Premier livre de Samuel 8

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Lorsque Samuel fut devenu vieux, il établit ses fils comme juges en Israël.	1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges of Israel.
2 Son fils aîné s'appelait Yoël et son cadet Abiyya; ils étaient juges à Bersabée.	2 His eldest son was cal ed Joel and his second one, Abijah; they were judges at Beersheba.
3 Mais ses fils ne suivirent pas son exemple: ils furent attirés par le gain, acceptèrent des présents etfirent fléchir le droit.	3 His sons did not fol ow his example but, seduced by the love of money, took bribes and gave biasedverdicts.
4 Tous les anciens d'Israël se réunirent et vinrent trouver Samuel à Rama.	4 The elders of Israel all assembled, went back to Samuel at Ramah, and said,
5 Ils lui dirent: "Tu es devenu vieux et tes fils ne suivent pas ton exemple. Eh bien! établis-nous unroi pour qu'il nous juge, comme toutes les nations."	5 'Look, you are old, and your sons are not fol owing your example. So give us a king to judge us, like theother nations.'
6 Cela déplut à Samuel qu'ils aient dit: "Donne-nous un roi, pour qu'il nous juge", et il invoquaYahvé.	6 Samuel thought that it was wrong of them to say, 'Let us have a king to judge us,' so he prayed toYahweh.
7 Mais Yahvé dit à Samuel: "Satisfais à tout ce que te dit le peuple, car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils ontrejeté, c'est moi qu'ils ont rejeté, ne voulant plus que je règne sur eux.	7 But Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Obey the voice of the people in al that they say to you: it is not you theyhave rejected
8 Tout ce qu'ils m'ont fait depuis le jour où je les ai fait monter d'Egypte jusqu'à maintenant -- ilsm'ont abandonné et ont servi des dieux étrangers -- ils te le font aussi.	8 but me, not wishing me to reign over them any more. They are now doing to you exactly what they havedone to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until now, deserting me and serving other gods.
9 Eh bien, satisfais à leur demande. Seulement, tu les avertiras solennellement et tu leur apprendrasle droit du roi qui va régner sur eux."	9 So, do what they ask; only, you must give them a solemn warning, and must tell them what the kingwho is to reign over them will do.'
10 Samuel répéta toutes les paroles de Yahvé au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.	10 Everything that Yahweh had said, Samuel then repeated to the people who were asking him for aking.
11 Il dit: "Voici le droit du roi qui va régner sur vous. Il prendra vos fils et les affectera à sacharrerie et à ses chevaux et ils courront devant son char.	11 He said, 'This is what the king who is to reign over you wil do. He wil take your sons and direct themto his chariotry and cavalry, and they wil run in front of his chariot.
12 Il les emploiera comme chefs de mille et comme chefs de 50; il leur fera labourer son labour,moissonner sa moisson, fabriquer ses armes de guerre et les harnais de ses chars.	12 He wil use them as leaders of a thousand and leaders of fifty; he wil make them plough his fields andgather in his harvest and make his weapons of war and the gear for his chariots.
13 Il prendra vos filles comme parfumeuses, cuisinières et boulangères.	13 He wil take your daughters as perfumers, cooks and bakers.
14 Il prendra vos champs, vos vignes et vos oliveraies les meilleures et les donnera à ses officiers.	14 He wil take the best of your fields, your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his officials.
15 Sur vos cultures et vos vignes, il prélèvera la dîme et la donnera à ses eunuques et à ses officiers.	15 He wil tithe your crops and vineyards to provide for his courtiers and his officials.
16 Les meilleurs de vos serviteurs, de vos servantes et de vos boeufs, et vos ânes, il les prendra etles fera travailler pour lui.	16 He wil take the best of your servants, men and women, of your oxen and your donkeys, and makethem work for him.
17 Il prélèvera la dîme sur vos troupeaux et vous-mêmes deviendrez ses esclaves.	17 He wil tithe your flocks, and you yourselves wil become his slaves.
18 Ce jour-là, vous pousserez des cris à cause du roi que vous vous serez choisi, mais Yahvé nevous répondra pas, ce jour-là!"	18 When that day comes, you wil cry aloud because of the king you have chosen for yourselves, but onthat day Yahweh wil not hear you.'
19 Le peuple refusa d'écouter Samuel et dit: "Non! Nous aurons un roi	19 The people, however, refused to listen to Samuel. They said, 'No! We are determined to have a king,
20 et nous serons, nous aussi, comme toutes les nations: notre roi nous jugera, il sortira à notre têteet combattra nos combats."	20 so that we can be like the other nations, with our own king to rule us and lead us and fight our battles.'
21 entendit toutes les paroles du peuple et les redit à l'oreille de Yahvé.	21 Samuel listened to al that the people had to say and repeated it in Yahweh's ear.
22 Mais Yahvé lui dit: "Satisfais à leur demande et intronise-leur un roi." Alors Samuel dit auxhommes d'Israël: "Retournez chacun dans sa ville."	22 Yahweh then said to Samuel, 'Do as they ask and give them a king.' Samuel then said to theIsraelites, 'Go home, each of you, to his own town.'
