JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quand ils apprirent cela, tous les rois qui étaient de ce côté du Jourdain, dans la Montagne, dans leBas-Pays et sur toute la côte de la Grande mer vers le Liban, Hittites, Amorites, Cananéens, Perizzites, Hivviteset Jébuséens,	1 Hearing these things, al the kings on this side of the Jordan, in the highlands and in the lowlands, allalong the coast of the Great Sea towards the Lebanon, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites andJebusites, with one consent
2 se coalisèrent pour combattre d'un commun accord Josué et Israël.	2 formed a fighting al iance against Joshua and Israel.
3 Les habitants de Gabaôn apprirent la manière dont Josué avait traité Jéricho et Aï,	3 When the inhabitants of Gibeon learned how Joshua had treated Jericho and Ai, for their part,
4 et eurent, eux aussi, recours à la ruse. Ils allèrent se munir de provisions, et chargèrent leurs ânes devieux sacs et de vieilles outres à vin crevées et recousues.	4 they had recourse to a ruse. They provided themselves with supplies, and loaded their donkeys with oldsacks and with old wineskins which had burst and been sewn up again.
5 Ils avaient à leurs pieds de vieilles sandales rapiécées, et sur eux de vieux habits. Tout le pain qu'ilsemportaient pour leur nourriture était durci et réduit en miettes.	5 They put on patched old sandals and worn-out clothes. The only bread they took with them to eat wasdried up and crumbling.
6 Ils arrivèrent au camp de Gilgal, auprès de Josué, et lui dirent ainsi qu'aux hommes d'Israël: "Nousvenons d'un pays lointain, faites donc alliance avec nous."	6 They came to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and to him and the men of Israel they said, 'We come froma distant country, so make a treaty with us.'
7 Les hommes d'Israël répondirent à ces Hivvites: "Qui sait si vous n'habitez pas au milieu de nous?Alors comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?"	7 The Israelites answered these Hivites, 'For all we know, you may live right among us. How then couldwe make a treaty with you?'
8 Ils répondirent à Josué: "Nous sommes tes serviteurs" -- "Mais qui êtes-vous, leur demanda Josué, etd'où venez-vous?"	8 They said to Joshua, 'We are your servants.' 'But who are you?' Joshua asked them, 'and where do youcome from?'
9 Ils répondirent: "C'est d'un pays très éloigné que viennent tes serviteurs, à cause du renom de Yahvéton Dieu, car nous avons entendu parler de lui, de tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte	9 They said, 'Your servants have come from a country very far away, because of the fame of Yahwehyour God; for we have heard of him and of al that he did in Egypt,
10 et de tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux rois des Amorites qui vivaient au-delà du Jourdain, Sihôn, roi deHeshbôn, et Og, roi du Bashân, qui vivait à Ashtarot.	10 and of al that he did to the two Amorite kings who used to live on the other side of the Jordan: Sihonking of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who used to live at Ashtaroth.
11 Alors nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des provisionspour le voyage, allez au-devant d'eux et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, faites donc alliance avec nous!	11 Because of which, our elders and al the people of our country said to us, "Take provisions with you forthe journey; go and meet them and say to them: We are your servants; so make a treaty with us."
12 Voici notre pain: il était tout chaud quand nous en avons fait provision dans nos maisons, le jour oùnous sommes partis pour aller chez vous, et maintenant le voilà durci et réduit en miettes.	12 Here is our bread; it was warm when we took it from home to provide for our journey the day we setout to come to you, and now, you can see, it is dried up and crumbling.
13 Ces outres à vin que nous avions remplies toutes neuves, les voilà crevées. Nos sandales et nosvêtements, les voilà usés par une très longue marche."	13 These wineskins were new when we filled them; you can see, they have burst; and these clothes andsandals of ours are worn out from travelling such a long way.'
14 Les notables acceptèrent de leurs provisions et ne consultèrent pas l'oracle de Yahvé.	14 The leaders sampled some of the food they offered, but they did not ask Yahweh's orders.
15 Josué leur accorda la paix et fit alliance avec eux pour qu'ils aient la vie sauve, et les notables de lacommunauté leur en firent serment.	15 Joshua made peace with them, and struck a treaty with them guaranteeing their lives, and the leadersof the community ratified it by oath.
16 Or il arriva que, trois jours après qu'ils aient fait alliance, on apprit qu'ils étaient un peuple voisin,vivant au milieu d'Israël.	16 Now it so happened that three days after the treaty had been made, it became known that they were aneighbouring people, living in Israel's region.
17 Les Israélites partirent du camp et arrivèrent dans leurs villes, le troisième jour. Leurs villes étaientGabaôn, Kephira, Béérot et Qiryat-Yéarim.	17 The Israelites set out from camp, arriving in their towns three days later. Their towns were Gibeon,Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-Jearim.
18 Les Israélites ne les attaquèrent pas, puisque les notables de la communauté leur avaient fait sermentpar Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël, mais toute la communauté murmura contre les notables.	18 The Israelites did not attack them, since the leaders of the community had sworn to them by Yahweh,God of Israel, but the whole community muttered against the leaders.
19 Alors tous les notables dirent à toute l'assemblée: "Nous leur avons fait serment par Yahvé, Dieud'Israël, nous ne pouvons donc plus les toucher.	19 The leaders, however, al said to the whole community, 'Since we have sworn an oath to them byYahweh, God of Israel, we cannot touch them now.
20 Voici ce que nous leur ferons: Laisse-leur la vie sauve, pour ne pas attirer sur nous la Colère à causedu serment que nous leur avons fait."	20 This is what we shal do with them: let them live, rather than bring retribution down on ourselves onaccount of the oath which we have sworn to them.'
21 Et les notables leur dirent: "Qu'ils vivent, mais qu'ils soient fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau auservice de toute la communauté." Ainsi leur parlèrent les notables.	21 And the leaders went on, 'Let them live, but let them be wood-cutters and water-carriers for the wholecommunity.' Thus spoke the leaders.
22 Josué convoqua les Gabaonites et leur dit: "Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés en disant: Noussommes très éloignés de vous, quand vous habitez au milieu de nous?	22 Joshua sent for the Gibeonites and asked them, 'Why did you deceive us by saying, "We live very faraway," when in fact you live right among us?
23 Désormais vous êtes maudits et vous ne cesserez jamais d'être en servitude, comme fendeurs de boiset porteurs d'eau dans la Maison de mon Dieu."	23 From now on, you are accursed and wil for ever be serfs, as wood-cutters and water-carriers in thehouse of my God.'
24 Ils répondirent à Josué: "C'est que l'on avait bien dit à tes serviteurs l'ordre donné par Yahvé tonDieu à Moïse, son serviteur, de vous livrer tout ce pays et d'exterminer devant vous tous ses habitants. Aussiavons-nous été saisis à votre approche d'une grande crainte pour nos vies. Voilà pourquoi nous avons agi ainsi.	24 Their answer to Joshua was, 'We did it because your servants had been rightly told that Yahweh yourGod had ordered his servant Moses to give you the whole of this country and destroy al its inhabitants beforeyou; also because, as you advanced on us, we feared very greatly for our lives. That was why we did this.
25 Et maintenant, nous voici entre tes mains, ce qu'il te semble bon et juste de nous faire, fais-le."	25 Now, as you see, we are at your mercy; do to us whatever you think good and right.'
26 Il fit ainsi à leur égard; il les délivra de la main des Israélites qui ne les tuèrent pas.	26 What he did with them was this: he saved them from the hand of the Israelites, who did not kil them.
27 En ce jour-là, Josué les mit comme fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau au service de la communauté etde l'autel de Yahvé, jusqu'aujourd'hui, au lieu qu'il choisirait.	27 But that very day Joshua made them wood-cutters and water-carriers for the community and for thealtar of Yahweh, at the place which he would eventual y choose; and so they are today.
