1 Fixant du regard le Sanhédrin, Paul dit: "Frères, c'est tout à fait en bonne conscience que je me suisconduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour."	1 And Paul looking upon the council, said: Men, brethren, I have conversed with all good conscience before God until this present day.
2 Mais le grand prêtre Ananie ordonna à ses assistants de le frapper sur la bouche.	2 And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
3 Alors Paul lui dit: "C'est Dieu qui te frappera, toi, muraille blanchie! Eh quoi! Tu sièges pour mejuger d'après la Loi, et, au mépris de la Loi, tu ordonnes de me frapper!"	3 Then Paul said to him: God shall strike thee, thou whited wall. For sittest thou to judge me according to the law, and contrary to the law commandest me to be struck?
4 Les assistants lui dirent: "C'est le grand prêtre de Dieu que tu insultes?"	4 And they that stood by said: Dost thou revile the high priest of God?
5 Paul répondit: "Je ne savais pas, frères, que ce fût le grand prêtre. Car il est écrit: Tu ne maudiras pasle chef de ton peuple."	5 And Paul said: I knew not, brethren, that he is the high priest. For it is written: Thou shalt not speak evil of the prince of thy people.
6 Paul savait qu'il y avait là d'un côté le parti des Sadducéens, de l'autre celui des Pharisiens. Il s'écriadonc dans le Sanhédrin: "Frères, je suis, moi, Pharisien, fils de Pharisiens. C'est pour notre espérance, larésurrection des morts, que je suis mis en jugement."	6 And Paul knowing that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, cried out in the council: Men, brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees: concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
7 A peine eut-il dit cela qu'un conflit se produisit entre Pharisiens et Sadducéens, et l'assemblée sedivisa.	7 And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees; and the multitude was divided.
8 Les Sadducéens disent en effet qu'il n'y a ni résurrection, ni ange, ni esprit, tandis que les Pharisiensprofessent l'un et l'autre.	8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
9 Il se fit donc une grande clameur. Quelques scribes du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent et protestèrenténergiquement: "Nous ne trouvons rien de mal en cet homme. Et si un esprit lui avait parlé? Ou un ange?"	9 And there arose a great cry. And some of the Pharisees rising up, strove, saying: We find no evil in this man. What if a spirit hath spoken to him, or an angel?
10 La dispute devenait de plus en plus vive. Le tribun, craignant qu'ils ne missent Paul en pièces, fitdescendre la troupe pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le ramener à la forteresse.	10 And when there arose a great dissension, the tribune fearing lest Paul should be pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
11 La nuit suivante, le Seigneur vint le trouver et lui dit: "Courage! De même que tu as rendutémoignage de moi à Jérusalem, ainsi faut-il encore que tu témoignes à Rome."	11 And the night following the Lord standing by him, said: Be constant; for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
12 Lorsqu'il fit jour, les Juifs tinrent un conciliabule, où ils s'engagèrent par anathème à ne pas mangerni boire avant d'avoir tué Paul.	12 And when day was come, some of the Jews gathered together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying, that they would neither eat, nor drink, till they killed Paul.
13 Ils étaient plus de 40 à avoir fait cette conjuration.	13 And they were more than forty men that had made this conspiracy.
14 Ils allèrent trouver les grands prêtres et les anciens, et leur dirent: "Nous nous sommes engagés paranathème à ne rien prendre avant d'avoir tué Paul.	14 Who came to the chief priests and the ancients, and said: We have bound ourselves under a great curse that we will eat nothing till we have slain Paul.
15 Vous donc maintenant, d'accord avec le Sanhédrin, expliquez au tribun qu'il doit vous l'amener,sous prétexte d'examiner plus à fond son affaire. De notre côté, nous sommes prêts à le tuer avant qu'il n'arrive."	15 Now therefore do you with the council signify to the tribune, that he bring him forth to you, as if you meant to know something more certain touching him. And we, before he come near, are ready to kill him.
16 Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul eut connaissance du guet-apens. Il se rendit à la forteresse, entra etprévint Paul.	16 Which when Paul's sister's son had heard, of their lying in wait, he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.
17 Appelant un des centurions, Paul lui dit: "Conduis ce jeune homme au tribun; il a quelque chose àlui communiquer."	17 And Paul, calling to him one of the centurions, said: Bring this young man to the tribune, for he hath some thing to tell him.
18 Le centurion le prit donc et l'amena au tribun. "Le prisonnier Paul, dit-il, m'a appelé et m'a prié det'amener ce jeune homme, qui a quelque chose à te dire."	18 And he taking him, brought him to the tribune, and said: Paul, the prisoner, desired me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath some thing to say to thee.
19 Le tribun prit le jeune homme par la main, se retira à l'écart et lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu à mecommuniquer?" -	19 And the tribune taking him by the hand, went aside with him privately, and asked him: What is it that thou hast to tell me?
20 "Les Juifs, répondit-il, se sont concertés pour te prier d'amener Paul demain au Sanhédrin, sousprétexte d'enquêter plus à fond sur son cas.	20 And he said: The Jews have agreed to desire thee, that thou wouldst bring forth Paul to morrow into the council, as if they meant to inquire some thing more certain touching him.
21 Ne va pas les croire. Plus de 40 d'entre eux le guettent, qui se sont engagés par anathème à ne pasmanger ni boire avant de l'avoir tué. Et maintenant, ils sont tout prêts, escomptant ton accord."	21 But do not thou give credit to them; for there lie in wait for him more than forty men of them, who have bound themselves by oath neither to eat, nor to drink, till they have killed him: and they are now ready, looking for a promise from thee.
22 Le tribun congédia le jeune homme avec cette recommandation: "Ne raconte à personne que tu m'asrévélé ces choses."	22 The tribune therefore dismissed the young man, charging him that he should tell no man, that he had made known these things unto him.
23 Puis il appela deux des centurions et leur dit: "Tenez prêts à partir pour Césarée, dès la troisièmeheure de la nuit, 200 soldats, 70 cavaliers et 200 hommes d'armes.	23 Then having called two centurions, he said to them: Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen for the third hour of the night:
24 Qu'on ait aussi des chevaux pour faire monter Paul et le conduire sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix."	24 And provide beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe to Felix the governor.
25 Et il écrivit une lettre ainsi conçue:	25 (For he feared lest perhaps the Jews might take him away by force and kill him, and he should afterwards be slandered, as if he was to take money.) And he wrote a letter after this manner:
26 "Claudius Lysias au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut!	26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor, Felix, greeting.
27 L'homme que voici avait été pris par les Juifs, et ils allaient le tuer, quand j'arrivai avec la troupe etle leur arrachai, ayant appris qu'il était citoyen romain.	27 This man being taken by the Jews, and ready to be killed by them, I rescued coming in with an army, understanding that he is a Roman:
28 J'ai voulu savoir au juste pourquoi ils l'accusaient et je l'ai amené dans leur Sanhédrin.	28 And meaning to know the cause which they objected unto him, I brought him forth into their council.
29 J'ai constaté que l'accusation se rapportait à des points contestés de leur Loi, mais qu'il n'y avaitaucune charge qui entraînât la mort ou les chaînes.	29 Whom I found to be accused concerning questions of their law; but having nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bands.
30 Avisé qu'un complot se préparait contre cet homme, je te l'ai aussitôt envoyé, et j'ai informé sesaccusateurs qu'ils avaient à porter devant toi leur plainte contre lui."	30 And when I was told of ambushes that they had prepared for him, I sent him to thee, signifying also to his accusers to plead before thee. Farewell.
31 Conformément aux ordres reçus, les soldats prirent Paul et le conduisirent de nuit à Antipatris.	31 Then the soldiers, according as it was commanded them, taking Paul, brought him by night to Antipatris.
32 Le lendemain, ils laissèrent les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui et rentrèrent à la forteresse.	32 And the next day, leaving the horsemen to go with him, they returned to the castle.
33 Arrivés à Césarée, les cavaliers remirent la lettre au gouverneur et lui présentèrent Paul.	33 Who, when they were come to Caesarea, and had delivered the letter to the governor, did also present Paul before him.
34 Après avoir lu la lettre, le gouverneur s'informa de quelle province il était. Apprenant qu'il était deCilicie:	34 And when he had read it, and had asked of what province he was, and understood that he was of Cilicia;
35 "Je t'entendrai, dit-il, quand tes accusateurs seront arrivés, eux aussi." Et il le fit garder dans leprétoire d'Hérode.	35 I will hear thee, said he, when thy accusers come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
