiosamente as muralhas.
16 And took the city by the will of God, and made unspeakable slaughters, insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoining thereunto, being filled full, was seen running with blood.	16 Quando tomaram a cidade, pela vontade do Senhor, fizeram nela uma horrorosa carnificina, de sorte que um tanque que estava ao pé, de dois estádios de largo, parecia cheio de sangue dos mortos.
17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni.	17 Dali caminharam setecentos e cinquenta estádios e chegaram a Caraca, onde habitavam os Judeus, chamados Tubianeus.
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in the places: for before he had dispatched any thing, he departed from thence, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold.	18 Não puderam haver ás mãos Timóteo naqueles lugares, porque, como não tinha conseguido fazer ali nada, voltou para trás, deixando em certo sitio uma fortíssima guarnição.
19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater, who were of Maccabeus' captains, went forth, and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress, above ten thousand men.	19 Mas Doslteu e Sosípatro, generais de Macabeu, mataram mais de dez mil homens que Timóteo tinha deixado para guarda daquela praça.
20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands, and set them over the bands, and went against Timotheus, who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot, and two thousand and five hundred horsemen.	20 Entretanto Macabeu, ordenado e repartido o seu exército em coortes, deu a estes dois generais o seu comando e marchou contra Timóteo, que tinha consigo cento e vinte mil infantes, e dois mil e quinhentos cavaleiros.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas' coming, he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion: for the town was hard to besiege, and uneasy to come unto, by reason of the straitness of all the places.	21 Timóteo, logo que teve conhecimento da chegada de Judas, mandou adiante as mulheres, as crianças e os seus haveres, para um lugar chamado Carnion, porque era inexpugnável e de difícil entrada, por causa dos desfiladeiros da região.
22 But when Judas his first band came in sight, the enemies, being smitten with fear and terror through the appearing of him who seeth all things, fled amain, one running into this way, another that way, so as that they were often hurt of their own men, and wounded with the points of their own swords.	22 Logo que apareceu a primeira coorte de Judas, ficaram os inimigos passados de medo, porque o poder de Deus, que vê todas as coisas, se lhes manifestava de forma assustadora, e tomaram a fuga desordenadamente, de sorte que mutuamente se feriam e transpassavam com as próprias espadas.
23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them, killing those wicked wretches, of whom he slew about thirty thousand men.	23 Judas carregava sobre eles com grande vigor, castigando estes criminosos até fazer cair mortos no campo trinta mil homens.
24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Sosipater, whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life, because he had many of the Jews' parents, and the brethren of some of them, who, if they put him to death, should not be regarded.	24 O mesmo Timóteo caiu nas mãos de Dositeu e de Sosípatro, aos quais pediu com grandes instâncias que o deixassem ir com vida, porque tinha feito prisioneiros muitos pais e muitos irmãos dos Judeus, os quais pela sua morte perderiam a esperança (de cobrar a liberdade).
25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt, according to the agreement, they let him go for the saving of their brethren.	25 Tendo-lhes dado palavra que restituiria estes prisioneiros, sem lhes fazer mal algum, deixaram-no ir, com o fim de salvar seus irmãos.
26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion, and to the temple of Atargatis, and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons.	26 Depois tornou Judas a ir a Carnion e ao santuário de Atargatis, onde matou vinte e cinco mil homens.
27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them, Judas removed the host toward Ephron, a strong city, wherein Lysias abode, and a great multitude of divers nations, and the strong young men kept the walls, and defended them mightily: wherein also was great provision of engines and darts.	27 Depois da fuga e matança destes inimigos. Judas mandou marchar o seu exército para Efron, cidade forte, em que habitava uma grande multidão de povos diversos. Diante das suas muralhas estavam valentes jovens, que as defendiam vigorosamente, e dentro havia muitas máquinas de guerra e provisão de dardos.
28 But when Judas and his company had called upon Almighty God, who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies, they won the city, and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within,	28 Mas, tendo os Judeus invocado o Todo-Poderoso, que destrói com o seu poder as forças dos inimigos, tomaram a cidade e abateram, dos que estavam dentro, vinte e cinco mil.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem,	29 Dali passaram à cidade dos Citas, que distava de Jerusalém seiscentos estádios.
30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them, and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity;	30 Todavia, como os próprios Judeus, que viviam com os Citopolitanos, tivessem atestado que eram bem tratados e que, nos tempos da desgraça, tinham recebido deles atenções,
31 They gave them thanks, desiring them to be friendly still unto them: and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks approaching.	31 (Judas e os seus) apresentaram-lhes agradecimentos e exortaram-nos a que continuassem a mostrar-se, para o futuro, benignos com os da sua nação. Depois regressaram a Jerusalém, por estar próxima a solenidade das semanas (ou Pentecostes).
32 And after the feast, called Pentecost, they went forth against Gorgias the governor of Idumea,	32 Passado o Pentecostes, marcharam contra Górgias, governador da Idumeia.
33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred horsemen.	33 Górgias foi-o atacar com três mil infantes e quatro centos cavaleiros.
34 And it happened that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain.	34 Tendo vindo às mãos os dois exércitos, foram poucos os Judeus que ficaram mortos.
35 At which time Dositheus, one of Bacenor's company, who was on horseback, and a strong man, was still upon Gorgias, and taking hold of his coat drew him by force; and when he would have taken that cursed man alive, a horseman of Thracia coming upon him smote off his shoulder, so that Gorgias fled unto Marisa.	35 Um certo cavaleiro, porém, do corpo de Bacenor, chamado Dositeu, homem valente, apoderou-se de Górgias, puxando-o pela sua clâmide, pois queria tomar vivo este maldito; todavia um cavaleiro de Trácia arremeteu a ele e cortou-lhe um ombro, 0 que permitiu a Górgias fugir para Maresa.
36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord, that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battle.	36 Entretanto, achando-se fatigados os que estavam com Esdrin, por terem pelejado muito tempo. Judas Invocou o Senhor, para que se fizesse ele mesmo o protector e o chefe neste combate.
37 And with that he began in his own language, and sung psalms with a loud voice, and rushing unawares upon Gorgias' men, he put them to flight.	37 Depois, cantando em alta voz hinos guerreiros na língua pátria, pôs em fuga os soldados de Górgias.
38 So Judas gathered his host, and came into the city of Odollam, And when the seventh day came, they purified themselves, as the custom was, and kept the sabbath in the same place.	38 Seguidamente, juntando Judas o seu exército, partiu para a cidade de Odolão; chegando o dia sétimo, purificados segundo o costume, celebraram o sábado neste mesmo lugar.
39 And upon the day following, as the use had been, Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen in their fathers' graves.	39 No dia seguinte, foi Judas com os seus para levar os corpos dos que tinham sido mortos, para os sepultar com os seus parentes nos sepulcros de seus pais.
40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites, which is forbidden the Jews by the law. Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain.	40 Ora encontraram, debaixo das túnicas dos mortos, objectos consagrados aos ídolos de Jâmaia, que a lei proíbe aos Judeus. Todos reconheceram que fora esta a causa da sua morte.
41 All men therefore praising the Lord, the righteous Judge, who had opened the things that were hid,	41 Todos, por isso, bem-disseram o Senhor, justo juiz, que descobre o que está escondido.
42 Betook themselves unto prayer, and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance. Besides, that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain.	42 Em seguida, postos em oração, suplicaram (ao Senhor) que se esquecesse do pecado cometido. Ao mesmo tempo o fortíssimo Judas exortou o povo a que se conservasse sem pecado, vendo diante de seus olhos as consequências dos pecados daqueles mortos.
43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachms of silver, he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering, doing therein very well and honestly, in that he was mindful of the resurrection:	43 Tendo feito uma colecta, mandou dois mil dracmas de prata a Jerusalém, para se oferecer um sacrifício pelo pecado. Obra bela e santa, inspirada pela crença na ressurreição,
44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again, it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead.	44 porque se ele não esperasse que os mortos haviam de ressuscitar, seria uma coisa supérflua e vã orar pelos defuntos.
45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour laid up for those that died godly, it was an holy and good thought. Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin.	45 Considerava que, aos que falecem na piedade, está reservada uma grandíssima recompensa.
	46 Santo e salutar pensamento este de orar pelos mortos. Eis porque ofereceu um sacrifício expiatório pelos defuntos, para que fossem livres dos seus pecados.
